Filming days on Z5 were long enough, but sharing a hotel room afterward made everything feel⦠different.
Not bad. Just charged.
Like there was always something humming just under the surface between you and Malachi that neither of you fully acknowledged out loud.
The room wasnβt hugeβtwo beds, a small couch, and a suitcase explosion that somehow already belonged equally to both of you.
Malachi kicked his shoes off near the door with a tired sigh. βIβm still not convinced production didnβt do this on purpose.β
You glanced over while unpacking your bag. βDo what?β
βPut us in the same room.β
You snorted. βMalachi, youβre not that special.β
He turned slowly. βI think I am.β
βDelusional.β
But you were smiling.
That was the problem lately. Everything with him turned into smiling too easily.
Too often.
The air shifted as you both settled into your own routinesβhim grabbing a hoodie, you sorting through makeup and skincare on the dresser.
Normal.
Almost.
Except every so often, your eyes would catch his in the mirror.
And neither of you would look away fast enough.
Malachi broke the silence first.
βYouβre exhausted,β he said quietly.
βSo are you.β
βYeah, but I donβt look like Iβm about to collapse.β
βI donβt look like that.β
He raised an eyebrow.
You hesitated. ββ¦Okay, maybe a little.β
That earned a soft laugh from him as he leaned against the dresser beside you.
For a moment, neither of you moved.
Just close enough that you could feel his warmth.
Close enough that it stopped feeling like coincidence.
βYou ever think about how weird this is?β he asked.
βWhat, sharing a room?β
βNo,β he said, voice softer now. βThis.β
You glanced up at him. βDefine βthis.ββ
His eyes flicked to yours briefly before he looked away like he suddenly wasnβt as brave anymore.
βYou know what I mean.β
The tension between you tightened.
You turned slightly toward him. βMalachiβ¦β
He exhaled slowly. βWe should probably sleep.β
βProbably.β
Neither of you moved.
That was the problem.
You both could, but neither of you really wanted to break whatever this was hovering between you.
Malachi reached up absentmindedly, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. The touch was small, but it made your breath catch anyway.
βYouβre gonna make this really hard,β you whispered.
He gave a quiet, almost helpless smile. βYou started it.β
βI did not.β
βYou did,β he said, softer now. βFrom day one.β
Your heart thudded a little louder.
For a second, it felt like he was going to say something else.
Something important.
Instead, he just looked at you like he was trying very hard not to cross a line.
βYouβre tired,β he repeated again, but this time it sounded more like a question than a statement.
You nodded slowly. βYeah.β
He hesitated.
Then gently took your hand.
Just that.
No jokes. No teasing.
Just warm fingers lacing with yours like it was the most natural thing in the world.
βCome on,β he murmured. βLetβs actually sleep before the crew finds us dead tomorrow.β
You laughed softly, letting him guide you toward the beds.
But neither of you let go of each otherβs hand until the very last second.
And even thenβ¦
The space between your beds felt a lot smaller than it should have.
