Youāre not depressed. You just need $250,000 in your bank account.
Your 30s aren't too late. Don't let nobody tell you that stupid shit.
Your 40s aren't too late. Don't let nobody tell you that stupid shit.
#as long as you're alive it's literally never too late
Well, its been literally years, maybe I'll actually explain that sometime, but fuck it. I'm back from the dead motherfuckers! No idea why i logged back in. Maybe nostalgia. Eh, whatever. I might post things again, if I manage to get my head out of my own ass for 5 minutes.
Transformative Justice 101
Iāve been getting some questions about transformative justice lately, so hereās an attempt at a quick 101 of what that means. Itās a first draft, a work in progress.
Transformative justice is build on the belief that we all generally want to be liked by the people around us and want those people to be okay. The stronger our sense of connection, the more likely we are to want to help and not harm people. So we generally do not do harmful actions unless there are root causes, like:
Some examples of root causes:
We do not understand that our actions are harmful
Our basic needs are not being met (could be physical needs, mentalĀ health needs, etc)
We are hurting in a way that isnt acknowledged and are lashing out as a result
We reproduce a harmful oppressive system (sexist violence, racist violence, transphobic violence, etc)
⦠other root causes that Iāve forgotten right now
Punishment does not solve any of these causes. Punishment can make us too afraid to act for a while, but in the end, if these reasons are not adressed, our harmful behavior is going to keep coming back.
But just as importantly: because punishment is forced upon the punished, it can only happen when the punisher has more power than the punished. Punishment is a matter of who has the power to punish, not of who is right or who is deserving of punishment. Generally, punishment doesnāt happen to the bad people, just to those without the power to avoid being punished. Punishment maintains existing power imbalances and creates new power-imbalances, new harm, new wounds, and as a result new harmful behaviors. Punishment perpetuates harm.
So, what is the alternative?
Well, transformative justice relies on 3 things:
Protecting the victim and giving them space to heal (sidenote: there isnāt always a simple victim-actor binary)
Protecting the community and giving it space to heal
Working with the harmful actor to see what is needed
Focussing on the last two parts here, transformative justice means having genuine honest conversations with the harmful actor to achieve for example:
The realisation in the actor that the behavior is harmful and needs to change
The realisation in the community that someoneās basic needs were not being met and that needs to change
The realisation in the community that someoneās hurt was not acknowledged and that needs to change
The unlearning in the actor of the oppressive behaviors that prompted the harmful behavior
The realisation in the community that there was no real harm and that the behavior that broke the ārulesā was never harmful to begin with andĀ the ārulesā need to change
A combination of these things
In short, if there is harmful behavior, it means something about the way we have organized our society probably needs changing. Often other things that can not directly be identified asĀ āroot causes of harmful behaviorā come up, likeĀ āa person that was lashing out was able to recruit a group of friends in their harmful behaviorā and those things then need to be adressed. Transformative justice isnāt just about the actor, it is about the whole community.
Where there is harm, there is also disconnection. Pain, anger, broken trust. So identification of the root causes is followed by transformation. Meaning the root causes of the harmful behavior are removed and the connection between actor and community is restored. Ā Ā
The goal of transformative justice is NOT that the harmful actor puts on a show of the right apologies and demonstrations of change. Itās not a performance of accountability. Transformative justice is about creating actual, messy, slow, imperfect change. Remorse is not a required component. The goal isnāt a specific emotion or act, itās reaching a situation where no new harm will occur and connections are restored.
Itās hard work, for the harmful actor and for the community. It is generally not fun. When it is done by a group of people who have grown up in a culture of revenge and punishment, itās very very difficult work. Since we weāre already making lists, here are some..
Common pitfalls:
We donāt always have the resources to address the needs that are not being met, whether they are physical needs or mental health needs.
We donāt always have the skills needed to really listen to each other, to find root causes behind harm, to work on genuine healing, etc. Weāre quick to fall into familiar patterns of punishment & revenge or demanding ingenuine performed apologies so that we can have simplicity and closure.
Transformations are often slow and unclear, creating a long period of uncertainty. There is no clear sense of when itās over or whether a harmful actor is putting enough effort into ādealing with their shitā. If someone is lashing out as a result of a lifetime of abuse or a deeply engrained oppressive dogma, theyāre not likely to become perfect in a short time. Protecting victims and the community during that long period is difficult. Transformative justice can be emotionally draining on everyone involved over a long period of time. It is difficult to maintain. It doesnāt have big spectacular success stories and very little recognition.
Working with the harmful actor to achieve transformation means listening to someone who has done harm and genuinely trying to understand their point of view. This can bring a lot of discomfort and is something a lot of us who say we want transformative justice are ultimately unwilling to do. Transformation of an actor also results in a real reconnection of bonds between the actor and the community once the transformation has taken place. Are we willing to do that?
Participation of the victim should always be voluntary. A person healing from a very harmful thing definitely shouldnāt be pushed to participate. At the same time, some victims might really want to participate in the transformative justice process but may be unwilling or unable to deal with the messy process of genuine conversations with an actor and the flawed process of transformation it involves. Giving victims agency but also allowing the actors transformative process to take place is difficult.
Weāre not very good at recognizing the difference between mutual harm and victim-actor binaries. We often end up dealing badly with cases where that is unclear. When the actor has a marginalized identity that the victim does not have, weāre often very bad at recognizing actor and victim.
Weāre often unwilling to admit the role favoritism, personal bonds and popularity plays in how we respond to the need for a transformative justice process. A person who is well liked may get a lot more support in their transformation that a person who is not. The amount of energy weāre willing to spend on someone varies.
The community may be unwilling to change parts of its culture that are consistently creating new harmful actors. For example: an community that glorifies physical strength, fighting skills and a warrior attitude is going to have to problems with that again and again. A community that focusses on performative call-outs as a way of demonstrating your ideological purity is going to be very bad at genuine transformation.
And there are more pitfalls.. so yeah, itās complicated. Itās a lot more complicated that kicking people out or building prisons.
But while punishment is ineffective and thus required again and again and again, transformative justice creates lasting change. And because it doesnāt just change the actor, every transformative justice process also creates a better community that is better capable of preventing harm in the first place.
To round up
Transformative justice is as old as human community itself and there are many different transformative justice techniques out there. Some rely on an outside āimpartialā negotiator, others are victim-led, some require that the actor in some way repairs the damage done while other methods reject this notion.Ā But in general transformative justice is about:
Safety, healing, and agency for victims
Transformation for people who did harm, resulting in meaningful reconnection to the community
Community transformation and healing
Transformation of the social conditions that perpetuate harm
And it fucking rocks.

I am so fucking gay
There is something so breathtakingly beautiful about wildflowers. So spontaneous. So unplanned. So unstructured. Just a subtle, raw purity that grows with the rising and setting of the sun.

The union busting firms are scared
As a fine dining cook, I found work in a union workplace around a year ago. My 40 hours a week are guaranteed except for Jan/feb/mar when thereās not enough customers, I get paid almost twice what I did at any other restaurant, if I work overtime, (more than 8 hours in one day, or more than 40 in a week), I actually get overtime pay, (and itās 1.5x my normal rate!). I get holiday pay, and in addition I get to either bank or pay out my holidays if I work those days, (either a paid day off when I want it, in addition to the holiday pay, or I get paid an addāl 8 hours at 1.5x that week). I also get two floating holidays, 4 paid random sick days, 2 paid family sick days, and 4 paid ādoctorās noteā sick days, (paid out by our health insurance), as well as general allowance to take as many unpaid sick days as I want without worrying for my job security. (Iāve been told that taking multiple months off is where we start to be concerned about abuse, so if I want to do that, I can go through our leave of absence procedures instead, where Iām allowed three 2-week periods a year generally for whatever reason I want, (If my manager wants to disagree, he has to get the union presidentās approval), and after that itās up to my manager to decide if heāll accept them). I get two weeks of paid vacation time a year, and an addāl week per year for every 5 years I work there. We get our legally mandated breaks, which, I know that sounds like a low bar, but taking anything other than a smoke break in a kitchen?!?! Unheard of! I get two 15ā²s and a lunch every shift! I get to sitdown and rest my legs and not get flak for it! I get a bonus at the end of the year, thereās official procedures for if my manager isnāt happy with me or wants to get rid of me, (three meetings, during which my union representative has to be present), (and getting rid of my classification doesnāt work, thereās rules for how someone ābumpsā other people if classifications are gotten rid of), and severance pay for when full-time employees that are downsized out of the company, thereās a pension plan, like . . . Guys, I have a 40-page handbook which details all of the rights my union has won me, and believe me, Iāve never had any of these at any prior workplace. And you know what my union dues are? $4 a paycheck. Of course Iām going to pay my union dues for all of those benefits.
Reblogging for this incredibly thorough explanation of what it's like to actually have a contract in place at a union workplace. I reblog a fair number of posts about how people should organize, but if you're like me, you might not know exactly what that can get you until you've actually gone through the process. Every contract is different because you bargain for what makes sense for your particular workplace, and every few years you re-negotiate with the employer to improve things in the next contract, but some things (like the right to have union representation when you talk to your boss about leave or discipline) are universal.
It's worth every penny of your dues, I promise.

this is really important so iām posting it here because itāll probably get removed and the original poster may be banned, but this is literal documentation and proof that terfs and transphobes are directly connected to the far-right and have roots in racism, homophobia, misogyny, and antisemitism. it really is all part of the same oppressive system, so there is no disconnecting transphobia from conservatism. there is no such thing as a progressive transphobe as much as they may want you to believe. it has nothing to do with biology or protecting women or children, none of it is founded in science or logic, it is purely hatred and and attempt to justify bigotry.
[Transcription:
I got radicalized into the far-right on TikTok.Ā Well, technically I didnāt, but an account that I made did, and this is a graph of what that looked like.Ā I just published this study, and Iāll link it in the comments, but Iāll also break it down right now, here.
So I wanted to examine whether or not transphobia is a gateway prejudice that leads to like, broader far-right radicalization.Ā Itās been pretty clear for a while now that the far-right is transphobic, but we wanted to see whether being transphobic alone was enough to lead you to the far right.
So I made a brand new TikTok account and followed 14 creators known to post transphobic content.Ā Then I started scrolling my āFor Youā page, and I started exclusively engaging with transphobic content, and I documented the main narratives of the more than 400 videos recommended to me.Ā We also double-blind coded this, meaning that another researcher also watched every video and coded the narratives, and then if we ever disagreed, more researchers would come in and perform a tie-breaker.Ā Once we removed sponsored videos and videos that had been taken down before they could be double-coded, we were left with 360 videos.
Of the 360 total videos, 103 were homophobic or anti-trans, 42 were misogynistic, 29 contained racist narratives or white supremacist messaging, and 14 endorsed violence.Ā Obviously, TikTok didnāt just like give us neo-nazi content immediately.Ā I actually didnāt get my first Nazi symbol until video 141.Ā But the more I interacted with transphobic content, the more I was fed not only more transphobic content, but also homophobia and misogyny and racism and antisemitism.Ā So I didnāt actually have to interact with racist content to be fed white supremacist content, I just had to engage with transphobic content.
What you see in this graph is the TikTok algorithm starting off with a normal feed ā memes, recipes, whatever ā and then going āOHH, youāre transphobic!Ā Have you tried hating the gays?Ā What about women?ā
So, it appears that transphobia can radicalize a TikTokker.
Around video 400, youāll notice an interesting spike in far-right figures, hate symbols, antisemitism and calls to violence.Ā Thatās when I reached fascist TikTok and set my phone on fire.Ā 400 videos might sound like a lot, but if a user watches each video for an average of 20 seconds, they would end up watching 400 videos in just over 2 hours.Ā So, a user could basically download the app at breakfast and be fed the overtly white supremacist, neo-nazi content before lunch.
-pauses, purses lips-
Thatās not good!

the way people talk about type 2 diabetes, and specifically the way people talk about people who have type 2 diabetes...is pretty fucked
having diabetes is not a moral failure
Hey op you're so right gd you're so right like tw: ed but I have diabetes on both sides of my family (literally both of my parents are diabetic) making me more prone to blood sugar spikes and stuff and I was at the doctor last year and they found out I was insulin resistant and pre diabetic and told me I desperately needed to lose weight. That was the end of their advice: lose weight or you will become diabetic and die.
Anyway I lost fifty pounds in a year from relapsing in my ED and my blood sugar never stopped spiking and my insulin resistance never got better and I went to residential treatment and was like "no no I need to lose weight I need to lose weight or I'll die" n they were like "why?" And I was like "I'm prediabetic and insulin resistant" and they told me
All I had to do was make sure I balanced sugary foods with protein.
I got out of treatment in april and have been having a handful of nuts with sweets and I had my A1C taken today and I'm no longer pre diabetic
The way doctors see type 2 diabetes and high weights as moral failings for which weight loss is the redemption is fucking insane. I wrote on my intake work I had a history of ED and she still didn't hesitate to tell me to lose weight instead of telling me how to balance my macronutrients so that my blood sugar no longer spiked.
