privilege usually does a specific thing: makes you more ignorant on the axis you're privileged in. you're unaware of the stuggle of the disprivileged group of the same axis, and since this bigotry is something we absorb since early childhood from everywhere and every space and media: you are more likely to also be bigoted about it, it's not a literal guarantee but since your life doesn't depend on it and you won't get aoe blown up by association for standing for, yu're more likely to stand against.

sometimes even when you stand for those who are disprivileged, you can accidentally make a bigoted joke or say something bigoted. this might NOT be a BIG deal for you because it's not something that affects you, not because you're evil, it's not having full understanding of how deeply ingrained it is.

sometimes when you're told what you did was bigoted, you default to thinking you're being accused of being evil. you are not evil, you are privileged.

sometimes when you're told you have relative privilege, you default to thinking you're accused of not being oppressed at ALL. that is unso. being white doesn't absolve you being a lesbian, for example, but a white lesbian can be really violently racist, there's examples!

sometime when you're told you have relative privilege, you think you're being told you have your life good. it's not that. your life might suck because of something you're oppressed for. it just as a rule doesn't suck even MORE because of some privileges you have.

(also no, you can't compare white transfems to transmascs of color, it doesn't work like that, you would compare transfems of color with transmascs of color, etc.)

It’s not like Tim has actually done anything explicitly wrong in canon, aside from some racism that was the fault of horrible writers, and not in character. Having a whole blog dedicated to drawing him getting murdered in various ways is.. seriously disgusting. If it was about Jason Todd, people would freak out. But it’s totally fine because….. Why? Why is this normal to us?

sometimes it is genuinely sobering to be confronted with how little the average transmasc knows or thinks about the transmisogyny present in scociety and especially in systems that have power over us.

I don't say this to dunk on or insult my transmasc friend, he's a genuiniely wonderful person, I'm just baffled by the ignorance at play here.

he describes himself as an actuvist for trans rights. he didn't know about v-coding, or about trans women being denied access to domestic and sexual abuse help services for women, he didn't know how fucking bad the state of femenizing healthcare is because like many others, he heard "testosterone is a controlled substance and estrogen isn't" and concluded from that that getting on E must be easier, no further research needed.

but the most important part? when I pointed this out to him, he admitted his bias and promised to do better. he recognized how he had been ignorant of transfem's specific struggles because of his own marginalized status and reaffirmed his support.

I am so used to being met with hostility when discussing transmisogyny that this(the bare fucking minimum) was a genuine positive surprise to me in the moment.

No he wasn't. Nobody does that. He was written to be likeable and people still didn't like him. Sucks but it happens sometimes. Cope.

I wasn't saying this as a Jason Todd stan. I just think there are a lot of nuances with Jason Todd that the following robins don't really have. ( and it's very interesting to me, the difference in characters when an author likes writing the character vs when they don't )

Jason being seen as the replacement Robin had a lot to do with things, nobody likes to see their favorite character replaced, especially Dick Grayson who had been Robin for over 40 years at that point. Dick had many stories outside of Batman as Robin, a chance Jason didn't get but other Robins following him do get. Wolfman also stated that Jason Todd was literally created so Dick Grayson could be his own person.

Collins made Jason a street kid because and I quote, "I believe the street kid thing was my idea, the notion being that Batman/Bruce Wayne did not want responsibility for putting Dick Grayson in harm’s way anymore, but this new street kid was already in harm’s way and heading toward the wrong road. So taking him on (and it was a gradual decision) made sense."

Collins ends up quitting, In came Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Alan Grant, and John Wagner, it is stated that none of them were enthusiastic about writing for Jason's Robin.

Jim Starlin specifically, was a writer for Batman in the 80s, and with him came his hate of child sidekick. He stated multiple times that he avoided using Robin (Jason Todd) in his stories as much as he could. His one story with Robin was issue #424. Where about this he states that, "In the one Batman issue I wrote with Robin featured, I had him do something underhanded, as I recall. Denny had told me that the character was very unpopular with fans, so I decided to play on that dislike." ( Aka he was written to be disliked and this wasn't the only time either ) They actively played into the dislike for his Robin instead of trying to write stories that might make fans like him more. Which is very different than how it went with Tim, in the interview with his writer he states how much he worked on making Tim likable.

( I don't mention other Robins because after Tim the idea of Bruce taking in another Robin wasn't ground breaking anymore. )

O'neil then did say that he should've been more hands on, because suddenly they had this character who was a "disagreeable little snot" and knew they either needed to give him character development or write him out. At the same time, Dc was having an idea of doing an AIDS education book, so they put a box out and had everybody put in the name of a character they think should die via AIDS. About this Jim Starlin says, " they put a box out and wanted everybody to put in suggestions of who should contract AIDS and perish in the comics. I stuffed it with Robin. They realized it was all my handwriting so they ended up throwing all my things out" which is such an insane thing to say about a child character you're writing for. Then after this came the vote to kill off Jason.

The two-faced exploitation and abuse of the Greek people at full display, in all its glory. The ideology is polar opposite - the exploitation is the same. This is what we are exposed to, constantly (it’s always very common but is becoming epidemic with Nolan’s movie) and if we attempt to offer input, we will usually be shunned out of it with the obligatory laugh emojis and mocking comments, in a predictable manner we know all too well.

The scariest thing here is the number of likes in the second comment. But make no mistake, even if it initially seems less problematic, the first comment is not less evil. Read it very carefully and you will understand. It’s no surprise it comes from a Turk.
