tragedy enjoyers when the tragedy is tragic ^-^
Marvelous.
Current Tanith Lee shelves - I'll need to start a third soon!
Fuck The Sandman by Neil Gaiman
Look at Tales From the Flat Earth by Tanith Lee
The entire Flat Earth series is available in e-book form from Astra Publishing and physical reprints are planned. If people actually pay for her currently available work, the more likely it will be that more of her work gets reprinted.
You can also check Thriftbooks for reasonably priced physical copies. I know at least that Night's Master and Death's Master were reprinted as mass market paperbacks in the last 10-15 years or so. I'd opt for the three-in-one hardback (it contains Night's Master, Death's Master and Delusion's Master) if you've got the money to spare.
[Edit: It looks like Delusion's Master was also reprinted at the same time as the first two so it's not very difficult at all to find copies of her work.]
Maybe itās just me, but. When Iām reading something and am just flat-out enjoying it, like filled to the brim with glee at the authorās wording or characterization or imagination or ingenuity or pacing, I stop reading. I am so full of excitement and love that I have to stop wherever I am and pace around or do somethingĀ because Words Are So Damn Cool I need to expend some energy or Iāll explode.
Thereās a decent chance that the author did the same thing, which also makes me happy.
going from All That to tanith lee was a mistake.

Is that Lylas from Tales from the Flat Earth
IT MOST CERTAINLY IS
can't fully express how much i love her she is SUCH a mess and she's so funny about it.
And honestly one of the best things about Lylas is how consistently she turns a bad situation into a "good for me" situation. She's absolutely peak immaturity and I love it.
hello hi howdy I saw you recognized the blessed name of our Lady of Fantasy, Tanith Lee pray tell which of her works are of your favorites for I am also of the Lee Devotees and have been for years
i have come so, so late to tanith lee (few months back, i think?) but it took like fifteen pages to fall fully in love with her and i'm so excited to get through her whole catalogue. like trying so hard to take my time but i also just want to eat every single page at once experience.
My friend, you have... so much joy ahead of you, I delight for you in the journey ahead. Especially with the Tales from the Flat Earth still before you, the Birthgrave trilogy, the Blood Opera trilogy, Biting the Sun, the Unicorn trilogy, the Piratica books, the standalone novels and short story collections...
I have read 56 of her novels and short story collections and I am clawing and scraping to get the rest. There's also her Esther Garber pen name where she wrote even more glorious queer fiction.
Once you've read the Tales from the Flat Earth (Night's Master, Death's Master, Delusion's Master, Delirium's Mistress, and Night's Sorceries) I recommend: Biting the Sun (Don't Bite the Sun and Drinking Sapphire Wine in one volume) The Secret Books of Venus (My personal favorite is "Saint Fire") The Secret Books of Paradys The Blood Opera trilogy Day by Night Cyrion The Gorgon and Other Beastly Tales Louisa the Poisoner Heart-Beast ...I can do this all day...
alright my friend, because you said you enjoyed making rec lists: i am intrigued by tanith lee but she has about 9 million books, and it sounds like they are of highly variable quality. if it is something you would enjoy, would you make me a short list of what you would recommend to me specifically? (arguably this is a selfish thing to ask in a public ask instead of a DM, but aren't asks more fun for this sort of thing?)
A personalized Tanith Lee rec list! I love this idea.
There is a certain subset of Tanith Lee books which are about angry, reckless young women messing with a society which is trying to contain them, and I think those are the ones I would recommend you start with, including but not limited to:
Biting the Sun
Black Unicorn [series]
Wolf Tower [series; also YA]
These don't fit that above criterion but I would recommend them to you specifically for other reasons:
Day By Night
Lycanthia
i'm going crazy. im reading tales from the flat earth and every post or tweet or article about it only talks about it in context of plagiarism. i just want to see art and discussion about the BOOKS and TANITH LEE. NOTHING ELSE sš
I understand this feeling intimately.
So, let's make this easy!
How far have you gotten? What's your favorite character so far? Do you plan to read the collection of stories, "Night's Sorceries" as well?
I've seen a lot of Tanith Lee's work being mentioned in light of...
...yeah, we all know.
And the thing that is starting to bother me is how many of these posts are tagged with 'radfem safe' or 'radfems do touch' or the like.
...y'all know Tanith Lee wrote transgender characters that weren't predatory men pretending to be women right?
Y'all... do realize that Tanith Lee wrote queer fiction representing a huge swathe of the queer community?
Particularly fascinating is how many terfs reblog this and seem to believe I was speaking about their blog in particular. Or being oh-so-smug about "I'm going to read the books anyway."
You know what?
Good.
Maybe some of the lessons Tanith Lee had to teach will get through your ideology and you'll start valuing people instead of hateful rhetoric.
This is a point I overlooked in my initial bafflement. Radical feminism is a mangled, imperfect, and harmful ideology. So terfs, do read Tanith Lee. Read her other work under her pen name of Esther Garber. Read Ursula LeGuin. Read Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley and Diane Duane. Read Angela Carter and T. Kingfisher and Anne McCaffrey. Read Octavia Butler and Toni Morrison. Read more.
Maybe it'll help you.

sorry to say i never read tanith lee.. any specific books you recommend from her??
crashes into your house with a complete list of all tanith lee booksĀ
ok so tanith leeĀ is a british writer of mainly science fiction, horror and fantasyĀ and has long been my personal aesthetic goalsā¢Ā
having written around 54 novels and 188 short stories, i discovered her stories via a second hand dusty bookstore when i picked up the vampire scifi gothic romanticism in space novel: sabella / alternative title: the blood stone [ yes. you read that right. vampires. in space ] finished it in one sitting and 13 year old me, went. this. this is me. i have found my people. i then went on to find in the same bookstore the novel, the silver metal lover. [ basically robots + the question of love. exploring the concept of what makeās one a sentient being capable of love ]Ā
there arenāt words enough in the english language to convey just how much this authorās work has influenced my perception of stories and how i create. my inner world was shaped to a large degree by the writing of this amazing human. when she passed on it was a loss to the written word. and yes iām being that dramatic. her work is that good.Ā
some completely biased recās for you, nonnie āĀ
- sabella [ the blood stone ]Ā
- women as demons: the male perception of women through space + timeĀ
- the complete flat earth series
- the blood opera sequence [Ā be warned this is a dark series. tread lightly ]Ā
- the silver metal lover // sequel: metallic love [ the s.i.l.v..e.r series ]Ā
- the secret books of paradysĀ
crashes in right after
Biting the Sun (a compilation volume ofĀ āDonāt Bite the Sunā andĀ āDrinking Sapphire Wineā āa world where genderfluidity is absolutely normal)
The Black Unicorn trilogy (complete with a realĀ āpet peeveā)
The Secret Books of Venus (a reimagined Venice, Italy)
The Gods Must Be Thirsty (a historical novel about the French Revolution; def not her usual style but still with that beautiful Tanith perspective and tone)
LITERATURE MEME: [10 / 10] prose works Ā ā½ Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee
Itās all real out there. Itās all beautiful and real, and throbbing and singing and alive!
