i found this podcast from 2017 that matt and jay were on but for anyone who doesn't have the time to listen i took notes and there's a ton of really, REALLY good moments throughout:
starts out by matt complementing american radio hosts and how they improvise live, jay says it reminds him of wayne's world.
"we would just perform he and i at his parents house for nobody" - matt
both of their parents had pianos at the houses, jay calls them playdates, "you'd come over to my house and then stay for dinner". matt goes “its the adults who lose that (having playdates/having fun with friends) that are really sad like 'oh im just staying home with my girlfriend'…”
"it’s freedom" matt on living together watching each other play video games, drafting, and they’d do it for hours. jay would play GTA and he'd watch and matt would play cards while jay'd watch.
matt leaks the premise of hackers ep of s2 and jay goes you need to stop giving stuff away! and "that’s all we’re saying"
(at around 36:00) jay: “we were at the very end of our relationship, we took a full year off from each other we didn’t even speak. matt made his movie (the dirties) and we started talking again about getting something cooking...” then talks about how they had shitty opportunities before, terrible experiences w the Canadian industry and bureaucracy with getting the show going again
jay said at the time he was wondering if it would be bad luck/a faux pas to bring the show back. matt goes "were we saying that?" jay says "no i was saying that to you, i was saying i wanna get this going again. we were hanging out again, we were joking, we were back to our old groove”
matt: “i had really struck success and jay was right at the doorstep” host: “he was looking to jump on the coattails?” matt: “dude it was–we won Slamdance and i had deleted him from my phone...” jay: “i was hangin out with martin short” matt: “oh good for you, where’s martin now?” jay: “he’s kinda a has-been i guess” matt: “*interupting* wheres martin now” *laughter*
matt: "but basically what happened was, jay and i feel like we were put on earth to make that stupid show, literally i can make that show better than i can do anything else, like i know it, i’ll never be able to make anything better…”
matt talks abt how dirties/opav enabled them to do anything they wanted, which was returning back to the show, vice was coming in because they wanted Canadian creators for original content with young people based in toronto, it was their self described Shangri-la
matt talks abt vice opening the window for young people, vice talking to a lot of young talent, but then also says “we could say a lot of bad stuff” ... "nobodies job is on the line, we're playing with house money." (crazyyy foreshadowing here)
talks about filming in Canada’s wonderland and they were illegally there, kept getting thrown out, and how one of the two cameras was constantly getting taken away/arrested while mid-shooting a scene
“the cliche becomes new” (of all the stupid shit they get up to) because they’re doing it with real people
matt: "most of the genesis of what nirvana the band is was created when jay and i were 17"
jay says the more we tell this story the more of it comes back to him.
"i remember us in jumbo video going around looking at VHS, having a laughing fit, and you were making me laugh and going 'they want a show at the rivoli and they call themselves a band name that's obviously already taken, like Nirvana' and we laugh 'and just so there's no confusion they call themselves nirvana the band.' and we were just sort of on this roll and just in an instant of a joke we were tickled by... this is how nirvanna the band works as a partnership between matt and i: when it’s a laugh, and a look we share, where that is it, everybody else be damned. because we just decided. because it’s the funniest/killer joke. just for for us.”
a lot of ntb webseries was written at little india, jay says to get there earlier to get the little doll, the host says the shrimp curry is his fav, matt is about to say something and then goes "oh jay cant eat shrimp" (ok #marriedcouple its whatever)
they spent a lot of time at sneaky dees in the old days, matt recently went there and lost his credit card
matt: "we go to rose and sons, but now we’re really busy, we would go out all the time when we were making the webseries *lists local clubs/venues* because we were young and were gonna live forever, all we did was make the show and go out... we went to crazy places, Shanghai cowgirl, tequila bookworm...”
jay: “i wanna check out that new pinball place” matt: “we’re getting into a good topic” jay: “heree we goooo" (you can hear the endeared eye roll)
jay starts talking about how they had the time of their lives and wasted $70 at this nyc pinball speakeasy called spincycle. they continue geeking out about pinballs and then also how they saw some drunk guy who thought they were laughing at them and started freaking out after they were leaving set one night
talks about the goldeneye speedrunnning tournament they did for the show at a&c games. host asks if jay he does well, are you a good goldeneye player?
jay: "absolutely i am." matt: "he’s amazing."
matt and jay saw ep 7 of star wars together 3 times and were heartbroken on their first watch. matt says "i don’t think it’s terrible, i had fun watching it... cites one specific complaint as how instead of trying to obscure the reveal of kylo being han solo's son they just reveal it early on when they had the blueprint for a reveal already in the original movies.
jay didn't like the “campiness” (????) between finn and poe (LMFAO) and refers to oscar isaac as llewyn davis. explains that him shouting all these campy lines threw him off (jay: "like where does this stormtrooper get this sense of humor?? what does he do on his weekends?" matt chimes in and agrees).
they did see rogue one together since the host brings it up and says it was his fav. matt's favorite is a new hope. jays says that even when he tries describing the ending sometimes he get teary eyed. the host says he doesn't like it–too much luke and matt agrees (this part is ridiculously funny because matt goes on to call luke a pussy and says he cries a lot, and that he's not a great actor and he's weird and that everyone knows it... fnsjkankf insert jay's "sounds like someone i know")
jay says there’s also another koji (name of host), koji condo, composer of nintendo who recently died. matt talks about how all these guys who created video game music all wrote their music w midi tools in the 90s and how now composers can do whatever they want it's so easy. jay starts composer nerding out a lil bit. so does matt about how koji's themes were resonant to each game level
there's a moment where they're almost all about to start humming a tune but then the host just asks another question
matt says "you can probably trade our webseries dvd for 8 tall cans"
and then it ends with them talking about how bad the star wars holiday special was.
