luca tarantini in evelyn raab’s cookbook Clueless in the Kitchen: Cooking for Beginners (2017), including on the front cover . all pictures are from current online listings of the book or the archive.org digitised version i didnt buy the book just to look at luca pictures dont worry . that said its a good cookbook i do recommend it
(how did i find these? stumbled across a news article talking about the book, went “huh cool i wonder what its like!”, looked it up, saw the front cover and went “am i insane or is that luca tarantini” and the rest is history)
alt versions of some of these pictures that i screenshotted from the archive.org scan below the cut bc the qualitys not great for some of the ones from online
why does everything he says hit me in a sore spot
thinking about what he said in the pete holmes interview about how important it is to him to connect his stories to old mythology and then how pete goes “it makes you feel at home on the planet” and matt goes “RIGHT! exactly.”

i do think that matt probably had some kind of complex about nirvana the band vs his ambitions back in the day. like even to this day he makes it clear that he thinks ntb is kind of dumb and unserious. at times he’s even called it meaningless. obviously this is not true to him, to him it’s the most meaningful thing in the world, but i think when he looks at it from an outsider’s perspective he sees it as stupid compared to “serious” art. and i think he has always wanted to be taken seriously and especially when he was younger wanted to do something that would really prove himself to be a serious person, to make all his craziness worth it by making an objectively good movie. and so i just wonder if that’s why he started to have problems with jay, and why they disagreed so strongly on whether they were ever gonna do more nirvanna the band. i feel like matt probably wanted to move into the serious era of his career at that point and maybe felt like he couldn’t do that with ntb, especially after the failed pilot. and jay didn’t go to film school and the characters matt & jay could play were always inevitably going to be these stupid guys and anyway jay could do anything he wanted in the world of music, and he was attractive and people always liked him, so he didn’t have to be as crazy as matt. he didn’t have to prove himself like matt did. meanwhile matt had already failed at his original ambition in life (magic cards) and now had to make sure he didn’t fuck up his only other shot at significance (filmmaking). and matt who cares so much about whether people have good taste and whether his friends like the same things he likes and whether artists have integrity told jay on camera “everything you think is funny is stupid.” matt who apparently for years believed that if jay ever got famous he would never speak to matt again. matt who joked that he was so successful after the dirties he deleted jay from his phone but jay came crawling back. matt who clearly thinks jay doesn’t need him, who makes an entire show about this insecurity. and then you have jay insisting he’ll be in every matt project coming up, telling matt he would’ve shot a life-threatening scene with him when no one else would. jay at matt’s side every day making blackberry, the movie that arguably legitimized matt in the eyes of the world. matt crying uncontrollably when he edits the ntb movie to end with a confirmation that he and jay have indeed succeeded in making their ambitions their life. their shared life. like i just

matt on the criminally underrated podcast and exit we lyrics
something terrible is happening to me in regards to the movie opav
Matt Johnson: Making the movie, I mean, you and I, I got you a job at the Science Center. And we were, it's really true, because we did spend a lot of time with one another very quickly, and that was such a sinecure position I had. I basically did nothing, and I was like, okay, come work here with me, and we'll spend as much time together as we possibly can. And was it a month? How long? Because I quit, right? We both quit to make this movie, but how long was it between...
Owen Williams: Yeah I- I don't know. It felt like a while for me because at the Science Centre, Matt had a lot of little tricks at the Science Centre about how to have a good time there. The Science Centre is now closed forever, so some of these tricks could be talked about more openly, but it still don't mean to be totally, but just like little ways to do like little time theft. And they made me very, very nervous. Any little thing, you can get out like 10 minutes early if you just do this little thing.
MJ: I forgot about this!
OW: I was so, so, so extremely nervous about any little caper. And Matt was like, this is good, this is training-
Peter Kuplowsky: I mean meanwhile, yeah, you're just auditioning him for the movie.
MJ: He'd already got the job, but at this point I didn't realize that he was getting so much out of it. It's funny to think back, I did have a lot of schemes. I had become good friends with the security guard there who was like, there was something about I couldn't get in a room at some point, and he was like, "Oh man, I'll just get you my skeleton key." And I was like, "Really?" And so he gives me this, and he's like "Just bring it back at some point." Three years later Owen is working there and I'm like, "Where do you wanna go? We'll go in any goddamn room, this is the room I sleep in, here's where I edit Nirvanna the Band the Show." Literally, I had my whole editing setup in one of the classrooms there- I mean, I guess this is despicable, but in a very real way that job created not only the Dirties but Nirvanna the Band the Show. Because only because I had that job that I could afford to live and because, again, I didn't have to do anything there. I was a tour guide. So I would just edit the show all day.
