i thought i'd want to see something worse than hungarians reacting to the election so i checked what english speaking twitter's got to say about it and it's almost all let's kick em out of eu or let's kick em out of eu and replace them with ukraine and it's always fun to see how westerner 'allies' see eastern europe: deserving of only shit for having to live in a shit system that they got the comfortable end of, they see as a charity case at best and would gladly push us under the bus if we don't smile, behave and pull ourselves up by the bootstraps
i cried reading comments under some westerns articles.
"they deserve it" you don't know ANYTHING about living in a country with no press freedom. you don't know anything about the legacy of soviet meddling, habsburg meddling, deep poverty, a country where alcoholism is the norm, where people are prisoners of the unspoken trauma of the 20th-century. my aunt committed suicide seeing the results. she was born under soviet occupation, she has lived 12 years already under this new regime. she is in hospital, she is poor and troubled, but the westerners from their stable homes, with their press freedom and buildings that don't fall apart they should ashamed of themselves.
Had a similar discussion on Reddit and it’s easier to copy my opinion than typing it again, so apologies:
not to mention the vested interest western europe has in keeping orbán in power, and the passivity the european parliament has shown towards him, sure they condemn his actions in the media but they have done nothing because fidesz staying in power is beneficial to them. if westerners actually cared about whats going on here they would start action in their own countries/urge the eu towards action and not shit on the people barely getting by in a bad situation
What they say: I am loving Our Flag Means Death!
What they mean: Yes I am screaming crying throwing up but what other words do I have about watching a Latine nonbinary character on my TV not only being called by their correct pronouns but by the name they chose by basically everyone (and Nana as the exception, someone who wants to recognise Jim but is caught in old habits is ALSO important), this is a show where the queer is not subtext but text, it’s flashing neon signage with a song from THE Fleetwood Mac “fucked up relationships” album playing while one lost soul physically reaches out to touch the man he loves, this is a show that is using the most beloved romance tropes as a shopping list, it saw we were hungry and offered a buffet for the heart, and all the while that I’m leaning forward, repeating lines in the sotto voice of joyful disbelief there is a part of me is both so angry this sort of story is rare and so grateful this show is acting like this is a normal story to tell.
I can't believe Taika Waititi made all the vampires gay, and now he's making all the pirates gay. literally no one else is doing it like him.
Why You Should Absolutely Be Watching Our Flag Means Death
Look, I thought this was just going to be a silly little pirate sitcom that I could sit down and binge and move on with my life. But seriously, it’s SO good!
Now, if you haven’t heard of the show, let me start with the basics.
This is Stede.
He used to be a fancy foppish aristocrat.
Then he left his wife and children to become a pirate.
Well, a Gentleman Pirate.
But he’s not really cut out for it and things go south.
Fast.
Enter Blackbeard!
(pause to admire the wigmaker who crafted his glorious beard…. and we’re back)
Blackbeard has heard all about Stede and, quite frankly, he’s fascinated. What the hell is a guy like this doing on a pirate ship?
But the thing is, Blackbeard has been in a bit of a rut himself, and he’s ready to try something new, so they work out a bit of a deal.
Ed will teach Stede how to be a better pirate
And Stede will teach Blackbeard how to be a gentleman.
Now, I know what you’re probably thinking.
Gee, this sounds like a silly little pirate show. Maybe I’ll get around to it eventually.
Or maybe you’ve watched the first couple episodes and thought, “Eh, it’s alright. Kind of funny, but I’ve got limited time here and I’ve got a lot of other stuff to watch.”
But the thing is, this is SO much more than just a silly pirate show. It has hands down the best acting I have ever seen from Taika Watiti. He and Rhys play off each other with the silliness very well, but they also dive into some deep emotional stuff that is just phenomenal.
Oh, and did I mention that this wasn’t a comedy? It’s actually a Rom-Com between Stede and Blackbeard.
And no, it’s not subtext. It’s very much text.
Like… Literally. The show’s creator (David Jenkins) has spent the last 3 weeks in every interview ever being like, “Hey, did you know that gay pirate marriage is a thing that existed? In actual history? Like they had a word for it and everything. Have you heard about this? If not, you should definitely hear about this, because this is a thing that 100% exists and is absolutely historical and you should all definitely know about for no particular reason.”
Anyway, I won’t spoil anything specific from the episodes because it’s all so wonderfully done, but… yeah. The creator ships it hard and he is fucking delivering with every new episode.
And that’s not even getting into any of the wonderful side stories with the crew!
There are multiple queer couples/romances there. Two of the characters create the first ever pyramid scheme. There’s a non-binary character with a amazing backstory and side quest. There’s roommate shenanigans, and… well, just all types of shenanigans really…
The point is, this is seriously an amazing show and I highly highly encourage anyone who is not already on board to join in with the fun.
EDIT: For those wondering where to watch the show, click here to see my second post about that.

okay but imagine andrew’s peter goes back to his universe and immediately goes to visit gwen’s grave. he sits and talks to her for awhile, telling her that he made two new friend in one day— a record for him— then goes on and on about interdimensional travel and how her mind would be blown away by what he discovered. but then he says “you know, i was wrong. i was wrong, gwen. i always thought you would have wanted me to keep pushing— to keep being the friendly neighborhood spiderman and help people that don’t have anyone else there to help them. but i know now that you probably would have wanted me to be happy and forgive myself for what happened. to let you go and move on. to be peter parker. i said that i would never forgive myself for what happened, and honestly? i don’t know if i ever will, gwen. but i can try. i can try for you. so today i’m going to walk out of here and i’m going to try to be the peter parker you always thought i could be, not just the spiderman you knew i could be. i just— i just miss you a lot and i wish you were here to see that person.” then he leaves on his skateboard, accidentally running over a random guy around his age. the man yells at him a lot and peter profusely apologizes, offering to buy him a coffee to make up for running him over. the man agrees, but as he says his name so the barista can write it on his coffee, peter’s heart stops. his name is mj.
Tom Felton and Emma Watson in Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts
beautiful take on grief by Andrew Garfield
What do you remember about your first Comic-Con, when you came out of the audience wearing the Spider-Man costume and read that note you’d written? I remember it vividly. It was one of my favorite moments of my creative life, in terms of finding a purpose in my life and knowing that I was in the right place and the right time and that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Where the idea came from is that I wanted to mark it for myself: I didn’t want to do just a panel, I didn’t want it to be, “Here’s the actors talking about the film,” because that creates a separation and a literal status level, because the actors are on a higher level on the stage than the people are in the audience, and I’m not comfortable with that. It’s okay when you see a play because it’s elevated reality or whatever, but to have the Comic-Con audience look up at me … that simple action, I wasn’t comfortable with. I wanted to be in the crowd, that was it. That’s where I belong, because I’m a fan. It also came out of being very anxious about saying hello and having to say, “Hey, guys, I hope you don’t mind that I’m English.” — Andrew Garfield | San Diego Comic-Con 2011
