Fallen London is like what if a piece of the most wonderful beautiful world ever dreamt up (by the biggest names in interactive fiction, no less) was just hidden behind this button you must press 16 times. And after that there will be a button you must press 17 times. And after that
I imagine it'd be different depending on what social class/faction you'd be talking to.
I don't know enough about Victorian etiquette to say how the average person would ask. For the factions, however, I have lots of ideas.
For high Society functions, there could be a servant with a copy of Slowcake's available if someone wants to know another's pronouns before making a formal introduction. Otherwise they could introduce themselves first, slipping their own pronouns in with their titles/achievements ("They who won the annual fencing tournament three years in a row."), then expect the other to do the same.
Agents of the Great Game almost never ask for pronouns. They already had one of their spies find out in advance. Briefcases are left at dead drops with with gender dossiers of notable people in the Neath.
Bohemians would probably ask directly. "How shall I refer to you in my prose?", "What are your pronouns? I need to begin writing a critique on your work immediately!", etc.
Devils would ask in a flowery yet sinister way. "And what is the color of your soul?" or something like that.
Tomb-Colonists could literally wear their gender on their sleeve, writing their pronouns on their bandages. If they have a flair for the dramatic, they could even write what would've been on their obituary ("She was a loving mother..." "It is survived by..." etc.)
I think having "Nightmares" encompass all psychological troubles is an interesting and honestly pretty fitting decision for the game, given the time period. With Freud being on his peak nonsense at the time, ascribing lots and lots of meaning to dreams was becoming fashionable, and there's a certain elegance to considering yourself to be Plagued By Dread Visions! instead of just...coming apart at the seams from the stress of it all. You're losing sleep because of the nightmares, not because of the things that caused them and their effects on you. You're mumbling to yourself and jumping at shadows because of the lost sleep, not because of that other stuff. Just get somebody or take something to fix the dreams, that's the trick! Nothing you have to acknowledge. Nothing unseemly, and nothing outside of your control. It's so very Victorian. It's sad, in a way, when you see it as an attempt to apply a cultural attitude of denial and carefully constructed (performative) self-mastery - that already didn't work well for the real time period it came from, mind you - to life in a cave that kills and traps you and is filled with horrors both beyond, and unfortunately well within, your comprehension.

Behold, my closet cosplay of the Sapphir’d King for the @failbettergames cosplay competition!
I love the Judgements as antagonists and symbols in the lore. (I also love astronomy, so maybe I was predisposed to like a certain character). In my imagination, they’re like classical mythology gods, able to manifest in many ways, from humanoid avatars with a fraction of full presence to deadly true forms of light. Here is an example of what one such avatar may wear. :)
It was so fun to put together a themed outfit. The accessories for this piece fell together perfectly: the sun pin, the skull ring, the mask, the crown, the gemstones. Blue and bright.
(And yes, the limp wrist is intentional, and no, I will not elaborate.)
this is like my fourth batch, but i haven't posted any of the previous ones, so let me show off some of the cards from all the batches!
briar and his three mr stoneses! these are the face commanders of the deck. there are alternate commanders that you'll see later, but this is the pair that i like using the most often.
more masters! (and bazaar-aligned entities). all the masters in the deck are vampires, and they also all have the seal of the bazaar as a watermark. just a neat bit of visual clarity, i think!
ocs! incuding mine. not all of them will be able to make it into the deck proper (for deck size and colour identity reasons) but i'm still so happy to have them all.
basic lands: seven of each. these gave me so much hassle back when i made them, but i think they turned out well!!! apart from the edge mountains which are like 70% black.
more lands! a triplet of creatureland which i feel work very well. the rest of them are neat too. whenever i say i have an underground sea proxy in the deck, people give me a Look, but how could i not! it's a perfect fit.
dfcs! the frames of these all had to be done by hand, which always took a while. i still think they turned out incredibly well, all things considered.
more creatures!! some legendary, some not. i made the decision pretty early that if i represent a named character with a nonlegendary card, i'd just cut the "the" from the name (see sallow spirifer and voracious diplomat). i think it works!
and noncreatures!! there's a vague treasure theme in the deck (as can be seen in the fall of london, revel in riches and spirifage (as well as a lot of the creatures)) but honestly most of the cards are flavour picks. still, artificial evolution has gotten me out of some jams. fun card!
aaaand tokens! which is everything. i reckon when i play this deck properly, i'll report back any fun scrapes that anyone's characters get into. like getting turned into a bug, or killing the god of death.
