What you'll find - for prev but also anyone interested - is that the faster the moving animal you're trying to photograph the higher the shutter speed gets. I normally shoot birds at 2000-3000 frames per second in order to get sharp feathers in flight, and after a bunch of trial and error anything under about 8000 was just not enough for these little wasps while in flight if I wanted to see detail. They're so fast that even getting these shots required setting my focus distance when they were sitting on the flower, shooting burst, and hoping they took off during the burst.

The reason the ISO is so high is because that lets me use a higher aperture (how wide open the lens is). The narrower the aperture - the higher the F number on the screen - the less light gets in, but the deeper the depth of field is. If you have a shallow depth of field, you get photos like a lot of my early macro attempts... where the nose of an animal facing the camera is in focus but the eyes and ears are not! When you're shooting with a high ISO your images can get really noisy, especially in low light, but I was working in really strong direct sunlight so I had room to mess around with settings. (You can push this too far. I accidentally took a bunch of baby elephant pool wrestling photos on 12000 ISO because I was exhausted and forgot to reset after messing with settings in a really dark reptile house. There's a reason those aren't online.)

I also just want to point out that I am also fairly new at photography overall - I've only really been doing animal photography seriously for the last three years - and that a lot of what will help you get better is trial and error. I have two photography mentors who are both super technical guys and they repeatedly tried to explain the exposure triangle theory to me (the relationship between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed). It never stuck. Y'know what did? Taking a truly astounding number of photos and just messing around with my settings until it started making sense. I shoot with all my settings on manual now, but I absolutely did not start there.

I only say this because high ISO plus a high aperture is a surefire recipe for fuzzed out photos-- As you raise your aperture value, once you hit the diffraction point, your resolution begins to go down, which when combined with the noise can be a huge pain.

(Though that also depends on your lens. I could get up to F32 on my nikkor without the resolution getting too bad, but F16 and above on my laowa are a pain. Such is life)

The increased clarity of lower ISO can be worth it in my opinion cause you can get stuff like this

I had not thought about trying flash - you can’t use them at zoos so it hadn’t crossed my mind for wildlife.

They are really right about the combination of high aperture and ISO making things grainy. I was able to push to F10 there because of the lens I was using, but I couldn’t go much further and smaller glass wouldn’t work at those settings at all.

I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.

Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:

Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.

No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.

So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:

Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:

Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.

Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.

POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.

When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)

If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.

In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.

So like idk there seems to be this popular sentiment that dogs are expected to be essentially living plushies whose mental needs boil down to "tell me i'm a good doggo" and even people who don't think that seem to believe this is what everyone else expects and uh

I forgot where I was going with this but i just find it baffling and anyway terriers are not necessarily a terrible choice for beginners just don't expect them to behave like goldies and this could probably be said for any other two breeds too.

Any dog can be a wonderful companion and there are always exceptions - each dog is an individual, but there is a reason why some breeds are considered more beginner-friendly than others. Each dog will be different, but breeds have some tendencies when it comes to personality and predisposition to some behaviour. And many, many breeds out there have traits which make them excellent at their job, but not as well suited to live as a pet. I think such blanket statement as "don't get x or y as your first dog" are also due to not knowing how much time and effort a random person is willing to put into knowledge and training and how consequent they are.

Of course, a dog is not a living plushie - a dog will always need to have its needs fulfilled and every dog needs to be raised and have basic training. Any dog, even the most mellow one, can develop a behavioral problem if not handled well. But some breeds tend to be more malleable and agreeable and for some it's easier to get them the enrichment they need. It's way easier to play fetch or go for a jog than to get your pet dog a flock of farm animals to herd or to train demanding dog sports on specialised equipment. That's why some breeds are recommended to an unknown beginner, and I think, for most part, it tends to be a sound advice. Especially because some people tend to buy a dog of a more demanding breed based on looks alone thinking 'it's a dog, how hard can it be' and later it turns out they've bitten more that they can chew.

That's not to say anything against terriers or LGDs. I know many wonderful terriers, and my last dog, while a mix, had a heart of a ratter.

HOWEVER. There's a reason these dogs are not a great choice for every beginner. Both terriers and LDGs are dogs meant to work independently, which makes them default to their own decisions instead of looking to their human for guidance. That 's why they may be difficult to train.

Terriers are a very diverse bunch, but many of them are hunting dogs bred to hunt predators, which combines a strong drive with being stubborn and unyielding. This can easily lead to terriers not getting along with other dogs, being cat agressive and very difficult to recall around wild animals. The strenght of these traits varies a lot depending on a breed, but for many (esp foxterriers and similar breeds) it's just their default setting. That's what they're bred for. If you get a driven terrier and you don't know how (or are not willing to) manage these behaviours, you can end up with a frustrated terror of a dog.

Still, there is the assumption that people want the latter. And the assumption I've seen in many homestead/farm/breeder spaces (not limited to dogs), that the person asking must have rushed into it without thinking.

thought about this because it's so frustrating when people argue that 'dying in childbirth' is a historical sort of event that doesn't happen nowadays (false) and therefore is irrelevant to the legal status of abortion, since it's not a real danger.

except it super is, and i think a lot of people haven't noticed that this argument in addition to simply being incorrect is basically the same as when people say we don't need vaccines for deadly diseases because no one gets those now anyway.

Ignoring all the other medical developments such as c-sections and ultrasound and blood tests and infusions and transfusions and hygiene (not as obvious as "just wash your hands", btw) and postpartum monitoring and other ways that reduce or eliminate risk for mother AND child. There have been incredible cases of successful surgery in gestation where the baby was returned to the womb afterwards to finish developing! And let's not forget preemie care, which is able to save babies earlier and earlier at stages that would have meant a sure death just a few decades ago!
