30s|Bi/Queer|She/Her|🇨🇦 This was supposed to be my writing blog... But let's face it, this is 90% devoted to LGBTQ* comics/shows now. Some writing, some ranting, mostly fangirling over "Check, Please!" lol Current obsession: "Demon of the Underground" and "The Untamed" 🏒I love the Winnipeg Jets🏒 Fuck terfs.
Ilya recognized the yellow-striped beach towel that Shane had declared to be 'Ilya's towel' at the start of the summer and placed his camera case on top of the hoodie that was paired with it. "Race into the water?"
Shane watched Ilya sprint down the length of the dock while he instead took a few steps into the water from the shoreline. "I win!" He shouted, and Ilya turned right as he reached the end of dock, toppling in sideways.
"No way!" Ilya was indignant when his head emerged, sputtering from the water and he saw Shane only ankle-deep in water. "You're cheating again."
"You said in the water. I'm in the water."
"The race was for our whole bodies off the dock."
Shane laughed as he waded further in. "That's not what you said. You just said you'd race me into the water. I stepped in first, so I win."
Ilya shook his head as he swam closer towards Shane, muttering something in Russian as he neared. Shane assumed Ilya was swearing at him, but he was smiling as he did so, at least.
"What are you saying?"
"I am saying you are asshole who bullies poor refugees who don't speak your stupid language perfectly."
Shane grinned. "You think English is stupid?"
"So stupid!" Ilya stood up where the water reached about to his ribs and let Shane wade in the rest of the distance. "All the extra little words for no reason. I cannot say 'I saw cat' even though that is true. I have to say 'I saw a cat'. Then when I say 'I ate a apple' this is still wrong because 'an apple' is the right way apparently."
"This rant seems long overdue."
"I should be allowed to say 'I saw cat' or 'I ate apple' or 'I fucked Shane Hollander' but..."
"That last one is technically fine."
Ilya wrapped his arms around Shane's neck. "No, you're wrong. How embarrassing now I'm correcting your first language." He squirmed when Shane playfully pinched him. "Correct way is 'I fucked THE Shane Hollander'. One and only."
Shane kissed him and made a pleased little noise when Ilya wrapped his legs around Shane's waist below the surface. "Want to know what I think about that?"
"Yes."
"...None of that changes the fact that I beat you into the water."
"I hate you," Ilya said as Shane started laughing. "Stop laughing, you cheater! I am saying I hate you!"
"No you don't." Shane placed a kiss on Ilya's jaw.
Ilya sighed. "No, I don't. Not even little bit."
"But you still hate English?" Shane teased him.
"Yes, but I will keep studying stupid extra words and nonsense spelling-- ugh, the spelling! Spelling is actually worst part."
"Even native speakers would agree with you on that one."
Ilya groaned dramatically as the floated into water just deep enough that their feet couldn't touch the bottom. "If everyone agrees, then change it!"
"Wait 'til you see the old stuff, like Shakespeare."
"I refuse. I am already learning whole rest of English for you. I won't learn old words too."
"For me, eh?"
"Yes. Of course for you." Ilya's annoyed act started to crack when Shane started smiling like a dork. "For who else?"

1) do this even if you're under 40. seriously. I definitely should have been doing something like this for years and I only turned 40 a month and a half ago
2) if you're like me just now trying this going "oh god i've only done 15 and i think my hands are cramping" start lower than 30 and increase by 5 once whatever number you're doing no longer makes your hand cramp up. I can manage about 15 per exercise at the moment.
If you do a lot of GRASPING make sure you do the SPREADING WIDE counterstretch. Whenever I crochet or handwrite for a long time I gotta do that one frequently
I like to think about how Ilya came off all smooth and confident and sexy in his towel with his cocky "I might knock" and tiny shrug and smirk, sauntering away like it's no fuckin thing when I know on the inside he's like oh my god oh my GOD it worked okay it's happening it worked oh my god okay okay okay be cool holy fuckingg
just so we’re clear if you’ve never actually seen a cybertruck in person and have only seen photos of them i cannot stress enough how much worse they look in real life. like i honestly don’t know how it’s possible. most things look basically the same in pictures and in real life. but as stupid and ugly as cybertrucks look in photos, every person i’ve spoken to who has seen one in real life agrees that they somehow look even worse in person. and i know you’re thinking to yourself “tah they already look so bad in photos, how can they possibly look even worse in person?” I DONT KNOW. the first time i saw one on the road i was on a phone call and i literally cut myself off in the middle of a sentence just to be like “oh my GOD.” just an incredibly, laughably, unbelievably bad vehicle. i’ve never experienced anything like it. they’re just so bad

OTHER CHARACTERS: Hayden Pike, JJ, Cliff Marlow(Marleau), Connors, Drapeau, Coach Wiebe, Yuna Hollander, David Hollander, Svetlana Vetrova

SUMMARY: Ilya Rozanov, rising star of the Soviet Union's infamous Red Army team shocked the world in 1989 when he suddenly defected to Canada to play for a mediocre MLH team.
Shane Hollander, underappreciated and deeply closeted third-liner on said team, was perhaps the most shocked of everyone. The cocky Russian phenom hadn't made the best impression on Shane during a brawl at World Juniors a couple years prior, but when a noticeably sullen Ilya arrived in their locker room, Shane couldn't help but reach out to him.
EXCERPT (ch4) :
There was a knock at Shane's door and he stretched the phone cord as far as it would go to answer it. Ilya stood in the doorway at first without coming inside. "Are you ready? The shop closes in two hours."
"You do not need two hours to pick out a movie."
"You know this for sure?"
"I know that if you take two hours to pick a movie I'm fucking leaving you there."
Ilya walked inside and Shane closed the door behind him. "Then I will drive us and hold my car keys very tight the whole time in store."
"I bet I could figure out how to hotwire your stupid car in less than two hours."
"Then let's go. The sooner we go, the more time you have to try."
"I'm on the phone!"
Ilya toed off his shoes and walked towards the living room. "Then why do you spend so much time arguing with me? Very rude, Shane."
"Oh my god, shut up..." Shane groaned as he lifted the phone back up to his ear. "No, mom. I was talking to Ilya... I don't actually know how to hotwire a car... Yes, the MLH pays me just fine. No, we were just--"
"Is that your mother?"
"Yes, I'm talking to my mom," Shane answered him with one hand covering the transmitter. "What? No!... Mom!... Why?"
"Can I talk to your mother?" Ilya asked him.
At the same time, Shane turned to him and said, "She wants to talk to-- What? No. You want to?"
"Of course! Where is other phone? Your bedroom?"
Shane's eyes went wide. "Take this one. You're not allowed in my bedroom." He handed off the living room phone to Ilya and darted off toward his bedroom.
"We share hotel rooms all the time! These are basically bedrooms. Same thing!" Ilya called after him.
"Not the same thing!" Shane called back to him.
Ilya grinned and put the phone to his ear. "Hello, Shane's mother. This is Ilya Rozanov."
Yuna's voice sounded cheerful on the other end of the line. "Ilya! It's so nice to finally meet you."
"It is nice to meet you too. You should come visit. Shane has wedding photo of you and your husband on bookshelf. You are both a beautiful couple. I know where Shane gets his good looks."
Shane picked up the other phone at that moment to the sound of his mom's flattered laughter. "What weird stuff are you saying to her?"
"It's a compliment, Shane. I am being charming."
"I regret teaching you that word."
"Do you hear this? The way your son speaks to me? I come all the way to Canada and he bullies me every day."
"Oh my god, stop. Okay mom, you've met Ilya now. I'll call you tomorrow, okay? Please hang up."
"Shane, don't be rude," Yuna scolded him. "Oh, honey! Pick up the other phone. I'm talking to Ilya Rozanov!"
"What? I'm already on the other--" Shane started to say when he was interrupted by another voice on the line.
"Hello!" Shane's dad greeted cheerfully.
"This is actually a nightmare..." Shane muttered as he took a few steps into his hallway, which was as far as the cord in his bedroom would allow. It was enough to lock eyes on Ilya. "Behave," he told him.
"So, Ilya! How are you liking Canada so far?" David asked.
"It is very nice. I ate bananas in wintertime."
"Oh?"
"We have been asking Shane about you for months," Yuna began. "We were both so excited when you joined the team. Did you know that the first hockey game Shane ever went to was the 1972 Summit Series game in Montréal?"
Ilya's face lit up. "Really? First game my mother ever brought me was game five in Moscow!"
"What? Really?" Shane looked over at him. "In 1972?"
"I don't remember it, but yes."
"That Kharlamov was just so talented! I know we were cheering for Canada, but he was incredible to watch."
"Tretiak, too. He was one hell of a goalie," David added.
"My dad used to be a goalie," Shane explained to Ilya. "Anyway, we should let you go. We're renting a movie tonight and the store closes in an hour and a half. It's apparently going to take him two hours to pick something because Ilya loves to inconvenience teenagers who make $4.70 per hour."
"What?! It's a lie! I am very nice to teenagers at the video store. I am sorry this is how you learn your son is a liar. You should come visit. If Shane does not let you, you can stay at my apartment. It is very big. I will sleep on couch."
"Oh my god!" Shane groaned and hung up the phone in his bedroom. He tackled Ilya to the couch and wrestled the phone from his hand. "Okay, goodbye mom, goodbye dad! You're always welcome to visit, just let me know. If not, I'll at least see you in the summer. Love you, bye!"
Ilya laughed as Shane clambered over him to hang up the phone. "So rude!"
"Fuck you." Shane laughed. "You're a menace!"
"You love it."
"I fucking don't," Shane insisted, but it wasn't fooling anybody. He pushed off and stood up from the couch. "Okay, are you ready to go? Or do you not want to rent a movie anymore?"
Ilya sprung to his feet. "No, I want. Let's go. I will be so quick, grab first movie I see."
Shane chuckled. "Please don't. Last time you tried picking a random movie you ended up with Friday the 13th and it scared the hell out of you."

“Shane Hollander.”
“What?”
“Privet. Hello.”
“Oh.” Shane’s pronunciation hadn’t been remotely close. “And what about…?” He pointed to the Russian phrase he’d overly-ambitiously tried first.
“Dobroye utro.”
“Ah. Good morning,” Shane said sheepishly.
