not only did our families live through the horror that was the ussr but now we gotta be reminded of that shit constantly in the community that we're supposed to share as queer people

not to mention that the ussr wasnt even communist it was just fascist. why are u communists using the symbols of fascists. it just looks like ur idolizing a fascist state.

It was an operation performed by our police which involved creating a massive database of queer people, they would track those people down, force them to sign documents, provide fingerprints, make confessions, denounce their partners or colleagues.

And then the constant struggle of placing ppl with housing. Our county no longer has section 8 and like getting into a long term placement is easily a years (plural) long wait. SSI is also so hard to get approved for mental health disabilities it gives me a headache every time I try to wrangle with our own SSI outreach ppl and to write adequate notes even tho I know they are also trying their best to get ppl approved. And then when you are finally approved, the federal amount you get is still so insanely low compared to the local cost of living.

I also lost some clts who I was in the middle of trauma work with due to sudden Medicaid change in my state based on immigration status. Or ppl for fear of ICE abusing their medical insurance info and just stopped showing up.

I hate this country.

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
