I’m in a masters degree program for clinical mental health counseling, and this is a major topic of conversation. How do we define mentally healthy vs mentally ill? What is the cutoff point for severity of symptoms? Because most disorders — which is defined as a particular collection of symptoms in a recognizable pattern — exist on a spectrum. At what point in that spectrum is someone “normal” vs “sick”?
I was talking to a professor once about feeling ambivalent about having an ADHD diagnosis, and he (the most adult adhd man i have ever known) said, "stars are real. constellations are not."

Do I need to write a unique cover letter for each job application? I'm currently out of work and I find the application process deeply frustrating because I have no idea of the efficacy of tailoring particular applications or if it's even getting in front of a human.
Yes and no. You do need to prepare something specific for each job, but you don't need to write it from scratch every time. The same discussion of how your experience doing x translates into context y works for every job in which there is a context y. So, you can re-use a lot of material.
For kinds of jobs I apply to a lot, I have one 'basic' letter prepared that discusses all the non-specific stuff I'd expect to be present in every One of Those jobs. I usually only write one new paragraph for each job of that kind to which I apply, in which I talk about more specific stuff (and you always want to have the specific job title and company for the relevant position in your cover letter). And I'll always do a quick check through the stated requirements to make sure my letter matches their needs and wording.
For times where I'm applying to a different type of job than one I've applied to before, I will just write a new one from scratch. A letter that doesn't fit the job well won't help you. But that's basically the only time I do that.
One thing that helps is that I'm a very fast writer, which is a skill I intentionally built for (amongst other things) this reason. You certainly shouldn't be spending hours tailoring a cover letter! (although, on the 'viewed by a human' point, I think most of the time people only use AI summaries to make the first cut, not to do the whole process, since they'll have to prep for the interview anyway. If you get to the final round, someone probably will read the thing). It's still onerous, I know, but focusing on speed and accuracy, however that works for you, will make it a whole lot less onerous.

I had the privilege to take some higher level math classes a long time ago when I was in college. And I remember thinking that, at some high level, math seems like philosophy where people are pondering questions just in an effort to understand the world around them, not to to build a bridge or give the change back after selling a candy bar. And then someone told me that the PhD is an acknowledgment that when you go above applied anything, math chemistry physics english spanish art women's studies, you have entered the realm of philosophy. You are pondering, and sometimes answering, existential questions. And it sort of blew my mind.
And this is why universities are still relevant after 900 years or whatever. We know a lot more about the world around us but there are still mysteries of our existence to ponder.

Picked some magnolia petals and discovered as they started to wilt at creases they turned a beautiful warm brown color. Then got the idea to use a silverpoint stylus to scratch a magnolia drawing into the petal~ smells divine
Got the binding done on the blue squares quilt! Now back to quilting.
The green is what I quilted to make sure nothing would shift too bad when I trimmed it all down and bound it so it would stop shedding batting everywhere anytime I worked on it, the whole core still needs all the work

Just in time for Moon Day Monday, I finished my quilt!
I learned many things on this one, including:
- nesting your seams is a thing and it really helps with nice aligned corners, who knew??
- inset circles. Now I fear nothing, including God
- how to use the long arm with a pantograph
- the easy way to change thread on the long arm because the inner blocks were too light for the medium grey thread I was using
- how to stress out my grandfather stopping at various points on the pantograph because I wanted to do something different in the moons and finally
- fun things about free motion quilting, so I could put the correct textures of our beautiful lady into the different phases on the blocks.
The pattern is a mish mash of the Moon Portal quilt pattern by The Water Spirit and the Plaid-ish 2 from Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table quilting, plus some cathedral window blocks for the stars in various sizes.
Today my magnificent octopus magnum opus, a 126-page monograph on the genus Rhombophryne—Madagascar's diamond frogs, was published open access in the journal Vertebrate Zoology. In it, my colleagues and I have described seven new diamond frog species and provided detailed revised accounts of each of the now 27 species in the genus, compiling practically everything that is known about these curious and obscure frogs!
Allow me to introduce the new characters:
This piece of lint precious child is Rhombophryne maraorao, a little burrowing species from the northeast of Madagascar. It is very similar ecologically to R. coudreaui, a long-known species from further south. The name maraorao means ‘rough to the touch’ in Malagasy, referring to the rough skin of this species. They do a weird thing where they straighten all of their limbs and go stiff in self defence. Think pumpkin toadlet post-launch mid-air stiffness, but… in the hand?
This beautiful creature is Rhombophryne mavokely, a little leaflitter-dwelling species from the northeast of Madagascar. The name mavokely is the Malagasy word for ‘pink’ but literally translates as ‘small yellow’ (mavo = yellow, kely = small). I LOVE this bizarre etymology, and also this species is small and sometimes pink and sometimes yellowish, so the name seemed extremely apt. This species was the first Rhombophryne I ever saw alive—I caught the first ever specimen immediately underneath my hammock on Marojejy in 2016!
This shiny boy is Rhombophryne sonaliae, a rather well known species from eastern Madagascar that has previously been called R. alluaudi—until we showed in 2019 that the correct use of that name was for a Plethodontohyla alluaudi from southern Madagascar! We dedicated this species to Sonali Garg, in recognition of her fantastic work especially on Asian frogs.
This forbidden truffle is Rhombophryne anatiala, a very poorly known species very closely related to R. sonaliae but found further north and differing subtly. The name anatiala means ‘in the forest’ in Malagasy, referring to the forest habitat of these frogs.
This bumpy beanbag with his go-faster chevron is Rhombophryne kotrobaratra, an interesting species from northeastern Madagascar with rather unusual anatomy, especially its quite long and strong hindlimbs. The name kotrobaratra means ‘thunder and lightning’ in Malagasy, and refers to the inclement weather that seems to bring these frogs out (true for all Rhombophryne, really) .
This coffee bean is Rhombophryne quentini, an orange-thighed species from high-elevation forests in northern Madagascar that resembles R. ellae. Back in 2020 I named R. ellae after my partner, Ella, and I thus took particularly great pleasure in naming this new, closely related species after our four-and-a-half year-old son, Quentin. A little family of frogs. :3
This little pebble is Rhombophryne kilonjy, a small, poorly known and obscure species related to R. ellae and R. quentini but found in lowland forest close to the coast in northwestern Madagascar. The name kilonjy means ‘pebble’ in Malagasy because, well, just look at it.
Even way back in my tumblr posts from 2013 and 2014 I think you would find mentions of the work I had begun on this monograph. I had no notion that it would take more than twelve years to complete. But I cannot express my joy at finally being able to share these charming, round frogs with the world. I hope you approve of the names!

this was submitted as a one sentence horror story, but it feels like it could be an old jewish joke, like the one about the two rabbis proving g-d doesn't exist or the saying 'people plan, g-d laughs'
Even more, it sounds like the beginning -- the set-up -- of the joke. Can’t you hear Carl Reiner opening a bit with this line, or Shalom Aleichem using it to kick off a story?
Well I'm not quite an old Jewish man just yet, but let me give it a shot...
Losing confidence in Himself, G-d became an atheist. He decided to go down to Earth, to walk among humans and see how they found meaning.
He wandered the world until he came to a town, where he happened upon a pastor. "Come to our church this Sunday!" said the pastor. But G-d shook his head. "I don't believe in G-d anymore," he told the pastor sullenly. "And besides, I really shouldn't be working weekends." . . .
He continued wandering, and as night fell, he realized he had no money for a hotel. Walking down the darkening sidewalk, he passed many shivering folk, some young and thin, others old and worn and grizzle-bearded, looking not unlike himself. Just as the rain began to fall, he happened upon a priest. The priest looked him up and down, and said, "You look cold, my son. We're hosting a men's shelter at the church tonight; you can sleep there, and come to Mass tomorrow." This time G-d agreed. He slept well and was warm, and in the morning sat for Mass. They blessed him in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but he felt beside himself and decided to leave.
By this time G-d was quite hungry. He stopped by a deli, but still had no money, so all he could do was watch the fresh steaming bagels be made. On a bench outside the deli, a man was eating a bagel with lox. As he finished eating, G-d noticed there were still some scraps of food on the waxpaper. Unable to help himself, he asked if he could have the scraps, before the man threw it away. "Please sir, I'm so hungry. I'd just like that crumb of bagel there, and that little shred of lox. I think I could make a bisl of fish last quite a while." The man shook his head. "I cannot in good conscience give you my trash," he said, "But come inside, I'll get you your own bagel. I'd offer to get you coffee—but that's trash too."
So the man bought G-d some breakfast and sat with him on the bench. "Thank you so much," said G-d. "How can I ever repay you?" But the man just shrugged and said, "I'm a rabbi. Buying bagels I don't get to eat is part of the job description."
G-d thanked the rabbi again, and ate in silence. "Rabbi, can I ask you a question? I feel I haven't been on this Earth too long, but already I've seen much misery. How do you do it? How do you still believe in G-d?"
The rabbi pondered this. "I believe in joyful things. I believe in kindness, and people choosing to help each other. And isn't that a kind of godliness?" (G-d suspected there was a bit more to godliness than that, but he let it slide.) The rabbi continued: "I've prayed to G-d every day for the last 30 years, and I will every day til I die. And if He answers my prayers, all the better! But tell me, my new friend, what's your name?" G-d hesitated and said, "It's a little hard to pronounce..." The rabbi chuckled and said, "No matter. Say, it won't be anything like Shabbos dinner, but my wife is baking a delightful fig pie today, and I'd like to have you over for dinner to enjoy it." G-d nodded. "I do like figs..."
That evening, G-d sat for dinner with the rabbi, the rabbi's wife, and their four children. The meal was delicious, the rabbi's family was incredibly welcoming. Their conversation was friendly but never prying, and the children laughed and played with each other. Several times, the youngest child tugged on G-d's sleeve for his attention before her father motioned for her to go play with her siblings. G-d began to see what the rabbi had meant about the joyfulness of life.
At the end of the night, G-d stood up to leave, and felt renewed. The rabbi said, "My friend, don't leave us so soon!" And G-d replied, "I will always be with you, for I am the Lord Your G-d." And they understood it to be true.
He had done this sort of thing a few times before and generally knew how it went. As expected, the rabbi and his family fell to their knees, weeping with joy and awe. He did not expect the youngest child to walk right up and tug G-d's sleeve again. He smiled graciously down at her, and she looked up with the wonderful bright eyes of a child who understands nothing but the urge to play. In a high voice, she said, "Knock knock!" G-d couldn't help but laugh. "Who's there?" He replied cheerfully.
Suddenly from across the room, the rabbi swore loudly and rudely. Dismayed, G-d asked, "What troubles you?" He saw the rabbi was trembling, half in rage and half in embarrassment. "I'm sorry Lord! Thank you for this, thank you so much for gracing us with your light, Baruch Atah and so on, it's just..." The rabbi swore again. "Thirty years of daily prayer, Lord, and a KNOCK-KNOCK JOKE is what you'll answer?"
