Part two
You don’t know who to choose
His Brother, My Secret
Chapter One — The Kiss That Wasn’t Meant for Him
The Sturniolo house was louder than usual.
Nick had music playing from the kitchen while he attempted to cook something edible. Chris was on the couch scrolling through his phone, occasionally laughing at videos before turning the screen toward you.
“Look at this one,” he grinned.
You laughed, resting your head against his shoulder.
“I swear your For You Page is broken.”
“My humor is elite.”
“It’s questionable.”
Chris gasped dramatically, placing a hand over his chest.
“That hurts.”
You smiled before leaning over and kissing his cheek.
He smiled right back.
Dating Chris had been…easy.
Warm.
Comfortable.
He was the kind of boyfriend who made sure you got home safely, stole your hoodie just to wear it around the house, and somehow convinced you to stay for dinner almost every night.
Matt…
Matt was different.
Quiet.
Reserved.
You and Matt got along well enough, but he mostly kept to himself. He wasn’t cold—just harder to read.
Sometimes you’d catch him looking at you before immediately looking away.
You always assumed it was because you were dating his brother.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
⸻
Later that evening…
Nick announced he wanted everyone to help him rearrange furniture.
“No,” Chris groaned.
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I literally live here.”
“And so do I.”
Chris sighed dramatically before standing.
“This family is exhausting.”
Everyone split up around the house.
Nick disappeared upstairs looking for extension cords.
Chris went into the garage.
Matt walked down the hallway toward the laundry room.
You wandered after Chris, intending to ask if he wanted anything to drink.
The hallway lights suddenly flickered.
“…Seriously?” Nick shouted upstairs.
Everything went black.
The entire house lost power.
“Oh come on!” Chris yelled from somewhere.
“I can’t see anything!” Nick complained.
You laughed quietly.
Only for a second.
The house was completely dark.
The only light came from the faint glow outside through the curtains.
You carefully walked down the hallway.
“Chris?”
No answer.
“Chris?”
You heard footsteps.
Soft.
Close.
Relieved, you smiled.
“There you are.”
The figure stopped in front of you.
Without thinking…
You reached up.
Your fingers lightly grabbed the front of his hoodie.
“I found you.”
Then…
You kissed him.
Soft.
Gentle.
Just like you always kissed Chris.
For a second…
He froze.
Every muscle in his body went rigid.
Matt.
He knew immediately.
He knew exactly who you thought he was.
He should pull away.
He should tell you.
He should say your name.
Instead…
His heart won.
He kissed you back.
Only for a few seconds.
Not because he wanted to trick you…
But because if he suddenly shoved you away, you’d know instantly something was wrong.
And a selfish part of him…
Had imagined what kissing you would feel like more times than he’d ever admit.
Your lips moved against his.
His hand instinctively rested on your waist.
His heart pounded so loudly he thought you might hear it.
Then—
The lights snapped back on.
Everything became visible.
Your eyes opened.
You smiled—
Until you saw him.
Not Chris.
Matt.
Your smile disappeared instantly.
Your face turned white.
“…Matt?”
He immediately stepped back.
“I’m—”
“Oh my God.”
You covered your mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
Neither of you moved.
Neither of you knew what to say.
“I’m so sorry.”
The words spilled out before you could stop them.
“I thought you were Chris.”
Matt swallowed.
“I know.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“I know.”
Your hands shook.
“I’m so sorry.”
Matt looked down at the floor.
“You don’t have to apologize.”
“I literally kissed my boyfriend’s brother.”
“You thought I was him.”
“But you kissed me back.”
His jaw tightened.
“…Yeah.”
“Why?”
Matt couldn’t answer.
Because the truth would ruin everything.
Because he’d wanted that kiss for longer than he should have.
Because admitting it meant admitting feelings he wasn’t supposed to have.
Instead…
“I didn’t want you to realize in the dark.”
You stared at him.
“…Really?”
He nodded once.
Your stomach twisted with guilt.
Before either of you could say another word—
Chris walked around the corner carrying a flashlight.
“There you guys are.”
He smiled.
“What are you two doing standing in the hallway?”
Your heart nearly stopped.
Matt answered first.
“Nothing.”
Chris looked between the two of you.
“You both look like you saw a ghost.”
You forced the biggest smile you could manage.
“We just got surprised when the lights came back.”
Chris laughed.
“I swear this house is falling apart.”
He wrapped an arm around your shoulders.
“You okay?”
You nodded quickly.
“Yeah.”
Matt looked away.
Chris never noticed.
But as Chris led you back toward the living room, your mind replayed the kiss over and over.
You had kissed Matt.
Matt had kissed you back.
And neither of you could tell Chris…because you weren’t sure which truth would hurt him more:
That it was an accident…
Or that, for a few stolen seconds in the dark, Matt hadn’t wanted it to end.
