Hey if June is both Pride month and men's mental health month, perhaps we should talk about the mental health of queer men? I feel like we kind of don't do that enough. Let's talk about transmisandry. Let's talk about the way so many queer spaces are anti-masculinity. Let's talk about how the patriarchy tells us that masculine = good and feminine = bad, but that does NOT mean that we should switch to saying that feminine = good and masculine = bad! Let's keep talking about the good old-fashioned toxic masculinity that makes gay men afraid to come out. Let's keep talking about internalized homophobia. And we should talk about queer women and their mental health as well! Misogyny and transmisogyny and lesbophobia, etc., are all problems! But I feel like there's a tendency in queer spaces to think of masculinity as inherently toxic and dangerous. Just because toxic masculinity is a problem does not mean that all masculinity is toxic! Let's talk about positive and uplifting masculinity. Let's help young trans men dismantle their internalized transandrophobia and find positive masculinity within themselves! Let's stop treating nonbinary people who were AMAB as scary males when they're not!! Let's stop treating males as scary!! Let's stop assuming that every man is a predator, so that we do not teach men that they are expected to be predators! Let's talk about the mental health of queer men!
