Befriending you:

Fortunately for you, pretty much everybody in the Guardians are a bit awkward, especially around newcomers.

Despite being the least friendly, Rocket actually makes it the easiest for you to feel at home with everyone.

He is never bothered by your enthusiasm when you’re excited - it makes him realize that things in life are still worth getting excited about. You make him see things in a new light.

And you both have fun making fun of people. By now, everyone knows you are loving and you don’t mean anything by it.

Falling for you:

Once Rocket realizes he has feelings for you, he expresses it childishly, at first, because he doesn’t know what to do with these feelings.

Your glasses often go missing, for example, and it’s his fault every time.

But he also starts paying more attention to you when you seem uncertain about yourself or what to do. He tries to be encouraging, but, given his rough nature, he sometimes comes across as a P.E. coach instead of comforting. He still says nice things, it’s just disguised as tough guy talk until he knows how to be more intimate. “You’ve made plenty of good decisions, before. You don’t need to doubt yourself now.” “Don’t just say what you think will make everyone else happy! What do you want?” “The only thing annoying about you is that you think you’re annoying! And that’s not even very annoying so don’t get any wrong ideas in your head!”

Since he realizes that you can be insecure, sometimes, he can be a bit overprotective when the group is arguing - always taking your side or insulting anyone who disagrees with you. It’s not that you necessarily need to be protected from regular conversation, but he doesn’t want to risk your feelings getting hurt by anyone.

He also becomes more nosy. He’s always sticking himself into your business, whether it’s you, trying to shop for something, or trying to write or draw. He wants to know what’s on your mind and he’s always secretly hoping that it’s him. You can bet that if you drew a picture of him, his heart would pick up and his ears would flatten. But he’d try to either laugh it off, tease you about it, or he’d show off to everyone else how good he looks in your drawing.

Cuddling probably starts before you two establish that you are a couple, because feeling safe and comfortable around someone is so important to him. It’s hard for him to relax with other people around, especially if someone is touching him. The fact that he likes you and feels comfortable to be in your space or for you to be in his is everything to him. Cuddling becomes one of his favourite intimate things to do with you because of this.
