i feel like people are overlooking the moment at the beginning of obsession where nikki straight up asks "do you like me?" and once bear lies and says no she replies "ok, good." for starters, it was a chilling moment to me because this is such a classic experience of having a close guy friend, only to realize that he wants more from you. girls aren't dumb! nikki isn't dumb! of course she knows that bear is into her, she has eyes! she can see his stuttering and sheepishness and she's just dreading the moment she has to turn him down, to tell him that he's like a brother to her. just before she had told him that she doesn't feel real love in her life, and i don't think it would be a leap to attribute a small part of that feeling to her fear that her friendship with bear isn't as simple as she wants it to be.
it's also a chilling question from nikki because once she walks away bear knows that she doesn't feel the same way about him, and he makes the wish anyway. he is incapable or unwilling to take a hint and see that she doesn't feel the same way. and that question is the last thing she says to him before he ruins her life forever. it's unfair.
This is the moment that sets up the actual horror of the rest of the film (because there has been NO horror before this point). Even without the wishes, this is still the turning point. Bear was given an opportunity to confess like an adult, so that he and Nikki could handle it like adults. Nikki asked because she was telling him it had passed the point of awkward/cute/whatever and they needed to talk about it and he refused to! If it hadnât been for the wish, Bear wouldâve spent the next however long longing for/lusting after Nikki and it would have only gotten more and more uncomfortable the longer he refused to admit it and also refused to let it go. The wish is a plot device to highlight and exaggerate horror of those sorts of situations. Heâs behaving childishly and selfishly and itâs going to harm himself and all of his relationshipsâbut more than any of that, itâs going to harm the person on the other side of his obsession.

It doesn't matter whether Nikki liked Bear back, actually. That's the entire point of the movie, that it doesn't matterâBear never cared about how Nikki felt, just about the fact that he wanted her.
Honestly. Can we talk about how it starts with Nikki wanting to go home after the bar and all of her friends arguing that thatâs lame, we want to have fun, come on, while she repeatedly tells them she doesnât feel good and needs a ride. In a movie about taking away a womanâs autonomy I think itâs interesting that the first thing the friend group does is to ignore her no.
Hey does anyone else think about how Toriel isn't doing well financially but she still makes a full pie for her kid two nights in a row and then a hearty pancake breakfast for them and their friend the next morning. Do you think about how we don't see Toriel eating the pie or the pancakes. She's eating raw granulated sugar and that's it. When she finally eats in Chapter 5 she only asks for simple (and cheap) toast with honey. Do you think about Toriel encouraging her child to go to the Festival where there is plenty of food while she stays home on her own. Do you think about how Toriel used to "LOVE her cooking shows" and "LAUGH, glowingly, along with each new recipe, feverishly taking notes on each step to make them for her family..." Do you think about Toriel never expecting this care to be reciprocated and continuing to cook for her family while she does not eat. Do you. Do you think about Toriel.
something to be said about how when we see Bear and Nikki have sex in Obsession (2026), it's as dispassionate and lifeless as it is. setting aside the obvious consent implications of fucking a wish-hijacked Nikki, you'd think that the wish-hijacked Nikki would be, well "freaky" in bed -- more reactive, more emotive, hungrier for him, more all over him -- but she's literally just laying there, arms literally at her sides. my best reading is that, since her entire existence is now about Bear, it's just about what Bear wants out of sex, and Bear frankly has very little sexual imagination or consideration for Nikki's possible wants as a sexual being (or wants in general, given, well, the premise of the movie). he wants to have sex with Nikki, but doesn't really want to have sex with Nikki, if that makes sense. what he and Nikki are doing sure is definiable as sexual intercourse but that's basically all that can be said about it. in this way, the wish-hijacked Nikki's blandness in bed reminds me of an observed behavior in predator animals, where despite their immense strength and power, they are actually quite loathe to expend a single ounce of their energy reserves more than necessary on prey, resulting in observably "lazy" behavior

the reveal that ian and nikki were hooking up before bear used the one wish willow is really disturbing to me because that context takes the opening scene from âoh heâs just horrible with women and/or doesnât know nikki wellâ to âheâs deliberately trying to fuck up bearâs chances with nikki.â and yeah, nikki doesnât like bear like that, but what if she did? heâs deliberately trying to ruin their chances together without giving nikki a say in it. he interrupts them at the bar on purpose. he tries to keep them from getting a moment alone together. his âworryâ when nikki is acting up is really jealousy now that sheâs with bear instead of him. he digs into her estranged dadâs medical history!! ian is JUST as controlling and weird as bear and is constantly trying to exercise control over nikki and their relationship, and i think itâs really disturbing that every guy in her life felt like they had this âclaimâ to her or that being with her was their right
the movie title isnât because bear made nikki be obsessed with him. itâs.. his obsession. with her. with the idea of her that heâs so in love with he canât see the real her before he makes his wish. the real obsession isnât nikkiâs false infatuation, itâs bearâs inability to take no for an answer- his desire trumps everything else, even the wellbeing of his friends, and thatâs the true obsession.
(Would I call this the climax of the story? No, but there's some very climactic scenes happening in it! After everyone got in place last chapter, the stage is set for The Plan. I was crazy motivated here, and got a lot of writing done in a short time because I was so excited :D)
(Once everyone is gathered together in Faorise Hollow, it's time for things to be set into motion. Stacy and John reunite, but they have to instantly jump into action, as the being within John's mind is quickly taking over. The other creatures have a plan for this... will it work? Heh. Have fun with this! :3)
âââââ
It was surprisingly easy to settle back into the Iontachsâ house in Faorise Hollow. Once Colleen got home, she said that Stacy and the boys could go back to using the guest room, which was a relief because she didnât seem to have any hard feelings about that... Ragdoll creature controlling her. Nick was also excited to have Mathew and Larkin back, and immediately dragged Larkin outside to draw on the pavement with some chalk. Stacy relaxed slightlyâjust slightlyâthinking that things might go back to normal. Yeah, there was still Misery to worry about, and she had to make sure things were okay with Colleen, and also figure out a way to pay the family back for letting them stayâbut it seemed like there would be a brief period of peace before the horrors began closing in.
And then... that night, she heard its voice in her ear. âitâs time. head to the edge of town.â
She was in the houseâs kitchen when she heard this, getting a snack, and she was so startled that she dropped the apple sheâd just washed. Thank god she hadnât yet started to cut it. âWh-what? Already?â It seemed much too soon...
âwhat do you mean âalready?ââ Misery repeated. âwerenât you surprised and upset that you had to wait at all?â
âWell yeah, but...â Stacy paused. âWhen you donât give a timeline, I assume the waiting is going to be... indefinite.â
âno. sorry. we didnât know for sure how long it would take. so that is indefinite when you think about it. it just turned out weâre ready to go a lot sooner than expected.â
âI-I see.â Stacy looked down into the sink. The apple sheâd been planning on eating as a tasty snack had fallen into the drain, blocking it up. âIs this... time-sensitive? Do I need to go out there.. now now?â
âsooner is better,â Misery said. âbut i know. you want to talk to the kids, donât you?â
âAnd... Colleen and Roisin, if I can,â Stacy mumbled. âThough I think Colleen might still be at work...â She looked out the kitchen window. It was getting late in the year, so it was already dark, even though it wasnât that late in the day. She sighed. âJust Roisin and the boys, then.â She reached into the sink and awkwardly pulled out the apple. Her nails pierced its skin, even though she didnât mean for that to happen. For some reason, it made her wince. But to put her mind off that, she turned and left the kitchen, heading upstairs to the guest bedroom.
Both Mathew and Larkin were in here. Mathew was playing on his newly-found Switch while it charged, and Larkin was excitedly showing him pictures of the chalk drawings he and Nick had done earlier. âSee, theyâre like... actually printed out! Isnât that cool? You can hold the pictures!â
Stacy laughed idly. âOh... is that so wonderful? You know, when I was your age, thatâs the only way we interacted with pictures.â
âMom!â Larkin turned around to look at her, beaming. âYou saw the drawings earlier, right?â
âYes, if youâll remember, you brought me outside to look at them.â
âI do remember! Now look at this! Nick showed me his momâs camera and Miss Roisin showed us how to print the pictures from the computer...â He trailed off slowly, his eyes going over Stacyâs shoulder. âMom? Why... why does it look...â He paused. âWhy is it so close to you?â
Mathew looked up as well, eyes going wide. âIs something wrong?â
âNo, nothingâs wrong,â Stacy quickly said. âI donât think so, at least. But...â
âItâs... itâs time, isnât it?â Mathew put his console down. âTime for whatever youâre here to do. With John, right?â
Stacy nodded. âApparently, Iâve got to go out to the edge of town now. Ideally... quickly.â
Larkin hopped off the edge of the bed. âLetâs go, then!â
âNo, no, Lark, I...â Stacy sighed. She walked forward, crouching down so she was closer to Larkinâs eye level... though she didnât actually have to go that far down. Was he hitting a growth spurt? âI think... you and Mathew should stay here.â
Larkinâs eyes went wide. âBut... but we...â He looked at Mathew for help.
âMom, we want to help,â Mathew said. âWe at least want to see John! Itâs been forever since we saw him, a-and we were worried about him, so... we want to know heâs alright!â
Stacy laughed a little. âJohn is... not...â She didnât want to say it bluntly, but she had to explain. âJohn is... not hurt, but heâs not... really alright. The last time I saw him... that thing was... making him do really awful things. A-and Iâm sure John would appreciate you two coming out to see him, but... I donât want you two to get hurt. And the thing controlling John... I donât think itâd hesitate to hurt you if you were nearby. Even though John wouldnât want to. Do you two understand?â
The two of them looked at each other. Larkinâs eyes were still wide, though it wasnât clear if that was from fear or something else. Mathewâs expression was more grim. âBut... but Mom, we came over here to see you!â Larkin said. âYou canât just...â
Stacy tried not to flinch at the pang in her heart. âI donât want to leave you guys,â she whispered. âBut... I need you to be safe. I... I really, really do. Misery brought you here without me knowing, and that wasnât... fair.â
âWe decided to come here,â Mathew said stubbornly. âWeâre facing our fears and shit! Really hard, bad stuff is going to happen, but we canât justâjust stay here and avoid it! We want to help you, Mom!â
Tears welled in Stacyâs eyes, but she blinked them back and smiled through them. âAnd Iâm... Iâm proud that you want that. That youâre willing to face danger to help people. I think... I think youâre both wonderful boys, a-and youâll be wonderful men when you grow up. But... if something happens to you... you wonât... get that chance. And I-Iâd...â She took a shaky breath. âItâs... itâs my job as a Mom to protect you until you can protect yourselves. And... I think... this is a situation where you need protecting.â
âWhat about you Mom?!â Larkin cried. âWhat if you need protecting?!â
âOh, pumpkin...â Stacy pressed a hand to her heart. âThatâs... thatâs so brave of you. But I can protect myself. I promise I can.â
âand if you canât, i will.â
She ignored that whisper, hoping Larkin couldnât hear it with his special senses. âIf you really want to help me, it would help me the most to know that youâre here, and youâre safe. If Iâm worried about you being in danger, I wonât be able to do whatever I need to, because Iâll be thinking about you, and getting ready to run off to protect you no matter what. So... please. I need you two to stay here. Just until... this is all over with.â
Mathew and Larkin glanced at each other once again. â...fine,â Mathew said. âBut I want to know where youâre going. A-and I want to know when youâll be back!â
âFair enough.â Stacy nodded. âI... Apparently Iâm going to the edge of town. As for when Iâll be back...â She paused, then turned slightly towards the presence she felt on her shoulder. âIs there a more solid timeline for this thing?â
âsort of...â Misery said slowly. âsangria says it would be surprised if this takes until morning... but that itâs not impossible to take that long.â
âSo youâre saying I should be back here by morning?â Stacy asked. âWhat time?â
âi donât know time numbers that well. when the sun is well above the horizon. no longer twilight.â
ââWhen the sun is well above the horizonâ... so about... 7:10 tomorrow morning?â Stacy guessed. That was probably the earliest everything was completely bright around this time of year...
âActually, itâll probably be, like, 7:30 when dawn is over,â Mathew said. âCause weâre farther north than in Los Angeles.â He nodded. âAlright. Mom, if youâre not back by that time... uh... weâll do something.â
âJust, whatever you do, be careful,â Stacy said, giving him a small smile. âI... Iâll walk down Hewam Street until I reach the edge of town. Is there... anything you two need before I go?â
In response, Larkin jumped into a hug, throwing his arms around her. She gasped slightly, then naturally hugged him back. âBe careful, Mom...â Larkin mumbled. âWeâre going to do something if youâre not back tomorrow. Remember that.â
âYeah...â Mathew nodded. âIâm not... I-Iâm not going to hug you too, cause thatâs like... final. And this isnât going to be final. But...â
Stacy laughed a little. Once Larkin let her go, she got up, and moved over to Mathew, putting an arm around his shoulder and squeezing. âIs that fine?â
âYeah.â Mathew nodded. âNow... go and hurry. And stuff.â
âKick the glitch thingâs butt!â Larkin said.
âYeah, kick its ass,â Mathew added with a bit more bite.
âI will.â Stacy smiled. âI love you. Goodââ She stopped. Goodbye felt... final. Mathew was right. âIâll see you two later.â
âSee you later,â Mathew said, looking relieved that she didnât say the G word.
âSee you later!â Larkin nodded. âTake one of the pictures!â He shoved one of the photos of the chalk drawings into her hand.
âI will.â Stacy laughed. âSee you later,â she said again. And then, after a second of hesitation, she turned and walked out.
She didnât have to go far to find Roisin. The old woman was waiting at the base of the stairs. âSorry, couldnâ help but overhear ye,â she said. âSound carries in tâis old house.â She chuckled, but then looked serious. âYouâre not goinâ into the woods, are you?â
âNo.â Stacy shook her head. âI know better than that. Even if Iâm asked to, I wonât go in there.â Misery shifted behind her, as if offended she didnât trust it or its friends. Which... she didnât trust the cat one, at least.
âAlrighâ.â Roisin held something out. A heavy-looking flashlight made of blue medal, the sort with a handle that you held onto. âTake tâis to light your way. Even if youâre not goinâ to the forest, itâll be dark.â
â...thanks,â Stacy said, taking the flashlight.
âTâat dial near the handle can make it brighter,â Roisin added.
âOh. Nice flashlight. Erâtorch.â She chuckled a little. âIâll be sure to return it.â
âAnd return yourself as well, lassie,â Roisin said.
Stacy nodded back, matching Roisinâs serious expression. âI will. Until I do... watch Mathew and Larkin?â
âOâ course.â Roisin gave the slightest smile back. âNow go.â
Stacy nodded, and took a deep breath, heading down the hallway. She paused before the front door for a second. The hand on her shoulder squeezed tighter. âDonât rush me,â she muttered as she twisted the doorknob and headed out. âNow... letâs go save John.â
And she walked out into the darkness.
* * * * * * * * * *
John woke with a pounding in his head. Two of them, actually. One seemed to be caused by the multiple blows to the skull, the last things he remembered before fading away into fuzzy non-consciousness. The other was something... internal. He could tell. Heâd never had a migraine before, but... this felt similar to descriptions heâd read. It made opening his eye difficult, as the bright light of these hallways stabbed into his brain.
âGuten Morgen.â
He groaned at the sound of that voice. Right. He was still in that doctor creatureâs clutches. Being... moved around, it seemed. Something beneath him was making a rattling sound, and he could feel forward motion. He turned his head to look for the sound. The rest of his body tried to turn as well, but it was stopped. Something was holding him to the surface beneath him. He turned his attention to that instead. This was... an old hospital gurney, made of spindly metal and a thin mattress. And leather straps as well, which were the reason he couldnât move. He could see one going across his chest, and feel more around his ankles, knees, and stomach. That last one, across his midsection, was particularly tight, because it wasnât just going across his torso. His wrists had been bound together in front of him, and the midsection strap was going over his arms as well, pinning them against his stomach. âIsnâ thâs... much?â he mumbled.
âNein,â said a voice near his feet.
âNotarzt is right,â a voice near his head said. âYou know youâre a risk right now. We donât want Ľó¹ŧÄĂ causing trouble before we get to our destination.â
Right... the other one was here too. Sangria. âStill...â John muttered. âYou donâ even... trust me to... walk?â
âNope!â Sangria said, sounding almost cheerful. âBe happy youâre not being dragged on the ground. Thatâs what Notarzt originally wanted.â
The doctor creatureâNotarztâgrumbled under its breath.
John tested the straps some more, wriggling a little. But he was firmly secured to this gurney. He sighed... honestly, he knew this was probably for the best. Because the pounding in his head, the internal one, was growing stronger. He squinted up at the lights above. Each one had a halo around it... some sort of strange aura. Was that from the blows to the head? Or was it...
âItâs not long now, you know,â the voice in his head whispered.
âShut up,â John grumbled.
âI wasnâtâoh.â Sangria paused. âItâs talking to you... isnât it?â
âYeah,â John admitted; he didnât see any problems with admitting that. Besides, Sangria was smart. It would know if he was lying.
âHmm... we donât have much time, then,â Sangria hummed. âIf we want to do this, it canât get too deep into your mind. Or else it might start gathering power. Notarzt?â
The motion sped up, jostling Johnâs head around. He shouted in surprise and pain as the sudden hurrying forward exacerbated the head trauma.
âI wonder what they have planned,â the voice mused. âI donât know how they could possibly undo what Iâve done to you. Youâre on the verge of being me, you know. Can you feel it? Do you still know who you are?â
John slammed his head backwards against the gurney, crying out as he did so.
âIdiot,â the voice snapped. âThe pain of that blow wonât distract you from me. Can you feel yourself slipping away?â A strange sensation filled Johnâs mind, like fingers digging into a jar of slime. He shuddered, choking back the urge to hurl at the feeling. âSoon, you wonât be able to stop me. And neither will they.â The voice chuckled. âNo matter what their little plan is.â
The gurney abruptly stopped, jolting him around. âWir sind da,â Notarzt said. Footsteps, and then its face came into view, glaring down at John. The straps loosened, and John found he could breathe again... meaning... was he not breathing before? âRaus aus meinem Haus.â
â...sure,â John muttered. âJust... step away so I can... get up.â
Notarztâs eye narrowed, and it backed up. John tried to sit up, but it was still difficult, as the binding around his wrists hadnât been removed. As he struggled, he felt hands grip his shoulders and push him up. âThere you go,â Sangria said.
âI can help myself,â John said.
âOh, were you not struggling just now?â Sangria asked, very clearly amused.
John bit his tongue trying not to reply. He simply swung his legs to the side and stood upâwhich was easier than sitting upâand looked around. They were at the end of a long hallway, seeming to extend forever behind them. In front of them was a featureless wooden door. Notarzt stood with its hand on the handle, looking at John expectantly. âYeah, yeah...â he grumbled. âFor what itâs worth, Iâve never... meant to give you trouble, if that makes sense. Even when I sorta... threatened you in the past, it was... just because I was desperate.â
âDas ist mir egal,â Notarzt said bluntly. âRaus aus meinem Haus.â
Sangria chuckled. âOur friend here is a bit low on patience, John.â He patted Johnâs shoulder, then walked around him, pushed the gurney to the side, and stood by Notarzt. âYour part is done. Go protect yourself once weâre out.â
Notarzt looked at it and nodded. âDanke.â Then it looked back at John... expectantly.
John just stared back. He didnât really have sympathy for Notarzt. This creature fed on the pain of humans, and it tortured people to get its food. But he couldnât help but feel strangely guilty. Something must have happened between it and ÄÄŽÄŻÂŞĂ... and since he carried that voice within him now, there was... the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. But he tried to shake that off. What happened between žèĂĂŞÂŹ and Notarzt wasnât his fault. It probably happened long before he got caught up in everything. Besides... they were both horrible. âI think I speak for both of us when I say... I hope we never meet again,â he said.
And Notarzt actually laughed. It opened the door, and gestured to the doorway. This door led to an outsideâdark, the ground covered in grass and loose rocks. âRaus aus meinem Haus,â it said again... though without the bite of before.
John nodded at it. He stepped forward, passing Sangria. âAre you coming too?â
And so, he did. He took a deep breath and stepped outside.
It was dark here... certainly nighttime, though maybe early on. Had he been out that long? And where... was he? He turned around, seeing the door embedded in the side of a brick wall. He faced forward again, and saw the ground gradually sloping upwards, until it met a dark mass of tall stalks, broken up by... white mist, which stood out in the darkness. Wait... was he...?
âJohn! Is that you?!â
He gasped. No. There was no way she was here. She was back in America, wasnât she?! But he knew that voice anywhere. He turned around... and met the eyes of a woman with red hair down to her ribs, wavy, even with a large curl or two. Her brown eyes were wide in shock, and she looked pale under the freckles. Beneath the brightness of her flashlight... he saw a shadow of something else behind her, its hand on her shoulder.
â...Stacy,â he breathed. And he wasnât sure if it was relief or dread he felt in his stomach.
* * * * * * * * * *
The road Stacy walked down led all the way to the end of town, where it met a paved circle, a few brick buildings lining its circumference. Beyond that, there was only darkness, the ground slowly forming a hill that led up to the forest... Cait Coillâs forest, with all its fog inside. âkeep going,â Misery whispered.
âIâm not going into the forest,â Stacy said firmly.
âyou donât have to. just go around the back of these houses. there should be something on a back wall.â
âThe back walls...â Stacy repeated in a mutter. Luckily, the houses here didnât have fences or walls like they did in other cities. The back just faded into the countryside around it. Stacy pointed her flashlight straight ahead and walked around the first house on the left, leaving behind the safety of pavement and streetlights for the darkness behind it.
She walked around these houses, glancing at the back wall of each as she did. Nothing really stood out that much to her... and surely Misery would tell her if she missed something. So she just kept goingâ
Until she looked ahead and saw a figure stumble out from a door in the back of a house.
It took her a second to realize he was familiar.
âJohn! Is that you?!â she shouted, running closer to meet him.
He turned to look at her, an expression of absolute shock on his haggard face. He looked... awful. His clothes were stained reddish brown, though the harshness of it all had faded away into just clouds of shapes, and his hair and beard had gotten longer, more gray streaks lining the brown. The green eye had been hidden beneath bandages, but a strange greenish-black cloud colored the spot where the eye was, like ink was seeping through. His normal blue eye was bloodshot and had bags under it. And the clothesâthe bloodstained clothesâhung strangely on his frame in a way she couldnât quite place. His hands were also bound, a belt of some kind wrapped around his wrists and lower forearms.
â...Stacy,â he said quietly.
âJohn! It is you!â She hurried over... but then slowed a bit. The last time the two of them had been face-to-face... it hadnât ended well. âAre you... alright?â
âIâm... I-Iâm...â John seemed to struggle with putting it into words.
A second figure stepped out of the doorwayâwhich then disappeared the next time Stacy blinked. âHeâs in control of himself for now, but we all think that wonât be for much longer.â
âYou!â Stacy gasped. âJaqâSangria!â
Sangria bowed. âAlways good to see you again. And you too, Stacy.â
âgood to see you,â Misery whispered.
âStacy, I...â John swallowed a lump in his throat... and Stacy could hear a sound. Like liquid pattering against metal protrusions, but muffled by some sort of padding. âI... Iâm happy to see you, but... Iâm... Th-they didnât... say youâd be here...â
Stacy laughed drily. âThey donât really tell us much, do they? At least I knew I was... coming to see you.â Her eyes flicked up and down as she looked him over once again. âI... donât need to tell you how bad you look, do I?â
John laughed. It sounded... different than it had before. As if someone had played with the settings of a recording, then tried to set them back to normal, but couldnât quite remember where all the sliders went. âNo... and I feel just as bad, let me tell you.â His face fell as he spoke in a hushed voice. âThereâs... changes... i-inside me... I can feel them. It wants... it wants to become me... or... it wants me to become it? And it... I donât...â His eye welled with tears. âNobody knows what will happen to me if it succeeds.â
Stacy felt tears threaten her eyes as well. âOh, John...â She stepped closer, even as Misery tightened its grip on her shoulder.
âI... I canât live with this anymore,â John whispered. âThis whole time, Iâve just been... existing with it. Dealing with it. Surviving, but nothing more. But... not anymore. I want... I want to do something.â He laughed. âItâs like Iâm treading water, but now Iâm looking around, and Iâm realizing that thereâs stuff floating all around that I can grab onto. That can help me look for... look for land or something. If I can just figure out where land would be.â
Stacy nodded. âIâm going to help you, I promise,â she said firmly. âThese things, they... you know they donât like that glitchy one, I donât have to tell you that. And they have a plan!â
John looked up, surprised. âYou know the plan? What is it?â
âI know about the plan,â Stacy said. âBut they wonât tell me much more!â She glared at Sangria, but it just shrugged. âIt... it involves me, I... I-I can do something. I think because we know each other.â
âDo... what?â John asked.
âI... I-I donât know!â Now that she was saying it out loud, it felt... foolish, that she didnât know more. That she didnât ask more questions or demand more answers. âThese guys are so stubborn.â
âYour main goal is to get close,â Sangria said, stepping in.
âWhat, like... physically close?â Stacy took another hesitant step towards John.
âYes... but not yet,â Sangria said. âWe need to wait.â
John flinched. âI-it keeps... it keeps saying itâs close,â he whispered. âThat itâs... itâs going to be... soon.â He shuddered. âI-I can move around on my own for now, but who knows when itâll try to take control again?â
âit will be soon,â Misery whispered. âwe can all sense you changing. like an eclipse. the moon is covering the sun, and soon, there will be total coverage. and at that moment, weâll strike.â
Stacy went pale. âWait... weâre waiting until right before John gets fully taken over? L-l-like... permanently?!â
Johnâs legs wobbled, and he almost fell over before he managed to take control of them. âWh-what?â
âItâs a very small moment of opportunity,â Sangria said. âBut itâs coming. And for it to work... you need to be a bit closer to the forest.â
âIâm not going in the forest!â Stacy squeaked. âI promised Roisin!â
âOf course, of course,â Sangria nodded. âI wouldnât want to go in there, either. But you need to be close enough for the cat to react in case things go wrong. If ÄÌŽ°Ţ tries to make John run away, or if it tries to hurt you, for example.â
John looked towards the distant forest. He took a shaky breath. âItâs okay, Stacy. I donât... I donât think these things would hurt you... not while youâve got that thing of your own. Whatâs its name, again?â
âUh, itâs calling itself Misery...â Stacy said slowly.
âyou will be safe,â Misery promised.
âIâm not just worried about me, though!â Stacy protested. âWhat about John?â
âHeâll be fine, too,â Sangria said. âI promise. Swear on my long, long, long life.â
Stacy pressed her lips together. There was still a seed a doubt, a distant scream of distrust. âWe... wonât get too close...â she said slowly. âY-you promise that John will be okay?â
âIf the cat tries anything prematurely, Iâll be glad to step in,â Sangria said.
â...alright.â Stacy nodded. She reached out to John. âDo you... need help? I think itâs hard to walk up a hill without your arms. Balance and stuff.â
John smiled slightly. âThatâd be great.â He walked closer to Stacyâonly for his body to suddenly jerk to the side stumbling back. The smile on his face faded to horror. Again, he tried to take a step, but the second he raised his foot, it was like something suddenly shoved him to the side. He cried out, and Sangria caught him before he fell. âN-no!â
âIs that it?!â Stacy gasped.
âI-it doesnât want me to get close to you!â John cried out. âI can hear it, I canââ His whole body flinched. âI-it knows youâre part of the plan! It wonât let me get close!â
âWe have to move,â Sangria announced, and started dragging John towards the forest.
âI-I can w-w-walk!â John gasped. He tried to find purchase, but his own legs were fighting him as he wriggled like a worm on a hook.
âJohn! Wait!â Stacy ran after them.
âGo up the hill!â Sangria said.
âlook, thereâs a small rock there!â Misery hissed, and the beam of Stacyâs flashlight caught on a flat, wide rock, pale brown in color. âwe can stop there. itâs halfway to the forest!â
âO-okay!â Stacy nodded. She ran up the side of the hillâwhich wasnât really a hill, more of a gentle slope that occasionally had spots of more level ground. That rock was smack dab in the middle of one of these level spots. She stopped next to it, panting, and turned around to see Sangria dragging a struggling John up the hill right behind her. It glanced back at her, smiled, and put on a sudden burst of speed, depositing John on the ground about six feet away from her. âJohn!â
âS-S-S-St-Stacy-y-y,â John gasped, his voice stammering unnaturally, like a CD player with a scratch. âSomethin-thin-thin-thingâs very wro-wro-wrong.â
âItâs really starting now,â Sangria said grimly. It began backing away, moving back down the hill.
A laugh escaped Johnâs throat. âDo you think you all can stop me?â A voice hissedâa voice that didnât sound like him, but didnât not sound like him. âI am doing something never before seen! A creature of the ÄĂÄŁÂĄ ŧĚ becoming flesh and blood! Walking among them!â John rolled to the side and heaved, though nothing came out. âS-stop it!â he gasped, his voice once again his own.
âJohn!â Stacy dropped her flashlight in a panic and rushed towards himâ
Johnâs body moved with surprising speed, swiveling in place and lashing out at her, kicking her legs. She cried out as she fell. âYou stay the fuck back!â that strange voice hissed. It let out that same laugh from before. It kept going, the peals deforming, disjointing. âItâs almost time. I told you, you wouldnât be able to fight me! I was saving my strength for this, and now you can do nothing! Because you are nothing, Jack!â
Stacy froze in the middle of getting up. âWh-what...? J...Jack...?â
âYou can hear that now?â The voice laughed. âThe person I ÄĂŧ¾œĂÄ... As I become flesh, I suppose my property becomes more digestible. Relish that name, itâs the last time youâll hear it!â
She stared at the grin on Johnâs faceâno, on Jackâs face. She stared... and realized something. His blue eye... there was a hint of green in the corner, near the tear duct. And it was slowly staining the white sclera. Ink in water. Blood in water. Her heart jolted. âNo! No! John!â She began crawling across the ground. âFight it! You have to fight him!â
The voice growled. It lashed out again, kicking her in the collarbone, and she fell backwards, gasping.
âthe time is coming,â Misery said in her ear. âhurry.â
Stacy gritted her teeth. She clambered up, despite the pain in her chest and neckâand leapt forward, landing on top of Jackâs legs. They started to flail immediately, but she wrapped her arms around them, pinning them together. âYou have to fight, Jack!â she shouted. âF-for as long as you can! I know itâs hard! You have to try!â She stretched out one hand, grabbing onto the ground, pulling herself even closer. âEven if youâre just treading waterâlet me be there! Let me help you!â
âS-S-St-Stacy-cy-cy.â Jackâs voice gasped out, his eyelid fluttering. The green had reached the edge of his iris, infecting it as well, turning it dark. âI-I-I-I wonât let i-it...â His whole body spasmed, and he coughed violently. Blood came out of his mouth in spurts, along with bits of metal. Wires dangled from the edge of his lips, disappearing down his throat. She could hear them in his breathing.
âYouâre doing great,â she said through gritted teeth. Jackâs body was momentarily still, so she crawled her way closer, wrapping her arms around his torso. âI got you. Jack. I got you.â
âTh-th-thanks...â Jack gasped, choking on the single word. His eye was rolling back, staring at nothing. The bandage was thoroughly soaked through with strange green-black liquid that dripped down the side of his face. And... the ones around his neck were the same way. His visible eye was half green, and the green was quickly gaining ground.
âItâs almost time,â Sangria called. âI can feel it from here. Misery!â
âyouâll need this.â Misery gently grabbed her right wrist. âopen your hand.â She did so, and felt something press into her palm, which she wrapped her fingers around. The area grew brighter slightly. The flashlight.
âWh-what do I do with it?â Stacy stammered.
âThe corruption originates from his throat wound,â Sangria said. âShine the light there.â
âUh... okay...â
Jack made a gargling, choking sound, and then the voice laughed again. âReally? Whatâs a flashlight going to do?â it asked mockingly.
âit will help,â Misery said. âyou just have to trust me.â
Stacy swallowed nervously and nodded. âDid you add some... special qualities to this flashlight?â
âYep!â Sangria said. âThanks for dropping it. You didnât see the bit of fog reach out towards it? That flashlight is now imbued with the power of many souls... many more than it has.â
The voice just scoffed. âSure. Fine. Shine a light in my face.â
Jack was still struggling, though it seemed like he was trying to fight back the force controlling him, as the struggles kept getting weaker, even as the green in his eye took over more and more. Stacy kept moving around, trying to find a good angle where she could shine the light on Jackâs throat wound while also keeping him secure. She ended up kneeling on his chest, pressing his head down with her left hand while she held the flashlight in her other. The creature made his face smile at her. The iris of his eye was almost fully black, just a rim of blue near the edge.
âItâs almost over!â Sangria shouted. âHurry!â
âI-Iâm shining it!â Stacy gasped. âItâs not... not that bright!â
âYou have to get it closer, then,â Sangria said. âAnd faster, too! Jab it downwards.â
â...what?!â Stacy blinked in confusion.
âlike youâre punching him in the throat,â Misery asked. âremember those self-defense classes? do that with what youâre holding.â
âAnd... that will... fix it?!â Stacy stammered in confusion.
âa fast and close motion will, yes.â
âD-d-d-do it, S-Stacy,â Jack stammered. âG-g-g-get rid o-of it-t.â
âI... I donât want to hurt you, Jack!â She shouted.
âheâll be better after this,â Misery whispered. âit will all be over. itâs so easy. there will be no more misery for him anymore.â
Stacy tightened her grip on the flashlight. A coil of doubt was settling in her stomach. This felt... wrong. But they were right, there was no time to act! Wasnât there? Maybe if she just turned up the brightness on the flashlight. Roisin mentioned there was a dial on the handle to do that! Her thumb moved upwards to try and find where that dial was...
...
Wait a second.
This... wasnât the same flashlight.
She wasnât... holding it the same way. The one Roisin gave her had a handle, and you held onto it... horizontally. This one... she was holding onto... vertically. Like a classic flashlight.
âdonât.â
Misery knew what she was going to do. It didnât want her to do it. But she did anyway, as she turned to look at the flashlight in her hand...
It wasnât a flashlight at all.
It was a knife.
Gleaming in the moonlightâand in the beam of light still being created by the true flashlight, six feet to the side.
Stacy gaped at it. âWh-what theââ
âdo it stacy!â Misery shouted. âput him out of his misery!â
Jackâs eye widened. His iris also locked onto the knife. Shocked disbelief took over his expressionâbefore the voice started to laugh.
âSHE KNOWS!â Sangria shouted.
Stacy started to drop the knifeâbut another hand shot out, leaving a dusty mark on hers as it wrapped her fingers more securely over the grip.
And then the fog surged down the hill. It moved rapidly, more like water barreling down a river than mist. Stacy cried out in shockâsince when could the fog leave the forest?!âand that was all the time she had to do before her vision was completely grayed out. She couldnât see anything! She coughed, choking on the mist.
âSheâs all yours,â said a familiar voice... one they hadnât heard in a while. Cait Coill. âAgain, I mean. But be quick!â
Stacy shouted âWhatâs happening?! Stop!â... but her words didnât leave her mouth. An unnatural silence had fallen over the area. And she felt something wrap around her wrist and her neck.
The Ragdoll was here too. They hadnât told her that. They hadnât told her anything.
And as that realization started to sink in, her arm moved on its own, plunging the knife downwards, towards the faint form of Jackâs neck through the fog.
Time seemed to slow for her as she went into panic mode. All this time, sheâd been trying to save John! To save Jack! But that wasnât their goal at all, was it? They only wanted to stop Ă ĹŧŒ, and they didnât care what humans they hurt in the process.
She was going to stab him, no matter what. But maybeâmaybe she could shift the blade off course. For Jack. For the only one whoâd stood by her, the only one who knew what this was like! Heâd gone through enough hell. She wouldnât let him go through some more... especially not by her own hand. He was her friend.
She gritted her teeth and poured all her thought and will into moving that downward plunge.
The blade didnât go in. Not where it was supposed to. It hit bone, not throat.
Jack screamed. Despite the silence, he screamed.
The fog blew back in a circle around them. Stacy felt those strings around her wrist and neck disappear, as if theyâd been pulled off. She looked down at Jack and saw the knife had hit his collarbone. In a panic, she tried to pull it out, but it was... stuck?! Had the point been that deeply embedded in the bone?!
She gave up. No time to keep trying! She could see figures moving about in the fog, which started to creep closer. They had to get out of here! Both of them! Stacy looked down at Jack, and wrapped her arms around him, lifting him upâ! Adrenaline pumped her full of strength and she was able to throw him back over her shoulder. Glancing around, she spotted the flashlight and ran that way, scooping it up before turning and running down the hill, moving so fast that she felt sheâd topple forward at any time.
âstacy, stop!â
No, she wasnât going to listen to that voice anymore! She kept running forward, through the fog.
âStop her already!â
âIâm doing it!â
The mist wrapped around her legs, grabbing them, holding them. She yelped as she almost tripped, but managed to stumble to a halt. Bits of fog began clinging onto her like cotton. âGet back!â She screeched, waving the flashlight beam around wildly like that would do something. Maybe it did, maybe her flailing around shook them off, either way, the second she felt them loosen she kept running forward. She couldnât stop! The second she stopped, the fog would take them again! So she kept running, barreling down the hill.
Until the ground suddenly leveled, sending a jolt up her leg, and she burst out of the fog. She was behind the houses again. Her lungs were starting to tear at her ribcage, but she couldnât stop now! Out of the corner of her vision, she saw the fog back up, then surge forward again like a tidal wave. So she let out a cry as she put on another burst of speed.
âSheâs so fast! One of you get her!â
As she ran around the house, stepping from grass onto the pavement, she realized she couldnât hear her footsteps. She staggered to a stop, trying to catch her breath, and her eyes darted around wildly. Looking for any sign of it. Because it was following her! She saw no sign of it around her, though, soâwait. She looked upwards, towards to sky... and saw a pair of spiral eyes looking down at her from the edge of a rooftop.
She instantly began running again, letting out a yell as she didâthough no one would know, not even her, as the area stayed silent. Silent except for some discordant music, playing from behind her. Getting closer.
Fuck. She wasnât sure she could outrun this one. It crawled across the rooftops as easily as she walked through the streets. But... it couldnât attack her from above if she didnât walk under anything.
She was running on the sidewalk next to the street, but now she turned and stepped off the curb and into the middle of the road. It was probably safe enough to do so, given how most people in the small town preferred to walk anyway. And the main streets were wide. As long as she stayed in the middle, sheâd be far away from the houses and even out of reach of the street lamps.
Behind her, the fog was swirling at the edges of the houses.
Stacyâs legs were burning, but she put on a burst of speed. It was almost a straight shot from here to the Iontachsâ house! If she got there, she could at least put some walls between her and some of these creatures!
The discordant music kept coming from somewhere. She squinted aheadâoccasionally seeing something glint in the lamplight. Like a spiderweb. No matter what else was ahead of her, she avoided those glints, staying in the middle of the road. It wouldnât trap her. They wouldnât take her. They wouldnât kill Jack!
Sooner than she thought, she turned a corner onto the Iontachsâ street. She could almost see the houseâ
âStacy!â A figure gasped, standing on the sidewalk around the corner. âWhat are you doing?!â
âC-Colleen?!â Stacy gaped. âWhat are you... doing out here?! Itâs not safe! Thereâs... creatures!â
âI-I can see that, Stacy, I see the fog.â Colleen nodded, glancing around nervously. She stepped out into the street. âAre you okay? Whoâs that man youâre carrying? Oh my god heâs injured!â
âY-yeah, he is.â Stacy paused for a moment, gasping for air.
âHere, I-I can help.â Colleen walked closer. âIâm a nurse.â
âNo!â Stacy backed away. âNobody get close! I-it can be dangerous!â Even though Jackâs been limp for a while, he could lash out at any second.
Colleen blinked, then smiled. âStacy, you know Iâm a friend.â
âY-yeah, I...â Stacy hesitated. She narrowed her eyes. Colleen... she was wearing... a red shirt.
â...Stacy?â the figure who looked like Colleen asked quietly.
Stacy didnât answer, bursting into a run. She spun aroundâand almost walked right into a triangle of glinting air that extended outwards from a street lamp, like a flap of canvas in the wind. Quickly, she course-corrected, and began a dead sprint down the street. The house was so close!
âDamn it!â The figure in red cursed. âGet back here, Stacy! You donât understand whatâs at risk!â
âI do!â Stacy screeched, the word cracking from the strength of her yell.
âCome baaaack here, Stacy!â The figure in red drawled, the voice echoing behind her. It sounded... sweet. Enticing. âEverything will just be okay if you turn around and come back to ussss.â
She stumbled for a moment, then shook her head. Just keep going!
âStaaaacy,â the figure called. A beautiful sound... like the peal of a bell wrapping around her. âStaaaacyyyy.â
Stacy took a deep breath. âOne plus one is two!â she gasped out. âOne plus two is three! Two plus three is five! Three plus five is eight!â As long as she listened only to her words, paid attention only to the math needed for them to come out in a timely manner, that voice meant nothing!
And there was the house on the side of the road. Sheâd been running for so long, was so out of breath, that her vision was actually starting to waver and blue. It was a miracle sheâd lasted this long, honestly. Now just... one... last... push! It was right in front of her! Feet away! She just had to open the doorâ
The discordant music came from up above.
She glanced upwards, and saw it waiting there. On the roof of the Iontachsâ house. Perched and waiting with strings already starting to dangle.
It would get her the second she paused to open the door.
But she couldnât stop now. The fog was behind her, the figure in red was behind her. If she hesitated, one of them would get her. But she couldnâtâshe couldnât go to the house. She had to keep running, she had to go somewhere elseâ
And then the upstairs window of the house opened up, and out shotâsomething. She couldnât really see what it was. Or maybe it didnât really process, because it was actually absurd what she saw. A small, green... grabber... thing. With the head... of a dinosaur. It reached out and bit onto the strings dangling above the door and yanked. The discordant music played a few sudden notes, like someone banging on a piano.
The front door opened. âInside! Now!â Framed in the yellow light from inside was Roisin.
Stacy gritted her teeth. With one final scream she ran forward. Roisin stepped to the side. As she approached the door, the small grabber clattered to the ground, the window slammed shut, the music rapidly approached as something fell from aboveâ
And then she made it inside and Roisin slammed the door closed behind her. Something thudded against it, hard, but Roisin quickly locked the door. âInto the livinâ room, now!â she said.
Stacy stumbled to the side into said living room. She set Jack down in the first armchair she saw... and then promptly collapsed on the sofa, gasping for air. Her whole body felt like jelly. Especially her arms and legs, with her arms being practically numb. Her throat was dry, but it also seemed to be coated in thick mucus at the same time. Her body was uncomfortably hot, and her vision was all fuzzy and blurry. Even so, she only rested for a minute before trying to sit up. âOutside... creatures...â
âIâd be surprised if they can get in,â Roisin said. She looked at Stacy, a hard light in her eyes that wasnât there before. âTâis whole town has buildinâs warded against tâese creatures. Or at least... the oldest ones are warded. Which we are in.â
âYes... tâough Iâll admit I donâ know how. Tâose spells date back to the magicians of old. They casted the spells to protect the town ages ago.â
âI... okay... then.â Stacy leaned her head back against the sofa.
Footsteps rushed down the hall. âMom!â âMom!â âMiss Stacy!â
Stacy turned her head and saw Mathew and Larkin rushing towards her. Behind them was Nick, who stopped next to Roisin and looked up at her. Stacyâs sons, meanwhile, stopped right in front of her, staring at her worriedly, hovering like they wanted to get closer but not actually. âAre you... a-are you okay, Mom?â Mathew asked.
âReally tired...â Stacy said, giving them a faint smile. âRan here... but... okay.â
Larkin smiled. âYay!â
âWhat happened? Why did you run back here?â Mathew asked. âThere was that weird fog rolling down the street a-and that thing with the strings was outside the windowâ!â
âDid you two... distract it? With... the little...â Stacy lifted her hand and made a bitey motion, opening and closing it.
âI had a bad dream,â Larkin said. âAnd when I woke up, I looked out the window and saw it! S-so, uh, Mathew remembered there were those things, so I woke up Nick by going into the room for oneâdid we help? Miss Roisin told us she also had a bad dream and that we needed to do something!â
âSo... you put this plan together... once you saw the fog outside?â Stacy asked.
âIndeed,â Roisin confirmed, patting Nickâs head. âIt wasnâ a coincidence that both I and young lad Lark had thâ same dream to wake us up. We... sensed it. Tâat they were cominâ.â
By her side, Nick nodded. And then his eyes wandered. âUm... whoâs that?â
Mathew and Larkin turned to the side. âHoly shit, is that John?!â Mathew gasped.
JohnâJackâs eye was closed, but he opened it at the sound of the question. The green in it had retreated, and it was once again normal blue. He smiled faintly, despite the strange green-black liquid soaking through the bandages, despite the way his hands were still bound tight, despite the knife sticking out of the left side of his collarbone. âYeah... thatâs me,â he said faintly.
âHis real name is Jack,â Stacy said.
Jack started. âYou... you heard that? You... remember that?â
Stacy nodded.
âI... donât know if thatâs a good sign... or a bad sign...â Jack muttered.
âAre you... you?â Stacy asked quietly.
âIâm back... to how I was... a couple hours ago, I think,â Jack said slowly. âItâs... still there. I can still... h-hear it in my head. But... when you stabbed me, it... pushed it back slightly?â He chuckled. âI think it felt the pain and got scared... realizing that it was actually also in danger. Thatâs the price you pay for being physical, bitch.â
âWait... did you say Mom stabbed you?!â Larkinâs eyes went wide.
âIt wasnât really me,â Stacy said quietly. âIt was Ragdoll. Well... it was almost me, but only because they were tricking me. I-I thought...â She shook her head. âNevermind. I-I can tell you all about it later. Right now... I just want to be sure they canât get in.â She turned around in her seat, looking at the window... which was completely covered in white fog.
âNo, none of the ones outside can get in,â Roisin confirmed. âSure, weâll be stuck in here for a bit, but at least weâre all together. Anâ the cityâs been prepared for sometâing like tâis for decades. Evâryone will know not to go outside, and evâryone has food stockpiled.â
Stacy let out a long breath of relief. âGood... thatâs good...â
Larkin frowned, though. His eyes were looking... behind Stacy. And Mathew glanced at Roisin worriedly. âUh... you emphasized âthe ones outside canât get inâ. Does that mean... there are some in here...?â
Roisin nodded. âCanâ be helped bringinâ them in.â She looked at Jack and Stacy. âBut I do hope theyâll be on their best behaveââ
A shadow suddenly moved behind Stacy. She started in surpriseâthen cried out as a heavy weight pressed down on her shoulders. The weight grabbed onto her throat, not making it hard to breathe, but impossible to ignore, and something moved into her field of vision. A... a face. It was upside-down, eyes peering into her own as it leaned over her from behind. Despite being upside-down, tears continued to flow down its cheeks as it stared at her, and dust filled the room, blocking out Stacyâs vision of everything except that face.
She tried to speak, but found it impossible. All she could do was stare at the face of Misery.
Obsession (2026) does a wonderful job at making the audience uncomfortable, because itâs in those moments you can see from Nikkiâs (the real one) perspective, how she doesnât want this and heâs making decisions for her, making her co-dependent and making her love him to the point of self destruction, the scene where she stands still all day, the scene where she hits her head against that bottle, the scene where she hits her head into a brick and threatens to shoot herself. It was either the real Nikki trying to get out and kill herself on her own accord or the entity that was possessing her trying to show her devotion.
The entire movie is just an allegory for SA and taking away someoneâs autonomy for your own selfish desires, Bear will always be the selfish one, the antagonist, the villain or whatever you want to call him, when he didnât save Sarah he was selfish, when he didnât kill Nikki he was selfish, when he tried to kill himself then throw up the pills HE WAS SELFISH. And even then in the end when he does kill himself he leaves Nikki to deal with everything heâs done to her and what heâs made her do.
nikki in Obsession, in both of her forms and how they interact with each other, react to each other etc. are so so accurate to how a traumabond after SA feels.
SA removes your feeling of agency, and that experience manifests as Freaky Nikki. but Original Nikki is still in there desperately trying to regain control, beg for help or death or some sort of mercy. Original Nikki is completely disconnected from her body and powerless. Freaky Nikki is childlike, confused, emotional, desperate and trying to make sense of something that doesn't. trying to make sense of the assault by turning his motivation into love, getting distraught and aggressive when he makes it clear that it isn't. her agency is gone and she feels that she only exists in relation to her assaulter. feeling and acting like she's the problem, because if she is then that means she has some sort of control over the situation.
i dunno i'm rambling and i don't know if i can fully communicate just how deeply this resonated with my experience.

watched obsession a few days ago and have been lurking in the tags ever since and one thing ive not seen mentioned
bear never tells ian sarahs died.
he runs to ians with his second one wish willow after realising he cant have another wish with one thought - get ian to make a wish that contradicts his wish (though we have no evidence to suggest that would work - the customer service rep says the only thing that breaks the spell is death) and he focuses his whole spiel on trying to get ian to make a wish, never once says even "nikkis just killed sarah"
because then hed have to get into why he was meeting up with sarah at 3am alone. why sarahs death was his fault - he knows that, nikki told him that. he doesnt want ian to know that. hes still trying to save face after ones of his friends was brutally murdered because of him
iâm still thinking about obsession and how bears language toward nikki always put himself as the focus. it was never âare you okay?â it was always âYOU are acting crazy. I AM scared. whatâs wrong with YOU?â like no surprise he is victim blaming and i know this is not like perfectly verbatim but it just adds yet another detail of his terrible and awful selfishness (as if the wish itself wasnât enough!)
also that bitch never apologized NOT once. not to nikki. not to sarah. AUGH. heâs the worst.
it's the fact that Bear KNOWS that Nikki doesn't like being called Freaky Nikki, he tells Ian that she's sensitive about it but then proceeds to call her Freaky Nikki anyway. because it's clearly more important to listen to your misogynistic homies than value the feelings of a woman you supposedly love.
The single most horrific thing about Obsession to me is the fact that Nikki literally couldn't do anything about it. She tried to do the right thing initially, have her friend be up front with her about his feelings, and all she could do was trust him at his word when he lied directly to her. And then he went behind her back to, albeit unknowingly, strip her of her autonomy and individuality, everything that made her her, and there was absolutely nothing she could do. She couldn't fight him off, advocate for herself, she wasn't even given the grace to understand what was happening to her or why she's being made to act like this. And when everything goes down and Nikki begs Bear to kill her, the only ask that the real Nikki had made of him since the wish began, he didn't even have the decency to respect the one single fucking thing she had ever asked of him. He has the real Nikki in front of him, speaking to him, like he had wanted the entire time, and he essentially asks "Well what about how I feel about all this? What's so bad about being with me?"
And when he refused her wants and needs once again, there was not a thing she could do.
bear spent his entire screentime (and probably life) not listening to the women around him. literally in the opening scene he dismisses advice given by the waitress helping him on her break!!!! and listens instead to ian, who tells him to call nicky freaky nicky, which we know later she doesnt like.
he doesnt listen to the saleslady when buying a crystal necklace (she suggests citrine and bear decides not to get a crystal necklace full stop) and also she warns him that people come back complaining about the one wish willows (interestingly, the opposite attitude the salesman has when bear comes in after sarah dies) and yet he still makes a wish
he ignores nickys disinterest in dating him (hence the movie) and he ignores her cries for help (countless times, but most prominently when shes screaming over the phone and when shes asking him to kill her just before sarah dies)
the information that nicky thinks of him like a younger brother comes from sarah and he dismisses it
every piece of information or advice that comes to him from a woman is discounted by bear and it results in his death (good riddance), the death of two of his close friends and permanent trauma for nicky

I didnât realize the tagline of Obsession is âbe careful who you wish forâ and I LOVE that double meaning omg. You might interpret it as Bear wishing for the WRONG person before you watch the movie. But really itâs about autonomy: donât make a wish in the stead of someone else, because YOU should not be the one who determines that personâs life. Bear made a wish for (for= in her stead and to have) Nikki, and she suffered the consequences, from no choice or fault of her own. Be careful who you wish for.
been thinking a lot about obsession since i saw it yesterday and one of the things i love about it is that it isnât really a monkeyâs paw story. the problem is not that bearâs wish that nikki love him âmore than anyone in the worldâ is taken too literally or that the universe is out to trick him using genie logic. the problem is that his wish is inherently a selfish one, disregarding nikkiâs agency and personhood to fulfill his own desire. the problem is ALSO his cowardice, unwilling and unable to do anything to reverse the situation until itâs already too late. he doesnât even think to buy another one wish willow until sarah is dead. when he calls the customer care number on the back of the box, heâs determined at first to ALTER the wish - to keep her in love with him, to make her the version of herself that he considers perfect. nikki begs for him to kill her, to release her, and his only response - whatâs so bad about being with me? - is entirely self-focused. and even at the end, he purposefully overdoses and still almost backs out of that decision. if freaky nikki hadnât used her wish right at that moment, bear might have lived, and the real nikki might still have been trapped. this isnât a case of âoops, the wish was taken too literally!â throughout the film, itâs bearâs own intentions and decisions that lead to the filmâs conclusions. had he prioritized nikki over himself at any point, maybe the ending would have been different
