That Little Soy Thing

You know what. There ARE less animals around than there used to be. Like. Less than five years ago there were dozens of herons in the rivers by the train tracks. There were wild hogs and deer in the nearby forest. When you were out late in summer you could see hares and owls. I have several fond memories of staying out at night in my late teens and seeing swarms of fireflies. There were frogs, salamanders, occasional lizards if you were lucky. There were so many fucking foxes. And like... I've gone on several evening/night walks in the woods this summer and I haven't seen a single firefly, or heard the call of an owl. There's no hares, no foxes. I haven't seen a fieldfare or a nightingale in years. Biodiversity is dying out completely.

But nobody wants to talk about how the biggest driver of global biodiversity loss is animal agriculture....

Truly unintended side effect of being a vegan for this long is how I see non-domestic animals. Like if the pigs don't have to die, then this bug on my leg doesn't either. I can't (and shouldn't) prevent all animal deaths ever, but there were so many more deaths that I could prevent than I realized.

in light of billie eilish’s “hot take” about veganism, I’d just like to say I am so sick and tired of non-indigenous people using our communities and practices as an excuse, to hide behind their own shame when really they don’t give a shit about indigenous peoples. they don’t talk about us in any other aspect besides this one and it’s only to cover their own backs. indigenous communities that have to hunt for their own food for survival is very different than going into a supermarket and buying packaged meat. these communities have quotas, they use every part of the animal, and they are responsible for taking care of most of our ecosystem. any good, intersectional vegan knows this and understands that it would be very colonial of them to go into these spaces and try and change that. saying this, there are a lot of indigenous people who are vegans and they are largely ignored because it doesn’t fit their narrative of the “noble savage” which is also a racist view of indigenous people.

more leftists should be vegan. veganism and leftism operate on the same beliefs. social justice, no exploitation of labor, autonomy, environmental concern, intersectionality, an equal and just living etc. leftist praxis should include veganism

oh you can't go vegan because you love food? you see, that's not something vegans can relate to, because vegans don't like food. in fact, in my culture we hate food. we never eat and we actually think that eating is disgusting and offensive. unlike you, with your unique experience of "loving food" that prevents you from going vegan.
