I think if you understand TADC as a deeply personal and direct story centering on transness, emotional/self repression, the inner complexity of cruel people, ego, control, self-destructive tendencies, second chances, and what it means to live a meaningful life, all filtered through the core vision of one person, you'll find a raw expression of all those things, an experience being shared. You'll find a story that is consistent in its theme, subject matter, and quality throughout. Not something impossibly esoteric or flawlessly sophisticated, but a story that puts every piece it needs to into place. A story that completes itself, that says what it needs to and leaves a mark after it does.

Conversely, if you understand TADC as a story to take every single aspect, moment, outcome, and detail totally literally rather than in tandem with the thematic signficance it communicates. Or were looking for a more lore-driven story. Or were hoping for a more rounded exploration of its world and characters, a hollistic dive into the premise it sets up rather than a story barreling towards a specific end goal/a very pointed thematic stance. You're gonna end up disappointed with what you got.

And this is not a moral judgement, I don't think any expectation is at all more correct than another. I actually think my last point is probably even the most fair stance to have. Especially if you don't engage with any secondary material and just look at the show itself, since it doesn't totally establish Jax as a core focus until later in its run. Some storylines do feel very sidelined.

But if you view the show for what it was meant to be rather than what it was expected to be, I personally think it was rather beautiful. Not perfect, not the pinnacle of cinema, but as a trans woman, it was meaningful to me, dearly so. I feel like the standards its being held to aren't totally reasonable. I think it's a story that deserved to be told as it is, I think it's human.

I would just like to analize something really interesting about jax in ep 9 so spoilers below!

I think its fascinating that jax is shown to turn into an accual asshole only after her "coming out" to ribbit, before it were shown that yes she always had that jerk characteristic, calling ribbit names, being pretty rugged but it used to be alot more wholsome and soft, the name calling was friendly, they had fun with it, all the memories jax has are good and shes overall a sweet-jerk, raggata even states they used to be good friends before ribbit abstracted...or more so before jax came out to her, I think it says alot about jax and the circus, she was in an environment she felt safe at and on her own she wasn't a bad person. She was good

she was authentic with her friendship with ribbit and kaufmo and everyone else because she wasn't masking or at least was in a minimal way, even the coming out scene itself, it felt like a natural progression of her friendship with ribbit, she felt safe enough to let her walls come down completly, she was extremley vornouble and showed her whole true self to her, and how did ribbit respond? By accepting her, by giving her her bowtie her only piece of clothing and looking her in the eyes, as an equal, as a friend, friend who loved her so much.

Then kaufmo knocked on the door, and i can't help but feel like jax's reaction wasn't to kaufmo specificly, it was to someone on the outside, someone unknown from the outside, the outside, the "third party".

maybe even it reminded her of her mother? I know knocking is one of those distressing sounds esp if you live with someone abusive, the sound sticks to them, but even if it wasn't, i think that night jax started masking to the max and became the awful jerk she was through the series, she pushed ribbits acceptance and all her friendships away to protect herself...but it was to protect herself to someone who wasn't there.

the idea that wasn't there, the person knocking was implemented to be her second closest friend, there was no danger there and if anyone else knocked there still woudn't be danger as ragatha is overly loving, kinger is zany but loving too, it would be illogical for cained to be in any form bigoted he's an AI, the idea of hatered, of rejection and of being laughed at was all in her head, stuck to her from long before, shes been hurt before so much the memory or imagining of it was enough to push her to become the bad person she was through the series, she ran from love, ruined her friendships, her self-worth, her worldview running from something that coudn't reach her.

she started to assume hatered was the normal expected way and any acceptance & such were just lucky mirackles, something rare, yet she was sorrounded by it the whole time, the only person not embracing it, was herself.

I just think its fascinating how hard her own thoughts and masking and assumptions and fear have hurt her, not to mention ribbit.

Its a cautionary tale.
