Mako was done with being Wu's bodyguard. He hated everything about the job and just wanted out. He was hoping Lin was going to tell him it was all finally over and he was free but no. He was now going with Wu to Ba Sing Sei after the coronation, his worst nightmare. "But I have some good news" Lin said and Mako rolled his eyes "what? I also get to sleep curled up at the foot of Wu's bed every night?". Lin shook her head "no but don't give him any ideas, you are getting help. Suyin is sending over one of her finest guards to help protect Wu with the upcoming coronation. Her name's y/n and she'll be here later today. This is her file, read it sometime before then" she said pressing a folder into his hand. "I don't need help while I babysit" Mako protested but Lin shot him a look "you were just complaining about how annoying Wu is and now you're upset you'll be getting help?". "I don't want to guard him full stop!" Mako began to argue when Lin held up her hand "I don't want to hear it! Just meet y/n at air temple island this afternoon. Help her settle in, introduce her to Wu and then bring her to me later today" and that was that. Mako wasn't happy but he did as Lin said and arrived at Air Temple island just after your ship had arrived. He didn't know you by name but he did recognise you when he saw your face from his brief time in Zafou. He couldn't recall having a conversation with you but if you were so high up in Su's regard you must be good. You were rather small for a guard he noted, barely 5 feet and you didn't look particularly threatening as a good bodyguard should. You were talking to Tenzin and Jinora happily and seemed pretty social and bubbly. Mako got a sinking feeling this was going to turn into his babysitting two people. He was inwardly cursing Su Yin for sending you when Tenzin looked up and spotted him.

Bolin continues to be an annoyingly adorable and a visit to Zafou brings a lot of things into perspective

One of the worst parts of being stuck on a train was you couldn’t avoid people you didn’t like, such as your sister’s fiance. You and Bataar Jnr never got on. You think he saw you as a threat considering you were Kuvira’s sister and honestly the thought she cared for you enough for it to be a challenge the one thing Kuvira truly loved was laughable. 

Herself.  

Nobody could ever challenge that love but Bataar hadn’t got that yet.

So he treated you as if you were both fighting for Kuvira’s attention and spoke down to you every chance he could. It didn’t help his superiority complex that he was a genius while basic science confused you and he sure loved reminding you of it.

Imagine being Kuvira’s younger sister and her recruiting you to seduce Bolin...however the plan works a little too well and you can’t tell if you’re pretending anymore.

Your sister was your world for as long as you could remember. Your first word was her name and you idolised her as many little sisters do with their older sisters. You used to think your sister was the best person in the world. So much so, you took her side in the argument with your parents and when they sent her away you refused to stay with them and went with her. It wasn’t until you were older did you begin to rethink your logic. 

Your sister did care for you in her own way but she was selfish. Your needs and goals only mattered to her when they aligned with what she wanted and when they didn’t...she could be maliciously sneakily and would more often than not manipulate you into doing what she wanted all along. So despite your love for your foster family the Beifongs, when Kuvira left she played the sister card and you caved going with her despite the fact the Beifongs had always been kinder to you. Your sister just had a hold over you that you couldn’t break and so you followed her around like a lost puppy doing everything she said.

That’s how you found yourself in your current predicament. 

The moment Kuvira heard about Bolin she worked at getting him on her side. He was a master earth bender, fiercely loyal and one of the few lava benders in the world!  Kuvira had succeeded in getting him to join her army but that wasn’t enough. She wanted insurance he would always be loyal to her and that’s where you came in. 

Most people panic whenever they’re around their crush, that was normal...however most people didn’t have to cope with their parents adopting said crush. You did. 

True your parents adopted Kuvira before your crush had fully developed but by the time your crush set in that detail was irrelevant. You shared a bathroom with the one girl who drove you crazy and it was torture. Not to mention your siblings made sure that wasn’t just an expression, they could barely contain themselves anytime you and Kuvira were in the same room and it was so obvious. You were just grateful your mom had made Kuvira share rooms with opal, if you had to share a room with her...there's no way you'd still be functioning.

You didn’t see Kuvira constantly, she had her own life and your mom made sure to never force her into family events but you did bump into her a lot. In the week it wasn’t so bad, with school and dancing you were kept out of the house but on the weekends...that’s when your trouble really started. If Kuvira sat next to you at dinner Wei and Wing would grin the entire time making you blush. If you ever passed Opal and Kuvria’s room Opal would call you inside just to ask you questions about your love life in front of Kuvira. Even Huan got in on the act, he’d ask the two of you to assist him when moving his sculptures just to force you together. Your siblings were evil. 

One of the main reason why you hated Kuvira living with you is it made it blatantly obvious how different you were. While Kuvira’s parents gave her up unable to raise her, your parents had literally built you and your siblings a city to make sure you’d want for nothing. While Kuvira was a strong athletic jock you were a trained dancer instead who worked on grace and fluidity instead of brute strength and power. While Kuvira had fought tooth and nail for everything you’d been born with advantages and you always worried Kuvira saw you as some weak delicate rich kid with no grit. You knew being a dancer had preppy connotations and the fact you were also a cheerleader didn’t help. All your friends were preppy feminine girls and that was fine! But Kuvira was so athletic, strong and clever. She didn’t appear to care about superficial things like money or looks. No Kuvira was more about power, people who had a strong purpose or talent and that just wasn’t you. How could she see you as anything more than another preppy girl with no grit or substance?

So you were caught in a continuous cycle between being amazed by Kuvira and utterly embarrassed every time she paid you any attention. 

Attending the same school as her didn’t help either. You usually all walked to school together and for once both you and Kuvira didn’t have anything before school. You put some distance between you, walking at the back while she walked at the front with Bataar with Opal and Huan inbetween as a buffer but your twin brothers caught wise to your plan. Your brothers dropped back to walk beside you and appeared on either side of you. They both grinned widely at you and just as Wei went to open his mouth you shot him a look “don’t you dare”. Wei grinned “what you don’t even know what I was going to say”. “I can guess” you replied and Wing laughed. “Ow really? So did you know I was going to ask you about the party tonight?”. “I did not” you admitted and Wei grinned “exactly!  You always think the worst of me...”. “Because the two of you terrorise me” you replied with a grin and Wing threw an arm around you “what are little brothers for?”. “Anyway this party” Wei said bringing your attention back to the topic at hand “are you coming? I hear a lot of people from your year are going”. You blushed knowing full well Kuvira would be going given that it was being thrown by one of her jock friends. You still planned on going anyway and went to inform your nosy brothers when you paused. "Wait aren’t you too young for that? How will you get in?". Wei smirked "me and Wing have that covered, but answer my question, you know Kuvira’s going". You blushed at that considering she was just feet away. "I know that" you blushed “and would it kill you to be quieter?”. “She can’t hear us Bataar jnr is yapping away in her ear” Wei smirked. Wing nodded "and no skirting the question! Are you coming yes or no? This is the perfect time for you to make your move before our boring brother does" Wing smirked. You frowned "don’t call Bataar that". "Why he is!” Wing argued and Wei smirked. You reached the school and Wei and Wing spotted their friends “We’ll see you there and if you need us to wingman you at the party with Kuvira....”. “Leave” you yelled and your twin brothers rushed away laughing.

The school day passed rather quickly and before you knew it you were walking into the party with a few friends. The party was already in full swing despite it being rather early so you grabbed a drink and started to scope out the area. There was a lot of dancing, drinks in the kitchen and seating around the living room. You spotted Kuvira immediately. She was standing near the corner of the room with a bunch of jock and athletic people. She looked nice, her hair hung in its plait and she was laughing softly at something her friend said. Thanks to cheerleading you knew some of the athletes from matches and sure enough one of the girls stood with Kuvira called you over. Trying to ignore how good Kuvira looked in the simply baggy shirt and trousers she had on, you ignored her and made your way forwards. You hugged your friend and nodded to Kuvira. She smiled at you and you looked away quickly focusing on your friend. You chatted for a while before your friend was called away and it was just you and Kuvira. It was weird, you lived together for christ sake but whenever you were alone her attention made you so flustered. Meanwhile Kuvira was as calm as ever "so how you liking the party?" she asked and you smiled "it’s good! Are you enjoying it?". She nodded "i’ve been training way too much lately it’s nice just to blow off some steam and relax...speaking of, what are you drinking?" Kuvria asked catching sight of the weird colour liquid in your cup. You shrugged "I honestly don’t know, it was from the punch bowl". "Not sure your mom would be wanting you to drink alcohol y/n" Kuvira smirked. "Well don’t tell her about Wing and Wei" you smirked looking to where your brothers were dancing, very clearly drunk. "How did they even get in?" Kuvira asked. "Huan" you smirked "he helped them forge the invites, said it’d be funny to set Wei and Wing lose on a social event". "Impressive" Kuvira commented and silence settled. "So you’re seriously not dancing?" Kuvira asked nodding to the sea of people "isn’t that your whole thing?". You blushed, embarrassed that was one of the first things Kuvira thought of relating to you, "yeah i guess..." you shrugged. "And you’re stood here talking to me because...?" she asked smirking. Kuvira’s confident smile made you blush and confirmed your theory she’d caught onto your crush. You should’ve suspected it, she was the smartest person you knew, of course she’d work out you liked her. Figuring you had nothing to lose if she already knew you took a large sip of your drink and stood up straighter. “Maybe i just feel like staying here with you, is that okay?" you said staring her in the eye. Kuvira raised an eyebrow at your newfound confidence but smiled "that’s fine". You smiled at her response and sipped your drink.

Soon the whole floor got taken up with dancing teenagers and when someone barged into you Kuvira glared at them making them apologise immediately. She let the guy retreat after he did so and then looked at you "want to go outside? It’s quieter and we can actually hear one another". You nodded still flustered and Kuvira smiled "come on...you might want to hold onto me" she said with a small smirk and led the way. You blushed but grabbed her arm as commanded and let her take the lead. Kuvira soon found a path, or created one if anyone happened to get in her way. Being a jock paid off as Kuvira easily moved obstacles and you stuck close behind her. Halfway across the room you caught sight of your twin brothers and looked away quickly but of course they spotted you. "Hey y/n" Wing called catching sight of you and Kuvira together and he cheered "Wei look!". You blushed as they made such a fuss drunkenly cheering just because you were walking across a room with Kuvira. "Ignore them" you told her horrified but Kuvira just laughed and kept walking. 

Finally you made it outside and you dropped your hand from Kuvira’s arm. You made your way to a patio and looked out at the view. Kuvira admired the view for three seconds before she turned back around. “So...” she said leaning back against the railing resting her elbows on it. She looked effortlessly cool and you looked from her to the view fleetingly, trying to decide which was better.  "We don’t always get time to talk just the two of us" Kuvira said casually "i know we live together but i hardly see you". "I know it’s weird" you nodded "i always just guessed our schedules never matched up, you’re in a lot of clubs". "Well so are you" Kuvira nodded "you’re out of the house before me most mornings”. You shrugged and Kuvira watched you "i feel like i don’t even know what’s been going on with you, how’s dancing going?". You hated talking about dancing to Kuvira, she was just so physically impressive you felt like anything you said would pale in comparison. "It’s good, how are all your sports?". Kuvira smiled "they're good too, what about you....how are you? You...seeing anyone interesting?". You shook your head embarrassed "no, you?". She shook her head "nope, not many girls have caught my eye honestly, what about you? Any girls you got your eye on?". You blushed and stared at the floor "i erm...not that i can...". "Why are you looking down?" Kuvira asked and you blushed more "i didn’t realise i was, sorry". "Don’t apologise" Kuvira smiled "anyway i think i know why...". Kuvira smirked suggestively and you paled. "If it makes you feel better it’s not one-sided, i think you're hot too". You groaned loudly and covered your face with your hands “so you do know about my...situation?”. "Well yeah..." Kuvira grinned "i mean your family was not subtle and you know i live in your house right?". You blushed and Kuvira smirked "plus that, you blush very easily, pretty much whenever i look at you". You blushed even more and Kuvira chuckled "it’s cute". 

You didn’t want Kuvira to think you were cute, it had been your worst fear ever since you first developed a crush on her and hearing her say it made you angry.  You wanted her to see you as you saw her. You weren’t just some dainty little dancer. "I’m not cute" you replied and Kuvira smirked "you are, you're adorable". "No i’m not" you snapped and Kuvira went to argue amused but you shut her up. You grabbed her by the waist and kissed her. You had to stand on your tiptoes to reach but as soon as Kuvira realised what you were doing she leant down to meet you halfway. You kissed her passionately trying to get your point across to her and the alcohol was definitely influencing you considering you were somehow the dominant one in this situation. To be fair Kuvira didn’t seem to mind too much and just followed your lead, only too happy to be pushed up against a wall by you and that spurred you on.

You finally pulled away harshly and stared at her not moving back. "Still think i’m cute?" you asked her. Kuvira went to move her lips but no sound came out, she was actually speechless. You felt pride surge through you when you heard a crash. "Y/n your brother fell through a table" your friend yelled and you swore. You ran inside and saw Wei grinning. "I’m fine" he assured you but he looked dazed and his head was bleeding. "Shit" you frowned "i have to take him to my mother, Wei come on we’re going to get you help". "No i’m fine" he grinned but you yanked his hand "no you’re not, we’re going now!". You were struggling to make him walk when suddenly someone grabbed Wei’s arm and put it over their shoulder. "Grab his other one" Kuvira told you and you did as she said. Together you led Wei out of the party. Wing trailing behind you and made your way through the streets of Zafou. "You’re such an idiot Wei" you frowned "now mum is never going to let us out ever again". "You know she doesn’t have to know..." Kuvira said and you frowned "what?". "She doesn’t have to know Wei hurt himself". "But Wei needs medical attention, i have to go to her for it". Kuvira shook her head "no you don’t, I know somewhere we can go and they won’t tell your mom. We can get Wei treated, pop him back in his room and boom, she'll never know". You paused "what is this place? How do you know about it?...". "A friend" was all she said and you paused "Kuvira...". "Trust me" she said smiling "don’t you trust me?". You sighed and nodded "fine" and let her lead you deeper into Zafou.

It was an underground clinic for people who couldn’t afford the usual hospital. You felt bad using their resources when your family could afford to buy the whole system let alone the treatment so made a sizable donation before returning to your seat beside Wing who was asleep. Wei was in with the doctor and Kuvira had gone to find coffee. You stared into space worrying about Wing when a cup of coffee appeared in front of you. "Here" Kuvira said holding it out to you “not sure how good it’ll be but we might be here a while". "Thank god mom knows not to wait up for us anymore". Kuvira nodded "we'll be home before she notices don’t worry". You nodded and smiled "thanks for this, for helping me with them. Kuvira smiled “no problem”. You smiled back at her and she grinned slightly “y/n earlier...” when a doctor called your name. 

Wing’s injury was minor, he didn’t have a concussion and the cut on his head didn’t require stitches. With some dressing and disinfectant he was released and you couldn’t believe how lucky you’d gotten. You made your way back to your home and helped Wei and Wing sneak into their rooms. After that you and Kuvira headed inside through the front door and you paused by your door, wondering if you should say something about the kiss earlier. Kuvira hadn’t really acted any differently so you weren’t sure if to bring it up or not. “Y/n can we talk?” Kuvira asked suddenly and you jumped surprised “sure”. You led her into your room and flittered your eyes around nervously. You’d thrown some clothes on the bed that were your rejected party attire and quickly rushed to hide them along with all your makeup and products. You suspected Kuvira never had to use concealer in her life, she just seemed like the type to wake up perfect. You hid all your *embarrassing*  items and turned back around. You yelped to see Kuvira looking at some photos you had above your desk. “They’re just...that’s nothing” you called but Kuvira just smirked over her shoulder at you before looking back at them “they’re nice, you look good in these profile shots”. You blushed when you realised Kuvira was looking at one of your dance photos and willed her to turn back around. “So you needed to speak to me?” you called and Kuvira tensed. “Yes I wanted to explain...” Kuvira turned to face you and wrung a hand through her perfect hair.  "When i said you were cute earlier....i didn’t mean it in a bad way". You nodded "i know but it’s never a good thing to hear from someone like you". "Someone like me?" Kuvira asked. You rolled your eyes "i know i’ll never be impressive physically like you are...i’m a dance major not a soldier, but still cute is as far from impressive as you can be". "And you want to impress me?" Kuvira asked smiling. You blushed in response and Kuvira laughed. "Just because i find you adorable doesn’t mean i don’t also find you...impressive as you put it". "You do?" you asked and Kuvira nodded coming closer. "You act like dancing doesn’t involve physical discipline, strength, flexibility...i’m ashamed to admit i’ve admired you more than once when you were doing your warm-ups and i could never do what you do....to look as good as you do when you do" Kuvira grinned as you blushed. "So when i call you cute...it doesn’t mean i don't find you incredibly hot too". You would've thought she was joking but her body language and the look in her eye convinced you otherwise. "You’re serious?" you laughed and Kuvira smirked "i don’t know what i've done to make you think i don’t find you attractive but hopefully i can get rid of all those doubts...right now?". Kuvira was now right in front of you and stared at you with a suggestive smirk on her face. "I think that can be arranged" you smiled and stepped further into your bedroom, Kuvira following you...

Kuvira left before she could fall asleep beside you. She told you she was leaving so she didn’t get caught by your mom and you begrudgingly agreed it was best. You missed her warmth but rolled back over and fell into a calm sleep.

The next day neither of you were at breakfast, you had dance practice before school so always took breakfast on the road and Kuvira had a big game coming up so was getting some cardio in before school too. So when you arrived at school with no sighting of Kuvira since your bedroom, you were worried where you’d left things...were you hook up buddies? Were you somehow dating now? Neither seemed right.

You were walking with your friends to class. They were chattering around you but you were struggling to focus. Not paying attention to anything, you rounded a corner and almost collided with Kuvira herself. She’d just come out of the changing rooms and had evidently just finished a training session. She was tugging her jacket on rushing to class like you. "Kuvira" you jumped and she did too "y/n, hey" she smiled. Was that a blush on her cheeks? "I didn’t get a chance to see you this morning". "Don’t worry i was out of the house by dawn" you shrugged and Kuvira nodded "yeah i figured...what lesson have you got now?". "English" you explained "you?". "History, so we may as well walk there together". History and English were next to each other so it would have made sense but you knew Bataar had maths with Kuvira first period. That was on the other side of the school and Kuvira was heading in the opposite direction just to walk with you. "Sure" you grinned blushing slightly and Kuvira smirked. "So i was wondering...how did you like the party and everything yesterday?" Kuvira asked. You smiled, you were aware your friends had gone very quiet to listen in but didn’t care "i enjoyed it a lot, best party i’ve been to". Kuvira smirked "ow really?". You nodded blushing "definitely and that’s including the trip to the hospital". "And the events after?" Kuvira asked raising an eyebrow. You blushed but nodded "that was the highlight". Kuvira’s smirk was huge and she was struggling not to grin "sounds like a successful outing...maybe you’d like to keep it going?". "How so?". "Well how about we do something after school? I’ve got training so you’d have to hang around but after 4:30 i can be all yours". You blushed and Kuvira seemed pleased at your response. "I can waste an hour" you shrugged and Kuvira grinned "great". You’d reached your class and your friends went inside but you paused. "So i’ll meet you by the bikes?" Kuvira asked "4:30 sharp". You nodded "it’s a date". Kuvira’s lip twitched into a smile and she grinned. "Great" and started walking away "don’t be late" she called after you and you nodded smiling.

Later

You were sat in the cafeteria when you heard someone call your name. "You turned and saw your little brothers making their way over to you in the crowded room. They’d both only been at the school a few months but everyone knew and loved them. It was actually worrying how quick they’d settled in and made friends with everyone. Your friends just moved over for them and Wing and Wei made themselves at home stealing some of your food. "When were you going to tell us about you and Kuvira?" they asked and you shushed them "how do you know?". "The whole school knows she asked you out! Everyone’s buzzing about it". "Why?" you asked and they shrugged "guess because you’re so opposite, you’re cute and girly and she’s tough and impressive". You blushed "well you should all stop gossiping, we hung out yesterday and....". "Skip over that part" Wei frowned “I saw Kuvira sneaking around the bushes this morning and don’t need to know why”. You blushed and carried on "and then she asked me out today, it’s hardly newsworthy". Wing grinned "you are so not feeling that on the inside! You finally got your girl y/n". You blushed, aware Kuvira wasn’t too far away and could easily guess what you were discussing. "Shut up" you hissed and your brothers both grinned "fine we'll go but be home by 7 alright and no funny business, we’ll go tell Kuvira that too". "Don’t you dare" you scolded them making them laugh as they rushed away.

The end of the school day came pretty quickly and with an hour to kill you did what you always did with spare time... practised. You found a spare training room and went through your latest routine. You got lost in the movements and before you knew it, it was time for your date. You came out of the studio to see Kuvira leaning against the wall right outside. "Am i late?" you asked checking your watch and Kuvira shook her head "no i just finished early so i waited here seeing you were in there, looking good by the way". You blushed "you were watching me?". "You know windows are made of glass right? Anyone walking past was watching". You blushed embarrassed and Kuvira smiled "no need to be bashful you looked amazing, i didn’t know you work out that much . You rolled your eyes "you are aware i know you have abs and have seen your arms right?". Now Kuvira blushed "i am but that was a nice reminder".

The great thing about Zafou was the large open spaces with many beautiful parks and Kuvira led you to one you’d visited often as children. You found a nice bench under a large tree and sat down to enjoy the ice creams you’d bought. You were enjoying Kuvira’s witty company when suddenly she looked down. “Y/n last night wasn’t how I expected we’d get together, I’m sorry that it wasn’t very traditional...I hope you don’t feel rushed or used?”. You shook your head “not at all, I completely get it. We’d both been drinking and I’d wanted it for ages so i’m not surprised or upset it happened”. Kuvira smirked “ages huh?”. You blushed looking down and Kuvira laughed “have you really?”. “What do you think based on last right?” you asked and Kuvira shrugged “true, you were very enthusiastic...but I want to hear you say it again”. You felt a shiver run up your spine but looked up directly into Kuvira’s eyes “I’ve been wanting to do that with you for ages”. Kuvira blushed and looking down smiling “well how about we start dating so we can as much as you want”. You blushed at her offer and nodded “i’d like that”. Kuvira smiled “good” and broke the distance between you kissing you. It was a lot softer than the ones yesterday and it felt sweet and meaningful. Kuvira pulled away after a while but stayed close to you “i’ve been wanting to do that for ages too”. You blinked “so you made a big fuss over me saying that, getting me to repeat it, even though you were thinking the exact same thing?”. Kuvira grinned “yup, I just wanted to hear you say it and it was worth it”. She tucked a piece of hair behind your ear smirking “can you blame me?”. You blushed “I can’t say I can”. 

You and Kuvira wandered around for a few hours before returning home. The second you stepped inside your mother appeared. "Ow Kuvira, y/n it’s so good you’re here! Quickly i need your help". You both looked at your mother confused “why what’s wrong, is everyone okay?". Your mother nodded tugging your arm "yes everything's fine just...." the door opened as she finished her sentence "your grandmothers here". Toph stood in the middle of the room lecturing your father on something. He saw you and grinned "ah y/n is here! You remember her right mother?". "I told you never to call me that and of course i remember my grandchild! What kind of question...". Toph turned to you and paused "what so no greeting for your grandmother?". "Grandma Toph" you smiled hugging her "sorry it was just a shock but a welcomed one". Toph tutted "and who is this?" she asked gesturing to Kuvira behind you. "Kuvira" you said quickly gesturing for her to come forwards. "You remember her mother? Kuvira lives with us" Su explained. "Ahh yes the orphan" Toph said and you winced at her mistake. You quickly cut in to change the tone of the conversation. "Kuvira is training to become a soldier grandma, she’s one of the best metal benders in Zafou". Toph made a noise "you’re that good?" and Kuvira blushed "i’m good yes". Toph laughed "i like someone who can admit their talents, now Su bring out the fancy wine, this is a celebration isn’t it? It’s not every day Toph Beifong visits you". 

Your mother complied and gathered the makings of a very good party given the short time frame. Your whole family was gathered in the living room as per your grandmother’s request. You were all equally confused but went along with it for your mother and found yourself cornered by your eccentric grandmother not long after. "So, how long have you and Kuvira..." Toph started and you paused "what?". Toph rolled her eyes "and they call me blind...don’t tell me your family can’t tell! You and that girl are clearly smitten, just the way your heart sped up when you said her name told me that". You blushed "my parents don’t know, only my siblings". Toph nodded "ah so they’ll know soon enough, those twin brothers of yours are so loud....why haven't you told your parents? You know your Aunt Lin is sapphic too don’t you?". You nodded "i know i just...it hasn’t come up" you shrugged "please don’t tell them". Toph smirked "you think i’d stop you having secrets from your parents? I encourage it". You frowned "you’re odd but i like you and your visits". Toph smirked "you too kid" and slapped your back.

You somehow weren’t worried your grandma knew about you and Kuvira. You trusted her and she kept her word. Weeks passed and your parents were none the wiser. You and Kuvira continued spending time together after school and had some more late nights. Everything in your life was good so of course something had to go wrong...your dancing. You and Kuvira trained often so you were both constantly sporting some injury or weak spot but your calf had been bothering you for a while and after one practice it went completely. You couldn’t put any pressure on it but managed to hobble to the door where Kuvira was sure to be waiting for your after school date. You managed to pull the door open and fell against the wall “hey, so slight change of plan...I need help”. 

Kuvira was worried sick. She made you sit down and began bandaging your calf. “I told you to rest it! You need some down days or the muscles get worn out”. “I know, I know...i’m an idiot”. “I didn’t say that” Kuvira said looking at you and you blushed. “Now, can you stand?” Kuvira asked finishing your strapping. She offered you her hand and you pulled yourself up. You put weight on your leg and winced “it’s...okay”. “No it’s not I can see how tense your body is, we’ll have to get a doctor”. You sighed but thought that was probably best. “Okay, if you put your arm around me I think I can walk outside”. Kuvira raised an eyebrow “are you crazy? No, you’re not going anywhere on that!”. You paused “but how will i...”. “Your family have the best doctors so i’m taking you home”. “You?” you asked and Kuvira nodded “ill carry you”. You blushed and Kuvira smiled slightly “if anyone sees they’ll just think it's some weird foreplay”. You laughed still blushing but shrugged “fine just don’t blame me when we’re referred to as that couple”. Kuvira smirked picking up your bags putting them over her shoulder “let's go”. 

Kuvira carried you back home and it would’ve been cute if your calf didn’t feel like it was being ripped apart. Kuvira got you home quickly and called for your mom and the doctor. She led you to your room and carefully put you down on the bed. You waited for the doctor frowning at your leg and Kuvira smirked knowing exactly what you were thinking. "Don’t worry you’ll be back to dancing in no time”. You sighed “I hope so, the recital is only weeks away...I better not have blown my shot”. “Hey you haven’t” Kuvira said coming to sit beside you “you probably just need a few days rest or something, it’ll be fine you’ll see”. You nodded but still looked upset so Kuvira continued. “And in the meantime i can be of service to you". That made you smile and you looked up at her "you’re offering to carry me around everywhere?". Kuvira shrugged "well you have been bragging about how strong i am so i’ve got to prove it....but i also meant in other ways...i could help take your mind of the pain i’m sure". Kuvira looked you up and down and you grinned tracing the line of her jaw before kissing her. Kuvira was definitely taking your mind off your injury but unfortunately that meant you both forgot the small medical party Kuvira had instructed to come to your room as soon as possible. 

You heard a thump followed by an "ow". Your mom stood in the doorway and you died. Right then and there you felt like your soul just packed up and left your body. "Y/n the doctor’s here...." she said not looking at you or Kuvira. Kuvira moved away from you rapidly and Su let the doctor in. The room was incredibly tense as the doctor examined your leg. She told it you it wasn’t torn or injured just very overworked. She recommended bed rest and low-intensity dancing again within a week. You were so relieved you almost forgot about your mother until she made the doctor show herself out. She turned around and closed your door. "So..." she said looking from Kuvira to you "how long has this been going on?". Kuvira went to answer but you didn’t think she should have to be the one to explain things to your mother. "About a month" you replied and your mom jumped "a month!". You nodded "yeah, it started around the time grandma toph came". "Toph?". "Yeah she knows..." you said awkwardly "she just guessed". Su sighed and sat down "my mother was here for 3 days and could tell you were dating when i had no idea". You frowned "mom it’s okay....". "Why didn’t you tell me?" she asked, "did you not feel like you could trust me?". "No it wasn’t that" you said immediately "it was just...awkward to bring up, i know aunt Lin didn’t properly come out until well into adulthood to save herself the fuss and i guess i wanted that too, i just didn’t want to have to have a formal conversation with you and dad, it seemed so awkward and unnecessary". Su frowned but nodded her head "i just...i’m sorry we made you feel like you had to hide it". You shook your head "you didn’t i just...didn’t know how to tell you". Su smiled sadly "well i’m glad i know now and i’m pleased for you both" she smiled at Kuvira "you’re both wonderful women and i love you both". You smiled and tried to hug your mom but winced when you moved your leg. "No i’ll come to you" she smiled and hugged you tightly. "Well i’ll leave you two alone" she commented patting Kuvira’s arm as she walked past her.

The door shut and you got nervous all over again. Your relationship hadn’t been that serious so far and you worried this might scare Kuvira off. So sighing you stared down at the floor. "I’m sorry, i had to tell her i couldn’t think of a way to explain...". "It’s fine" Kuvira said and you frowned "are you sure?". Kuvira shot you a smile "of course it is, y/n I know we haven’t discussed it really but this with you...it’s not a fling or short term, at least not for me so of course I don’t mind your family knowing”. You smiled “it’s not a fling for me either”. Kuvira smiled and sat down across from you. “That's good” she smiled “plus given the fact that pretty much all your family knew apart from your parents i’m surprised it took them this long”. You nodded your head “that is very true”. “The only thing is...” Kuvira started and you tensed "it will make sneaking into your room a lot harder" she smirked. You blushed as Kuvira got that familiar look in her eye “your mom’s sure going to get suspicious if my bed’s not slept in...I’m surprised she left us alone now" Kuvira purred "i mean left to our own devices....who knows what we'll do?". You leant up and kissed her and Kuvira smiled kissing you back. You moved to sit up and Kuvira hand shot to your chest pushing you back down "no you're hurt, so stay put". "But how will we....?" and Kuvira just shushed you "leave it all to me" and kissed your once again.

With Kuvira’s help you made your way downstairs to dinner. As you approached the dining room you heard a lot of noise telling you your whole family was in there. You noticed Kuvira tense and realised this was the first time you’d be an open couple with your family. You took Kuvira’s hand softly watching her reaction. Kuvira smiled and looked down at your hand “you’re ready for this?”. You nodded “completely” and led her inside. Everyone’s eyes fell to your hands and you suspected Kuvira was blushing adorably at the attention. You just smiled and everyone was very overly welcoming. They all rushed to make room for you, calling greetings, worrying over you and thanking Kuvira for helping you. “We're just so grateful you were there” your father smiled at her “thank you for bringing her home”. “It was nothing” Kuvira blushed but your family all pushed that away. “It was and we're grateful” your mother smiled and your father nodded “we’re really pleased y/n has a partner like you”. Kuvira blushed as all your family echoed what your father said and she looked down overwhelmed “thank you...i’m very pleased too”. The others all laughed and changed the topic sensing Kuvira’s emotions. You smiled and looked at her “you okay?” you whispered. Kuvira nodded “I just...wasn’t expecting this good a reception”. You smiled “well you should, we’re all crazy about you”. Kuvira blushed and you smiled “you’re very cute”. You emphasised the last word and Kuvira raised an eyebrow “really? You find me cute now?”. You laughed “adorably so”. Kuvira chuckled and shook her head “i’ll take it...I’ll just prove you wrong later”. You grinned “I’ll hold you to that” and turned away to let Kuvira’s blush die down. She did look adorable and you couldn’t stop the smile on your face. You felt the happiest you’d ever been and your life was turning out pretty good. 

You entered President Raiko’s party late and hurried inside hoping to avoid your mother’s wrath by appearing as soon as possible. Being Lin Beifong’s daughter and employee meant she was twice as hard on you as anyone on the force, so she would not take your tardiness well. You were waved into the building by guards who recognised you on sight and rushed into the ballroom. You saw the party was already in full swing and braced yourself for all the fake smiling you’d have to endure when a young woman appeared across from you. “Avatar Korra” you nodded in recognition of the girl who grinned at you. “Miss Beifong” she smiled in greeting “you look as beautiful as ever...you legs alone seem to go on for years in those trousers” she commented glancing at them and you blushed. “Funny I just had a similar thought about your biceps”. Korra beamed “ow you can’t really see them in this thing but I’d be happy to give you a closer look”.

You couldn’t resist a smile and your blush grew to have such a beautiful woman flirt so blatantly with you. Korra was always like this around you and you enjoyed it greatly even if it wasn’t professional. Korra was a breath of fresh air in Republic City and you enjoyed her confidence and humour. You liked the avatar a lot but you had no intentions of pursuing anything beyond flirting with her. For one thing she was young, cocky, beautiful and THE avatar. You supposed she had hundreds of boys and girls queueing up for her and didn’t want to just be another name on her list. You’d heard about how the previous water tribe avatar had been a hit with women and apparently that was a trait Korra shared. She was the avatar, who wouldn’t be weak to her charm? Still you tried to behave so aimed to change the topic of conversation.

“I think we should join the party seeing as we’re both very late” you smiled slyly and Korra smirked “I didn’t think Beifongs were ever late. Are you really trying to tell me you’re not perfect?”. The girl was insatiable. “We all have our secrets” you replied and Korra’s grin only grew. “Mysterious, intelligent and beautiful...you have to let me lead you into the party. As the Avatar it’s my duty to serve the people”. “Well who I am to get in the way of that” you smirked rolling your eyes as you took her outstretched arm. Korra led you into the party proudly and you enjoyed being on her arm. Still you were in work mode, so you only stayed by Korra’s side for an appropriate amount of time before excusing yourself so nobody would get the wrong idea. Korra never failed to make you smile or blush but you wouldn’t let it progress no matter how much fun it would be. So you allowed the flirting and lingering glances but stopped it from going any further.

You saw Korra pretty regularly as she was always in trouble with the law in some way or another and not a month after the party President Raiko banned her from Republic City. It was something he’d likely take back pretty soon but still she had to leave so you and your mother went to help her however you could. The avatar didn’t seem too bothered by the President’s command and still had that cocky smile on her face. She let you into Tenzin’s home and explained how she was leaving tomorrow to go look for air benders anyway. She read out the names of some known airbenders in the earth kingdom and you paused as one was familiar.  “Wait did you say Opal? Is she from Zafou by any chance?” you asked and Korra nodded “yeah why?”. Your mother tried to silence you but you didn’t notice, too excited. “She’s my cousin!” you burst “This is so great, i’m so proud of her”. “Wait so Suyin is your sister?” Korra asked Lin and your mother nodded “yes. Which is something I wished to remain a secret but clearly that is not an option anymore” she said shooting you a look. “Well this is great news” Korra smiled “you have to come with me!”. “What!” your mother cried and Korra sighed “if she’s your niece then you can help us recruit her! We need all the help we can get”. “No way!” Lin cried “I am not seeing my sister ever again if I can help it, y/n can go if you want a Beifong so badly”. Korra looked at you and smiled “that does sound appealing, what do you say y/n? Want to come on a field trip with me?”. Korra held out her hand to you and you blushed, hoping your mother didn’t notice. You knew you probably shouldn’t go. Being in close quarters with Korra would certainly challenge your restraint but you hadn’t seen your extended family in so long and this was the perfect opportunity to go visit. Plus Korra looked so good when she smiled at you like that. “Sure” you said taking her hand “someone has to keep you out of trouble”.

You met Korra and her friends at Future Industries the next day and were soon flying to Zafou. Korra came to stand beside you on the deck and leant forwards flexing her arms right in front of you. “I’m glad you agreed to come” Korra smiled and you nodded “me too, it’s been forever since I’ve got out of Republic City”. Korra’s eye glinted “does this mean I’m going to witness holiday y/n? It’d be fun to see you let your hair down and go wild”. “If you’re lucky maybe you will” you smirked and Korra nodded “i’m looking forward to it” and winked before leaving you alone once more. You stared after her as she walked away and Korra must’ve felt your eye on her because before she disappeared back into the ship she turned and caught you red-handed watching her. She smiled widely a chuckle slipping from her lips and you turned around sharply, blushing vividly. Agreeing to this trip may not have been a smart decision at all.

When you touched down in Zafou Korra had you right beside her in pride of place. You recognised your aunt immediately and she addressed Korra first before she spotted you beside her and she did a double-take. “Y/n?” she asked and you grinned “Aunt Suyin!” and rushed forwards to hug her. Your aunt wrapped you in a hug and then quickly tugged you to go find your cousins, momentarily forgetting the avatar was here. She summoned all your cousins and they rushed to greet you...well some did. Bataar junior didn’t look impressed and Huan just glanced at you not particularly bothered but the twins and Opal were very welcoming. “It’s so good to see you again!” Opal cried and you nodded taking her hand “it is! It’s been far too long and I can’t believe you’re an airbender now!”. Opal nodded “trust me it was a shock to us all but i’m so excited to learn airbending”. “Well Korra can definitely help you with that” you said gesturing to the avatar who nodded confidently “of course, anything for y/n’s cousin” and you blushed slightly but managed to hide it.

You enjoyed your time with your family greatly and got along well with all your cousins. You participated in Wei and Wing’s power disk game and being a good metal bender yourself almost won the match. You noticed Korra watching you and briefly tried showing off before getting wiped out. The twins noticed Korra watching and invited her to join but she declined explaining she couldn’t metal bend. Your cousins rushed to assure her she could learn and volunteered to teach her. Korra seemed very excited at the idea and agreed before she turned to you “wait a minute y/n why did you never offer to teach me?”. You could tell she was only feigning annoyance so you shrugged “what can you blame me for wanting something over the almighty avatar?”. That stroked Korra’s ego and she smiled lazily “no but I’ll certainly get my own back in some way”. “Ow really? How”? you challenged her and the girl just shrugged. “I’m not sure yet, but be on your best behaviour Beifong” she smirked before rushing away.

Korra went off to train with your cousins and you were relieved hoping this would be a time for you to cool down and recover but no. Opal caught you and invited you to catch up with her in the gardens. You of course obliged your cousin but found yourself seated directly in view of Korra’s training with your cousins. You tried focusing on Opal but your eyes kept getting pulled to the avatar as she picked up metal bending remarkedly quickly. You noticed Korra had spotted you and she appeared to be putting on a show, trying valiantly to challenge your cousin entirely for your benefit. It was a clever strategy and soon Opal trailed off just letting you admire Korra. Your cousins were experiencing first-hand just how skilled the avatar could be and you saw them breaking out in a sweat with how hard Korra was pushing them.  

After a while they began trying to score past one another and Korra got an idea. She *accidentally* bent a disk near you and your cousin Wei teased her for being sloppy. She just shot them a lopsided grin and jogged over to you. “Ladies” she smiled looking straight at you “i’m sorry I didn’t see you there”. “Ow really?” you asked and Korra grinned “yeah I had no idea you were here whatsoever...which is odd considering how every eye is drawn to you whenever you’re nearby”. You blushed going red and Korra’s smile grew “I’ll leave you to your chat. Opal, Y/n” she nodded at you both in turn but winked when she met your gaze. You watched her run back to your cousins and found Opal staring at you. She immediately pushed you squealing “you didn’t tell me you were dating the avatar!”. “I’m not and keep your voice down please” you begged seeing the smug look on Korra’s face which told you she’d noticed Opal’s reaction. “But she was very openly flirting with you” Opal retorted and you nodded “I know we do that a lot but it’s just our friendship. I’d never let it go further because she’s the avatar! She’s not after a relationship she just wants a fun fling and I can’t give her that. Trust me the avatar will get bored of me and move on soon enough”. “Ow yeah?” Opal asked looking to where Korra was still putting on a show for you. Korra scored a point and shot you a smile. You blushed vividly and Opal laughed “I don’t think she’s not going cold on you any time soon”.

At the end of the week your Aunt Suyin threw a party to celebrate Opal’s progress and avatar’s arrival. It was magnificent and you hadn’t seen this much earth kingdom food in...well forever! You made sure Korra and the others were all okay and socialised with your cousins greatly enjoying being with your family. Bataar jnr told you about his machines, his girlfriend Kuvira traded military expertise with you, Wei and Wing quizzed you about all the pro-bending in Republic City, you teased Opal about her crush on Bolin and even Huan showed you some of his paintings. You were absolutely thrilled your family still felt like a family after all this time and hadn’t been this happy in a long time. However all that excitement can be draining. Towards the end of the night you began to grow tired so went outside for some fresh air and quiet. You were relaxing in the picturesque moonlight when you were disturbed. “Well your aunt certainly knows how to put on a spread” someone called and you jumped to find Avatar Korra making her way over to you on the abandoned balcony. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress and her eyes shone in the dark light. “She does” you smiled “never let it be said Beifong’s don’t know how to put on an event”. “That’s for sure” Korra agreed coming to sit right beside you. “The city is so beautiful” she commented before she turned “as are you”. “Thanks” you blushed “you look very beautiful too”. “There’s no way I can compete with you in that outfit” Korra smiled “Beifong’s apparently always look stunning as well as being great hostesses”. “Have you been checking out my aunt then?” you replied and Korra laughed “of course not, I only have eyes for you”. “Sureeee” you laughed but Korra nodded “I do I promise! You’re all I think about and why wouldn’t I? You’re the most interesting girl I’ve ever met. I’m crazy about you”. You blushed under Korra’s intense gaze but didn’t look away. “I....I don’t know what to say” you finally spoke up and Korra shrugged “well then how about we don’t bother talking anymore?”. Time seemed to freeze and you viewed the present in slow motion as Korra cupped your cheek gently and leant forwards. You liked the way her hands felt on you and instinctively leant into her before your brain caught up with the situation. “Wait! Korra I can’t” you said your heart hammering in your chest and the avatar frowned inches away from you. “You can’t? why? Do you not find me attractive?” Korra asked. “No of course I find you very attractive, i’ve never seen a human being I find more attractive than you” you admitted very flustered. “Then what’s the problem?” Korra asked and you sighed “the problem is I don’t just want to hook up with you a few times and be done with it. I know some people like that kind of thing and i’m sure as the avatar it is the perfect option but I’m not like that. Casual one night stands just aren’t my thing so I’m sorry I have to decline. Please don’t ask me again” and you rushed away. Korra called after you but you clearly wanted to be left alone so she didn’t follow you. She hung her head in her hands at how messed up things had gotten.

When Korra had allowed herself to wallow for a bit she came back inside to find the party over. She made her way to her shared room and found Asami waiting. “Korra where have you been we were all worried sick and...” Asami started when she caught sight of Korra’s expression and stopped abruptly.  “What’s wrong?” Asami asked and Korra sighed “you gave me terrible advice that’s what!”. Korra explained the situation more and Asami felt awful. Being more experienced with relationships Korra had come to Asami for advice on how to approach her feelings for you and it hadn’t worked well. Given Korra’s past approach of blurting out her love for people without a second thought, Asami advised Korra to try a different approach with you but she hadn’t meant it so literally. Instead of being serious or passionate Korra had been entirely flirty and forward with you. No substance just fun. So you’d wrongly gotten the idea all Korra wanted was a fun fling when she actually was madly infatuated with you and wanted far more long term things with you. Asami wasn’t sure what she could do but seeing Korra so distraught she knew she had to try and help her friend.

So Asami made her way to your room hoping you wouldn’t mind such a late-night visit. Asami knocked on your door and heard movement inside. There was a pause before she heard you call “who is it?” nervously. “It’s Asami” she called back “I need to speak to you”. The door opened slowly and Asami saw you looked upset. “Did Korra send you”? you asked quietly “because she didn’t do anything wrong I just need some space”. “No she didn’t send me but I am here because of her, I need to confess something”. Your eyes widened in confusion but you nodded and let Asami into your room. The minute you turned to face her Asami burst “It’s my fault! Korra came to me when she realised she liked you and asked me for advice. She was terrified of messing this up and doing what she did with Mako...with him she’d blurted out a lot of intense things right away and so I told her to do the opposite. I suggested she just toned down the seriousness and had fun with you. Flirt a little and try and gauge how you were feeling before she confessed her whole heart to you. But it seems she took my advice too much and now you don’t think her intentions are good at all which is not the case! Korra very much likes you for more than just your appearance and she has for a while”. You stared at Asami at an apparent loss for words “so Korra was...what acting?”. Asami shrugged “kind of, she was putting on this cocky flirty front when she’s actually a lot more emotional and sweet...she didn’t mean to come across so forward she was just following my advice which backfired horribly. I’m so sorry it upset you I promise that was not her intention at all. If you want to blame anyone blame me”. You assured Asami you weren’t upset with her and spent the next half hour understanding how the situation had gone so wrong. You were very excited by the end of it and couldn’t wait till morning to speak with Korra. Asami told you she was in their room and wouldn’t mind you disturbing her so late.

So you rushed to Korra’s shared room and knocked on the door lightly. Your stomach was bubbling with butterflies and you weren’t sure what you were going to say when you saw her. The door didn’t open so you knocked louder hoping Korra wasn’t asleep. Still there was no sound from inside so you frowned and decided she must be asleep. You didn’t want to wake her so started to retreat from the room when you heard a loud thud from inside. “Korra?” you called through the door “are you okay?”. You got no reply and were growing more and more concerned when you heard something smash inside followed by a grunt of pain. “Korra?” you yelled through the door and began bending the metal of the lock. The door swung open and you saw the room was an utter mess. Naga was unconscious on the floor and by the window...four people had a struggling Korra in their arms. She looked very weak and wasn’t putting up much of a fight so you figured she must’ve been drugged. “Korra!” you cried rushing into the room. You had no idea who these people were but you weren’t letting them take Korra. You launched into a flurry of attacks and managed to land a few hits on the earth and water bender. The air bender sent a gust which knocked you back but you were quick on your feet and pursued them leaping out of the window. You yelled as you chased them quickly attracting the attention of the guards who sounded the alarm. Suyin appeared as did her guard Kuvira and they helped cut the quartet off. “You have nowhere left to go, let her go” you glared and the leader just smiled “never”. You looked at Korra lying limp at their feet and felt rage take you. “Then i’ll drag her from you myself” and ran at him.

3 hours later

You were sat in the infirmary beside an unconscious Korra waiting for the effect of the drug to wear off. Everyone else had gradually retreated to bed but you couldn’t sleep. The adrenaline from the fight was still pulsing through your veins and was only overshadowed by your worry for Korra. You’d won the fight with the help of Suyin, her guards and Korra’s friends but still the drug they’d used hadn’t worn off. Your eyes fell to her for what felt like the hundredth time and you sighed “please wake up”. Finally Korra listened. With a loud gasp Korra jolted awake and you scrambled to your feet. “Korra breath! You’re okay, you’re safe just breathe!” you commanded and Korra slowly began to calm down. “Y/n? What happened?”. “The White Lotus, I didn’t realise it was them at first but i’ve been briefed on them. They tried to kidnap you when you were a kid and they tried again tonight”. You saw Korra shiver at that and frowned. “But never mind them” you sighed wrapping an extra blanket around her shoulders “how are you feeling?”. Korra frowned “okay...a bit groggy like i’ve come out of a really heavy sleep but it’s not too bad. It’s getting better. How are you?” she asked and you froze “me?”. “Yeah” Korra said offering you a small smile “you don’t look like you’ve slept a wink”. You chuckled softly “I haven’t. I wanted to see you wake up first and make sure you were okay. I haven’t been able to rest since it happened...I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them with you I was so angry but you’re okay now and that’s all that matters". Korra smiled at you "yeah I'm okay now...thanks to you". It wasn’t the usual cocky smirks she sent you. Instead it was a sweet tired smile but it made your heart hammer in your chest just as much. "Do you remember much?" you asked and she shook her head. "No I remember something hitting Naga. I went to look at it when one hit me too. I backed away from the window as the world began to spin and then everything went blurry...the next thing I remember was seeing you in my doorway. You attacked whoever had me and I fell. I remember being unable to move and seeing you send rocks flying through the air. You were terrifying" she laughed "a woman possessed". "Of course I was they were going to take you! I know I might have sent mixed messages last night but I like you Korra. I was coming to tell you that. Asami explained to me what happened and why you behave as you do around me". Korra blushed at that "what were you coming to say to me?". "Well I was coming to ask if it was true, did you really put on a mask around me, acting all confident and promiscuous?". Korra nodded "yeah...I meant everything I said to you I wasn’t lying about my attraction but I was doing the opposite of what I'd usually do because my last relationship didn’t work out well. I came on too intense too quick so I tried to take a more fun carefree approach but that didn’t work. I'm sorry I offended you or made you think I was only interested in you for one thing. I do think you’re gorgeous but that's just one of many things I like about you and by no means the most important". Korra blushed looking down and you found her adorable. How had she hidden this side of her so well? "So is this, you know, the real you?" you asked double-checking. Korra nodded "yep, this is me. I'm emotional, reckless and I always say the wrong thing. Korra stared at you in shock and you just smiled at her. "I...I..." she babbled and you smirked "how about I kiss you to save you having to speak?". "Yes please" the avatar breathed and you gently placed a hand on her cheek and kissed her. The kiss was sweet and Korra seemed uncharacteristically shy. She pulled back blushing vividly and you smiled at her reaction "how was it?". "Good...amazing" she replied and you smiled "great". Korra looked up at you but blushed as soon as she met your eye and you smiled taking her hand softly "I like you Korra and that kiss was good for me too, if you’d like to make it a more frequent thing we could go out on a date sometime?". "I'd love that!" Korra agreed before wincing "too eager?". "No it was adorable like you" you smiled kissing her forehead "now it really is late. You should try and get some rest, something tells me the next few days are going to be very long and strenuous". Korra nodded "I agree, goodnight y/n". "Goodnight Korra" you smiled and closed her door softly. The avatar wasn’t a womaniser but a shy bashful passionate woman. You were pleasantly surprised and couldn’t wait to see all the different layers of her left to discover.

Even since you’d caught their attention that first day the boys were smitten so you saw a LOT of them. You began training with them pretty regularly and team avatar picked up on the fact the twins seemed to occupy all your time.

You were enjoying a nice afternoon together with your friends when you spotted the time and realised your plans with the twins were starting soon. You waited until Bolin and Mako finished bickering with a fond smile before standing up and Bolin immediately frowned “noooo” he cried “we just got here you can’t go!”. “We’ve been here 40 minutes” you pointed out but he just crossed his arms “so?”. You laughed along with the others and Mako looked at you “so where are you heading off to?”. “Do you really need to ask?” Korra smirked and you rolled your eyes. “Ahhh the twins” Mako said with a smirk and you threw a rock at Korra. The gang liked to comment a lot on your situation with the twins and Korra was the worst for it. “Hey don’t attack me you’re the one dating them both”. “we’re not dating we’re just...having fun” you shrugged and Asami laughed “that what you’re calling it huh?”. Korra chuckled “I mean i get it they’re both attractive powerful benders like you....why wouldn’t you want to have fun with them?”. “Exactly” you nodded gathering your stuff and Korra smirked. “Plus I bet the metal bending comes in handy in lots of ways hey y/n?" Korra smirked and Asami laughed along with her. "What does that even mean?" you asked confused and Korra shrugged watching Asami with a smile "I don’t know but I bet the fact they’re both so physically fit being metal benders comes in handy". You frowned “I never thought about it that way just because they’re metal benders...Asami what’s your experience with metal benders being more physically capable?”. Asami paused “Why would I....”. “Well because Korra’s a metal bender I figured you’d know all about that” you grinned as both the girls went bright red and babbled while Mako laughed. “And on that note goodbye” you smirked and headed off.

“You’re late” Wing called as you reached the yard and you frowned “I know sorry I got lost, your home is huge”. “Yeah we’re pretty rich” Wei commented and you laughed shaking your head “yeah? Well maybe you should hire a bodyguard for these training sessions? I’ve been kicking you around so much it should be illegal”. Wing smirked as Wei’s swagger dropped and he stumbled over words trying to think of a comeback. “Don’t strain too hard” you smiled sweetly and patted his shoulder before walking out onto the yard. Wing followed you still smiling and you glanced at him “does that smile mean you forgive me for being late?”. “Totally” he grinned and you smiled, Wing had a really nice smile especially when the sun shone off his face like that....you were distracted from your staring as people called out Wing’s name. You looked up and saw there were some spectators today. You didn’t recognise any of them but you soon saw why, they were clearly here for Wing and Wei only. “Who is that?” you asked smirking and Wing looked at you awkwardly “some...friends”. “Just friends?” you asked smiling and Wei appeared “why are you jealous?”. “You wish” you grinned catching the helmet he tossed to you and throwing it to the side “no helmets, my trainer told me they’re crutches that dim your bending, she said earth bending is all about taking risks and showing brute strength”. “You know the more you talk about this swamp woman the less i think she’s real” Wing commented and you went to argue the crazy swamp lady was totally real when Wei waved to the girls above making them all cheer. You watched slightly annoyed at how much Wei seemed to enjoy the attention and he smirked “you done talking yet?”. “You done showing off to your girlfriends?”. “Just about” he smirked and you rolled your eyes.

You would all start off stood an equal distance from one another and attack one another fairly. But Wei and Wing had a habit of forming an alliance against you and it was their favourite thing to do when they were losing. They did it whenever you got into a good rhythm and as soon as you were getting into your stride they crept closer. It was always harder when they could help one another so you actively tried to keep them apart. You loosened Wing’s footing and launched an attack at Wei focusing all your attention on him. “You’ve got this Wei” a spectator called and you heard several other girls cheer him on. Given this advancement you began attacking Wei harder. He was hardly blocking your attacks and Wing just watched. “Aren’t you going to help?” Wei called but Wing just shrugged “nah i’m good”. The girls began chanting for Wei and it only made you smile because he was going to lose. You moved closer and closer, your attacks only marginally missing him and he was struggling big time. You felt the winning strike as you released it and could see Wei knew it was over too. You heard the crowd above gasp as your disk roughly crashed into Wei and smirked slightly. “I quite like your cheerleaders Wei” you called as he stood back up slowly “their gasps of concern really warm my heart”. Wei rolled his eye as Wing laughed. “Whatever you’re just jealous”. You snorted “maybe if you were a better metal bender but at the moment....”. You were suddenly interrupted by shouting. “What are you doing in here this is private property!” a voice called and the girls all began to argue. Bataar junior appeared in view and spotted you all “Wei how many times have i told you no sneaking your cheerleaders in here!”. Wei shrugged “ahhh come on Bataar, I can’t disappoint these lovely ladies”. You rolled your eyes at the same time as Wing and Bataar junior. “Well I can” Bataar junior replied coldly “out!” he yelled and all the girls began to disperse. “Bye Wei! bye Wing” they called and walked away. Wei watched them go before his eyes fell to his oldest brother “so were you just here to ruin my fun or did you need something?”. Bataar glared “I am here because I need your help, I need someone to metal bend the new machine me and dad are working on, mom’s busy with the avatar, Huan would never do it and I can’t think of anyone else, so one of you need to come help me”. Wei and Wing looked at one another. “Not it!” Wei cried suddenly and Wing swore “really we’re doing that? Are we four?”. “Yep, it’s the easiest way and you lost so run along and leave me and y/n alone” Wei smirked stepping closer to you. You saw Wing look down at that clearly unhappy with that scenario and stepped forwards “don’t worry you won’t miss much, I was only toying with Wei to keep the match going but now you’re gone I won’t have much motivation to...”. Wing smiled “ow really?” and you nodded “yeah why did you think I was going easy on you? Your eyes look really good in this sunlight”. Wing blushed and you smiled seeing the shyer twin react to compliments. “Okay well I’ll go help Bataar and see you guys later?”. You nodded “totally” and smiled. Wing smiled brightly at you before walking away still wearing a dazed look.

You turned back around to see Wei heading towards the other end of the field. “Wei?” you asked and when he didn’t reply you followed him. “Wei?” you called and he looked over his shoulder “ow well I was just thinking if you’re worried I might be too boring for you how about we make the stakes a bit higher?” he asked. He pulled a lever and parts of the ground fell away to reveal different terrains and objects. “Nice, why have you never shown me this?” you asked and Wei shrugged “my dad only just finished making it, he wanted to go a big show of it with a lot of people but as we’re alone I figured we could give it a test run?”. “Totally” you grinned excited to use the different terrains and surfaces to your advantage. “And one more thing to make sure i definitely can’t bore you....” Wei pulled out two pieces of cloth “why not do it blind?”.

You’d trained blind before, your earthbending teacher had made you do it all blind initially but that had been a while ago so you were a little out of practice. Combine that with an unfamiliar environment and terrain you hadn’t experienced before and you were way out of your depth. But you’d never admit that to Wei. You walked to your end of the field and tightly tied the bandage around your eyes. You took a strong stance and let Wei attack first. You deflected his shots without retaliation and just worked on getting your bearings. “What’s wrong?” Wei called “not so confident anymore”. You heard his voice come from your left so sent a disk that way. You heard a soft grunt and smiled “and that’s why you shouldn’t talk so much loudmouth”. “Good point” Wei called back and then went silent. So silent you couldn’t even hear him moving. That made you panic.

You moved away from your position as quietly as you could, trying to make sure Wei wouldn’t know where to find you. You were making good progress when you stepped onto a new terrain with a loud crunch. You winced as immediately attacks were sent flying at you. You managed to dodge some by instinct and began moving quicker trying to escape Wei’s range. You lightly ran over the terrain but Wei just followed you. He seemed to gain on you no matter where you ran and so you stopped and maintained your ground. You were on some loose rocky terrain so footing wasn’t good but at least now Wei had to block your attacks. You sent rock and metal flying at him but after a while you didn’t hear anything. “You know...you’re not as good at this as I thought you’d be” Wei said suddenly right next to you. You jumped and backed up but hit a wall. “Yeah...we’ll i’m not done yet”. You strook out at Wei but he sensed that. Wei retaliated by moving the earth beneath your feet making you slip and he took his opportunity. While you were trying to stay upright, he snapped metal around your waist and fixed it to the wall without any hesitation. He simultaneously secured your hands in rocks meaning you couldn’t move. You grunted in shock and breathed heavily, utterly surprised and a little bit annoyed that you’d lost. “I think I win” Wei said coming into view as he tugged your blindfold off your face. “Of course you’d say that” you huffed and Wei laughed “you’re pinned against the wall, i have your hands trapped and i’m holding a massive piece of metal”. You shrugged “I could still get out of this”. “Ow really?” Wei asked and you nodded confidently “easily” and Wei laughed. “God you’re stubborn” he grinned watching you. “I know” you said staring at him “you got a problem with that”. “Nope, I actually rather like it” he smiled tracing your jaw lightly “your confidence is...impressive, I’ve never met someone quite like you”. You smiled in reply and just looked up at him “I know”. Wei laughed shaking his head before his eyes fell to your lips. He dropped the restraints from your body but didn’t step away and neither did you. He closed the distance between you and just when his lips were about to touch yours a voice called out “Wei? Are you there?”. Wei paused centimetres away from you and you felt his body slump “sometimes I hate having so many siblings”. You smirked and Wei moved away from you slowly. Wei stepped out of the shadows and looked around “Opal? I’m down here, what’s wrong?” he called. “There you are!” Opal cried with relief “come quick Mum’s fighting with aunt Lin!”.

You and Wei ran to the gardens to see Lin and Su yin were indeed fighting. You gaped shocked at how good they both were. “Korra shouldn’t you....” you called but Bolin shook his head “this is how siblings fight, they’ll be fine”. You raised an eyebrow but were brought out of your thought by Wei and Wing. “Go mom!” Wei called and you saw Wing frown “what’s wrong with you they could get hurt!”. Wei shook his head “mom won’t get hurt she was trained by the greatest earth bender that ever lived!!”. “So? What is she hurts aunt Lin?”. Wei paused “we have really good medics?”. Wing groaned storming off and Wei sighed “someone’s in a bad mood”. “I mean he does have a point” you shrugged “they could both get hurt”. “Yeah” Wei nodded “but Wing’s just jealous that’s why he snapped”. You frowned feeling bad, “maybe one of us should go after him?”. Wei nodded “sure but I know you’ll make more progress than me”. “But he’s your twin, don’t you know him better than anyone?”. “Yes and that’s why I know without a doubt you running after him will definitely improve his mood”. You laughed shaking your head “fine, i’ll go comfort your brother”. Wei nodded “have fun, but not as much as we had of course...”. Wei grinned at you suggestively and you looked down blushing. “I’ll see you” you replied after a brief pause and rushed after Wing. 

You caught up to Wing quite quickly and spotted him not far away on the path. “Wing!” you called and he paused “y/n?”. “Are you okay?” you asked “Wei thought that was a bit unprovoked”. “I’m fine” Wing sighed “just....I have to finish doing this for Bataar”. You nodded your head “how about I help you? Two metal benders will get it done faster than one”. Wing smiled softly “sure, it’s this way”. He led you into a large laboratory and you whistled impressed. Your job was literally just straightening out some pieces of metal but there was a lot. You got to work but it was boring and slow. “You know you don’t have to help” Wing called after a few minutes and you smiled “was my face that obvious?”. He nodded “go find Wei, it’s okay I don’t mind”. You frowned at how Wing said that, as if you would obviously prefer Wei. You enjoyed your time with Wing just as much as your time with Wei, but Wing didn’t seem to expect that. “No I promised to do this and so I’m going to finish this if it kills me”. Wing laughed and then frowned in thought “well we could talk, that could make it go faster?”. You nodded your head “sure what do you want to talk about? Metal bending? The avatar? How rich you are?”. “I have a question actually” Wing replied and you nodded “shoot”. “What’s your family like?” Wing asked and you paused “mine?”. “Yeah...I just realised I never ever asked, I can’t believe how rude Wei and I have been that we didn’t even ask you about your family”. You laughed “it’s fine, my family is good! Small but good, it’s just me my mom and dad, we were kind of outsiders in our tribe. The water nation isn’t progressive and so many people were wary of my earth nation dad and then me too when I developed earth bending...but then I met Korra and that all changed! Being her friend literally overnight changed my life. My family was no longer shunned but respected and acknowledged and it was all because Korra ordered it” you said smiling fondly “Korra...she’s my best friend in the entire world”. You were cut off from your speech by said best friend. Korra, Asami, Mako and Bolin were walking by and they all of course spotted you. Korra grinned as she looked from you to Wing.  “Well what do we have here?” she asked strutting into the room “the sparring wasn’t enough to get rid of all that tension I see”. You sighed and looked at Wing “forget everything I just told you, Korra I will kill you if you don’t get out and leave us alone this second!”. “Okay I’m going...just keep it PG in here okay? Avatar’s orders!”. You earth bent her out of the door and groaned “Wing I’m so sorry....” but Wing just smiled a small blush on his face “it’s fine...it’s just what family do”. You nodded your head and Wing glanced at you “what she said was true though...I am glad I got to talk to you privately, sometimes it feels like a constant show between me and Wei when you’re around...so it’s nice to talk without feeling any tension or pressure”. “Yeah it is” you smiled “it’s also nice to just talk and not throw rocks at each other”. Wing smiled “yeah, did i miss much earlier when i went with Bataar?”. You blushed slightly remembering how close Wei had come to kissing you and struggled to look Wing in the eye “not much, he showed me the new special feature your dad worked on”. Wing frowned “we were saving that to show you next week...trust Wei to jump the gun”. “Ow sorry I didn’t know” you frowned but Wing shook his head “it’s not your fault it’s Wei, he loves getting the upper hand but you know what? This time I won’t let him”. Wing stood up suddenly and you jumped as he held out a hand to you “come with me”. “Where are we going?” you asked and Wing grinned “Wei isn’t the only one with secrets to show off”.

You followed Wing into the centre of Zafou to a guard tower. The guard recognised Wing and he managed to talk his way inside the building, telling them his mother wanted him to oversee the procedures tonight, whatever that meant. The guard looked at him and then at you sceptically before letting him inside. Wing led you to the top floor and onto an airship that was waiting to take off. You caught it just in time and watched as it soared into the sky. Wing led you to the front of the airship with huge windows and smiled. “I don’t suppose you’re going to tell me why we’ve stowed away on an airship?”. Wing shook his head “nope! So don’t bother asking”. You nodded your head “okay fine” and Wing paused “wait that’s it, seriously?”. You smiled “I’m not always unreasonable, if you want me to wait and see...then i’ll do that”. Wing nodded his head “i’m impressed, you deserve the best seats, come on!”. Wing led you to a ladder and grinned at you before climbing. When he reached the top he stepped out of a hole onto the top of the airship and moved so you could follow. “It’s a bit cold and it may be a bit too much if you don’t like heights...” Wing started but you cut him off. Your eyes were instantly captured by the view and he doubted you were listening. “Wow!” you yelled leaning over the railing “this is amazing!” and Wing smiled. He joined you by the railing and pulled you back a bit “these railings aren’t my father’s best piece of work so maybe don’t lean on them too much”. “Got it” you nodded “this is amazing Wing, it’s so beautiful, thank you for showing it to me!”. Wing smiled “this isn’t it yet”. “What else could you show me?” you asked and Wing smiled as the creaking sound started “this”. You watched amazed as the giant metal walls of Zafou began to move. They slowly began to bend down towards the ground and you watched amazed as they began fitting into one another. “The gates....they’re closing to form domes” you said amazed “your dad really is the best architect in the world!”. Wing nodded “he is” and you turned your gaze back to the ground. All over the cities domes were forming as the walls closed to form protected perimeters. The metal looked beautiful and shone in the setting sun sending out blinding reflections. Finally the last dome was sealed just as the sun set. “So did you like it?” Wing asked and you grinned “like it! That was amazing! Just when I think this city can’t get any cooler...thank you for showing me this” you smiled and Wing blushed “no problem”. You smirked as he looked away first and stared out at the sealed domes. “If you’re cold we can go back inside” Wing asked and you smiled “I know I’m an earth bender but i’m half water tribe too, this is nothing”. “Ow yeah” Wing asked and you smiled seeing him shiver “but we can back inside if you want?”. “No it’s fine” Wing said “if we go back inside then we’ll get back quicker”. “But you’re cold” you said pointedly “come on, I won’t think less of you just because you can’t handle the cold”. Wing blushed but nodded. Wing led you back inside and you smiled as he walked swiftly to the heater. The ship landed and you were transported back into the centre of Zafou. You stared up at the closed dome, now amazed by them having seen how they worked and Wing laughed grabbing your arm to stop you from falling over. “Stop staring at the sky” he smiled “it’s not a good gift if it makes you injure yourself”. “I can’t help it” you grinned “and either way it will be an amazing gift I’ll always remember!”. Wing smiled but went quiet in thought “better than Wei’s?” he asked suddenly. You paused wondering how to answer that and Wing sighed “sorry i shouldn’t have asked you that....whatever you and Wei do is between you two”. You nodded your head “it is...and honestly I just have a really good time with both of you, it’s not a competition” you added pointedly and Wing blushed “yeah I I know...but with siblings everything feels like one”. You were going to reply when you came around the corner to your home and found all your friends sat outside but there was a new edition. Wei was sat in the middle of your friends and was in the middle of a story. He stopped abruptly as soon as he saw you and smiled “y/n....and my brother”. “Hi” you smiled “what are you doing here?”. “Well he came to find you but you weren’t here” Korra answered before Wei could speak “you should really keep better track of your boys, one got lost” Korra finished and your eyes widened. “Korra i’m going to kill you” you glared but the others all just laughed. Wei blushed and stood up heading towards you. “I’m sorry I hope you weren’t waiting long?” you asked and Wei shot you a dazzling smile “it’s no problem, I was just nearby and thought i’d stop in that’s all...” before he looked at Wing “have you calmed down from earlier?”. Wing nodded “yeah, y/n helped with that”. You felt the heat rise to your cheeks as Wei tried to decipher the meaning of that. “We went for an airship ride” you clarified and Wei nodded “cute date but bet you didn’t show her the underground caverns? That’s the most beautiful place in Zafou, you have to let me take you to go see them!”. You nodded “yeah sure but can we do it tomorrow? I’m beat...you guys really know how to tire someone out”. The brothers both blushed and you smirked at how alike they were sometimes.  “Of course we’ll get out of your hair” Wing grinned “see you tomorrow y/n”. “Bye y/n” Wei echoed and you waved to them before joining your friends on the grass. “So how were your dates?” Mako asked and you rolled your eyes “ha ha very funny”. “I don’t know how you have the time for two boyfriends” Mako continued and you frowned “well didn’t have two girlfriends at one point? Surely you’d understand?”. Bolin hooted and even Asami and Korra laughed at Mako’s embarrassed expression. “Ouch, point taken I’ll shut up” Mako replied and you smiled. “As much fun as it to see you roasting Mako we have news” Korra said. You stared at her expectantly and Korra took a dramatic pause “we’re leaving tomorrow!”. “Tomorrow?” you asked “so soon?”. “Yep first thing in the morning!” Korra explained “Opal’s coming with us so there’s no reason to stay any longer”. Excitement filled you at the thought of seeing an air temple but it was bittersweet. You loved being in a metal bending city and felt like you fit in. Not to mention two men who had made your time here very enjoyable. You frowned “you couldn’t have told me earlier?”. Korra shrugged “you were gone all day!”. You sighed going inside and wrote a message to Wei and Wing. You explained the situation and asked them to meet you at the airship tomorrow morning. You had some farewells to give. 

The next morning

You paced anxiously on the launch pad as there was no sign of Wei or Wing. “I still can’t believe you told me so later Korra” you complained. “Again you were out all day, how was i meant to tell you?”. “I don’t know but you should have told me before Wei and Wing left, you knew I’d want to say goodbye to them”. Korra sighed "their sister is leaving, trust me they’ll show up”. 

The avatar had a way of being right far too often and today was no exception. Not 10 minutes after you scolded Korra Wei and Wing appeared and she shot you an *i told you so* look. You ignored her and rushed forwards “you got my note!” you cried happily and the twins nodded. “Yeah sorry we’re late we had to grab something” Wei explained waving a box he had in his hand. You nodded “well you’re here now” and the two brothers smiled. “I’ve got to admit it’s going to be weird not having you around” Wing frowned. You smiled and Wei nodded “yeah we’re going to miss you, a lot!”. You blushed and laughed “i’ll miss you both too but I mean, once the airbenders are all set up...there’s nothing to say I can’t visit? Or even you guys could come to the temple! Or the water tribe!” you said excitedly to Wing “I promise this won’t be the last you see of me”. “What a shame” Wei joked and you rolled your eyes pushing him. “You know i’m only kidding” he grinned “we will hold you to that promise y/n” he said turning very serious “if we don’t hear from you in 6-months we’re turning up at the air temple”. You laughed and smiled at them both “well I promise that won’t happen, you’ll be hard to forget”. “Well still don’t try too hard eh?” Wei asked and he leant forward to hug you. You wrapped your arms around him tightly and smiled “thanks for letting me kick your ass so much, it’s really boosted my ego”. Wei rolled his eyes but smiled “no problem” and moved away from you. Wing stepped forwards more awkwardly and hugged you more tenderly “take care and don’t let the water tribe get you down, your family sound amazing and they must be if they’re anything like you”. You smiled blushing “thanks, your family’s pretty good too” and stepped back. “Y/n you done yet?” Korra called and you waved her away. “I’m just saying everyone’s onboard apart from you...” before Lin yanked her inside. “Wow even our aunt approves?” Wei frowned and Wing nodded “wait is that a good thing?”. “I’m not sure but I really should go”. “Ow before you go we made you this” Wei said pushing the small box into your hands. You blushed and smiled at them “you did...how many times did you break out into an argument in the process?”. “I stopped counting after the thirtieth time” Wing replied and you laughed before opening the box. Inside was a necklace was an intricated metal pendant, it used various metals which were woven together using very precise bending. “Guys this is beautiful!” you cried “thank you so much, now I have something to remember this trip by”. “It’s no problem” Wei smirked and Wing nodded “we’re just glad you like it”. “I love it” you cried and hugged them both tightly. “But now I really should go...we’re creating a scene”. The brothers laughed and stepped away from you “of course, go...we’ll talk to you later”. You nodded and with a last smile walked up the runway.

Your POV

You’d worked for the Beifongs for 3 years now. You’d become a fighter like your idol Su as soon as you were old enough but had been Opal’s best friend for far longer than that. As a result you were viewed as less of an employee but more of an extended family member. Well at least by most of the Beifongs...Opal, Huan, Wei and Wing never treated you like their staff but the same couldn’t be said for the eldest Beifong. Bataar junior’s demeanour had never been warm to you but the second you became a soldier his attitude to you took a turn for the worse. He definitely stopped seeing you as a family friend and instead viewed you as someone with a duty to his family. You found it ironic considering he was dating Kuvira, the head of his mother’s guards, but Opal claimed her brother’s stupidity had no bounds. It didn’t bother you that Bataar clearly had a problem with you but it did make it awkward sometimes. Like when you were technically off duty but Bataar still wanted you to use your guard perks to reactivate the domes. You were relaxing in the living room with Opal and her siblings when Bataar had burst in demanding you go and give the orders for the domes to be activated without his mother’s return. Su had been away in republic city and was due back tonight but she hadn’t returned. Bataar was concerned at the city’s defence but rather than going to find a guard on duty he found you and gave you the demand. It would be easiest and quickest he claimed. You looked at the rain pouring down outside and frowned. You’d just worked a 10 hour shift and were looking forward to a games night followed by a very long sleep but Bataar wanted you to traipse across to the guards tower to activate something you probably didn’t need. “Ah come on Bataar leave it” Wing called and Wei nodded “yeah y/n doesn’t need to do that”. “Yes she does, have you forgotten she works for us?”. “Not for us”  Huan said sharply and you all jumped forgetting the second eldest Beifong was sat in the corner reading. 

Huan was never someone to shy away from an argument partly due to his short temper but when he did it was usually always in relation to him. Someone would question his art or hair and he’d snap back in the name of self-preservation. He never bothered with other people or their arguments which is why when he spoke up you all stared at him in shock.

"Y/n is a part of mother’s guard not yours" Huan said. He spoke softly but with a distinct and clear tone, it was impressive how he didn’t even have to raise his voice to be imposing. "Don't order her around like that" Huan finished glaring at his brother. All his siblings froze as did you and Bataar. Bataar immediately blushed as all his siblings looked at him and he coughed coming closer to Huan "i am the eldest and so in mother’s absence i can give orders to the staff". "No you can’t, you're not y/n’s boss so stop pretending you are just so you can feel important, y/n doesn't have to do anything you say". "When mother isn’t here her responsibilities....". "Are hers" Huan said standing up "you do not pay y/n’s salary, mother does. So you don’t get to tell her what to do, you want the domes putting? Do it yourself". Huan and Bataar shared at each other before finally Bataar admitted defeat to his younger brother. "Fine" he snapped "if she refuses then i will" and he grabbed his coat before slamming the door loudly. You all stared at Huan expecting him to comment or say something but he just went back to his seat in the corner. Wei, Wing and Opal all exchanged looks with you but Huan sat back down and picked up his book again as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

As soon as you retired to Opal’s bedroom to go to sleep she pounced. "Sooooo" Opal sang "now we can finally talk about what just happened?”. You’d been dreading this. Opal was your best friend and so could always tell when you were lying or embarrassed. "Huan?" you asked figuring there was no getting out of it and Opal nodded "it was insane right? I have never heard him stand up for someone like that!". You nodded your head "Bataar must really be pissing him off lately". "Yeah that could be part of it" Opal smirked and you sighed "Opal no!". Opal had this theory Huan had a soft spot for you and it had made you develop a crush on the metal bender over the years. He was so dignified and impressive the idea of him even paying attention to you...well lets just say it was a miracle Opal hadn’t realised. "Yes" Opal grinned "come on y/n that was a pretty open display of affection". "Or an open display of contempt for his brother?". "No he’s had plenty of opportunities to attack Bataar but he chose the one involving you, that’s important". You rolled your eyes "well i don’t think it does". "Well i think it does and so does Wei and Wing". "You spoke to them about it?". "Duh! As soon as you went to the bathroom". "But Opal your brothers are the biggest blabbermouths in all of Zafou! They’ll tell Huan and then it'll make things awkward and Huan will never speak to me again!". “Calm down I swore them to secrecy, they promised me they wouldn’t say anything”. You raised an eyebrow and Opal smirked “well they’ll try not to....either way it’s out of your control so shut up and go to sleep”. You sighed angrily but were indeed tired so you buried your head in the pillow “if they do i’ll blame you”. “Yeah yeah whatever go to sleep”. 

Huan’s POV

The following morning Huan found himself doing something he never did, leaving the sanctity of his workspace and going for a walk. Huan needed some inspiration and thought a trip around the grounds might help so he took a stroll around. Huan hated the outdoors and soon remembered why...other humans were there. 

"Sooo that thing last night" Wing appeared from nowhere smirking. Huan jumped as his twin brothers descended on either side of him and he frowned "what? A lot of things happened last night". "You and y/n of course" Wei grinned "so how long have you two been an item". Huan jumped "what? Me and y/n aren’t anything! What are you talking about?". "Well you defended her honour so valiantly we figured you were either dating or crushing on her". Huan glared "it’s neither, Bataar was being rude to her so i put him in his place, that was all". "See but that’s the thing" Wing said grabbing him to stop him leaving "you never do that, Opal and Kuvira bicker all the time and you never step in when both of them could do with a putting down from time to time". "Or mum, or dad or even us" Wei nodded "you always stay out of it because you’re the unbothered child who doesn’t care about anything but y/n...something about her made you speak up". Huan groaned rolling his eyes "you are reading way too much into this, why wouldn’t someone speak up for y/n, she’s been Opal’s best friend for so long she’s basically family". "But you never speak up for Opal or us come to think of it" Wing said getting angry. "So" Wei said taking over "you didn’t stand up for her because she’s Opal best friend but because you likeeee her" he grinned and Huan sighed. "Whatever" and he pushed his brothers off him "you’re crazy" but they both saw the red of his cheeks.

Your POV

"Y/n!" you heard someone scream and jumped to see Wei and Wing running up to you at the guard post where you stood. "Opal told us you’d be here" they said out of breath "we have to tell you something!". "Okay go on". "No in private" they said eyeing your co-guard with suspicion. You frowned "erm can you please scan the perimeter?". Your fellow guard nodded and Wei and Wing grabbed you "y/n you’ll never guess what....Huan likes you!". You blushed immediately "what...no he doesn’t, what are you talking about!". "We spoke to him about you and he blushed just as adorably as you" Wei teased and you glared raising a fist. "He did" Wing said intervening "albeit less tomato like but he blushed none the less". You paused "really? Well i mean he could just be embarrassed...". "Nope and we have proof" Wei smirked and you crossed your arms "ow yeah? What?". "He’s over there watching us right now" and you turned to see a figure looking out from a window.

Huan’s POV

Huan jumped from the window like he’d been scalded. His cursed brothers! Why were they determined to ruin his life. They planted the seed in his head then created a trap for him. He’d been watching you because he’d heard people yelling your name and grew worried when he realised it was his brothers. True he did carry on watching, curious at your reaction to what he knew his brothers were telling you. He was amused when your first instinct was to hit his brothers and he realised you had that in common. Huan did find you...amicable as humans went. Well more than amicable, you were one of the few people he didn’t mind being in a room with. You weren’t loud or obnoxious, you were dedicated and hard working but he’d also heard you with Opal and knew you were excitable and kind. You hadn’t even minded when Opal’s sky bison had licked you which Huan figured made you a very tolerable person. Huan had a slight smile on his face when his brothers said something and you all turned to look at him. Huan darted away from the window and flattened himself against the wall. His heart was racing and he could tell his face was bright red. Huan figured this was Wei and Wing’s (no doubt Opal was also involved) meddling way to get the two of you to interact and Huan hated how well it had worked. 

He expected you’d get curious now Wei and Wing had exposed him and he waited for you to appear for the awkward conversation but you never approached him. When by the end of the week you still hadn’t mentioned it Huan was confused. He figured you’d have believed his brothers and come to see for yourself the truth. Instead you carried on as normal and your behaviour towards him didn’t change in the slightest. Even tonight during your weekly sleepover with Opal, Huan bumped into you in the kitchen and still you said nothing. The two of you were alone, it would've been easy for you to comment on it but you didn’t. You’d just explained you were getting a snack for opal and yourself, apologised for disturbing him and left. Huan was utterly confused and also disappointed. Weren't you curious about what his brothers had said? He knew if the roles were reversed...he’d definitely be curious and even a little hopeful? 

Huan hated not knowing things so he decided to find out what was going on. You were over at their house again and were with Opal in her room. Huan waited for you to go to the bathroom before he began his interrogation of Opal. He opened her door sharply and stepped inside. "Okay we don’t have a lot of time but quickly, has y/n said anything about what Wei and Wing did earlier this week?". Opal jumped but responded quickly "no and that surprised me, she was worried Wei and Wing would harass you but when I asked her about what they said to her on guard duty she said it was fine". "Fine?" Huan asked "but they....they schemed to make me look suspicious, y/n didn’t comment on that?". Opal shook her head "no, she must’ve not bought it". "Ow" Huan frowned and Opal smiled "ow?". "I just thought....after all that trouble i’d have to talk to her about it but i guess y/n’s smart enough to not read into it". Opal’s smile grew "you could still talk to her about it, i’m sure she’d want to talk to you". Huan froze "she would, why?". "Well communication is always nice plus and she’d kill me for telling you this but she likes you". Huan frowned "she does? Why? How do you know?". "Why? I honestly don’t know" Opal smirked "but how do I know? Well i’m her best friend and for about 2 years now anytime i bring you up she pauses and goes all weird...kind of like you right now...she thinks she has me fooled but I can see right through her and she has a thing for you". "Wow...i guess you’d know being her best friend but are you 100% sure?". Opal nodded "i’m certain". Huan paused wondering how to proceed when suddenly the door opened. "Sorry i was a while, Wei was in there before me and it wasn’t pretty" before you spotted Huan and jumped "ow! Huan! Hi" you smiled politely and Huan replied just as polite and formally making Opal grin. "Huan was here for you actually, he just wanted a word about Wing and Wei so i’ll go get us some drinks and be back in like 10 minutes, okay?". But Opal didn’t give you time to reply before she was gone leaving the two of you alone.

Your POV

You and Huan stood across from each other awkwardly and you smiled “so what did you want to tell me about Wing and Wei?” "Well I just wanted to...to ask you...you’ve probably noticed they’ve been pretty excitable lately". You smiled "that’s one way to put it, downright nuisances is another". Huan smiled and nodded "i agree totally i just wanted to make sure they’re not...annoying you too much? I saw them disturb you at work earlier in the week". You laughed "they’re annoying but harmless really, rather like large puppies i just let whatever they say go in one ear and out the other, don’t worry they don’t bother me". Huan nodded unsure what else to say when you spoke again "do they bother you? I've heard they've been stalking you". Huan sighed "yes they've been my shadow for a while, nothing i can say will make them go away". You frowned in thought "i don’t know what to suggest". "I’m not asking you for a solution" Huan rushed to assure you "i was just making sure you’re okay...with them". "That’s kind of you thank you" you replied and saw Huan look down sharply. You watched him and carried on "i should probably say thank you for the other night too, for standing up to Bataar for me". Huan nodded his head but could barely met your eyes "it was nothing". "No it was really nice and kind! Coming from you as well it meant a lot". "Coming from me?" Huan asked unsure if that was a compliment and you hurried to explain "i just meant because you never really get involved in things so for you to be the one to speak up...." now you were the one struggling to meet his eyes "it meant a lot". Huan paused utterly confused how to proceed. He liked that you seemed to really like his standing up for you but had no idea how to lead that into something more. "Well i...you're a good person and my sisters best friend i...of course i’d help you". You smiled "well it was very kind thank you Huan" and rested a hand on his shoulder. Huan glanced at your hand and you removed it rapidly "sorry i forgot you don’t like touching!". "No it’s alright" Huan went to explain when there was a knock and Opal appeared "hey do you need me to come back in a bit?" she asked but Huan straightened and stepped away from you "no everything is sorted thank you. So i’ll be leaving good night" he nodded to both of you and left. You nodded to him managing not to blush and relaxed as the door closed. "Soooooo" Opal started and you sighed "don’t".

You had no idea what to make out of Huan actually seeking you out for a conversation and wondered if Opal had been right this whole time. You wished Huan would just tell you or ask you out but knew there was no way he’d do something so open or reckless. You could ask him out but you worried that you’d misinterpreted his actions and would make it awkward. Not to mention you literally worked for his family. So you decided to leave it and try not to think about it but another Beifong wasn’t thinking that way.

Huan’s POV

Even since that night Huan challenged him Bataar had been short tempered and extra rude to everyone but to Huan especially. Huan didn’t really care, he never listened to Bataar anyway but he did notice how Bataar would go out of his way to annoy his siblings in front of Huan and it was getting on his nerves. The worst times were when you were there too. Bataar seemed determined to remind everyone he was the eldest, the one with the most trust and responsibility, and did that by snapping or undermining you. It was usually just petty childish quips so Huan left it, until one night Bataar went too far. 

It was a Friday and so you were off duty and with the Beifongs like all Friday nights. Everyone was getting ready for something Varick invented called a mover that Wei and Wing managed to steal from his room. You were five minutes into said mover when the door opened flooding the room with light and ruining the projection. Everyone called out protests but Bataar just hushed them “y/n Kuvira needs you to help her with some paperwork”. “She’s off duty” Huan said automatically and you looked at him before looking back at Bataar. “I know that but this is urgent avatar business, now do you want to be a soldier or do you want to act like a child your whole life?” Bataar asked. You sighed looking at the stack of papers but stood up “you guys carry on i’ll be back as soon as I can”. Wei paused the film and Opal switched on the light “it’s okay we can wait” Wing told you and you smiled gratefully. “I'll be as quick as I can” you told them and settled at the table as Bataar threw the paperwork down pointedly. “Kuvira wants you to find a missing report from last week, it’s somewhere in all here”. “How is that crucial?” Huan asked and Bataar rolled his eyes “because that is when the red lotus broke in to Zafou and they either had help or someone dropped the ball, the report will tell us that”. “How about we all help?” Wei called and Wing nodded “yeah then we’ll find it quicker”. “Nope none of you are cleared for this only y/n” Bataar said smugly and you sighed but turned to the stacks of paper. 

An hour later you were three quarters of the way through the stack and still no report was in sight. “If it’s not in there then Kuvira has more paperwork you can look through” Bataar told you “but this was the small pile” and you could’ve sworn he smiled as he said that. “You have to be kidding?” Huan cried and Bataar turned around “why would I be kidding? Unlike all you children I actually care about Zafou. You tried to shoot Huan an *this is okay* look but weren’t sure if it correlated. “We all care about Zafou Bataar but if she hasn’t found it by now do you really think she will? The person who allowed the red lotus to break in probably disposed of it immediately or maybe it was just lost" Huan shrugged and Bataar glared. "I’m sorry brother but did i ask for your opinion?". "No hence why you’re acting so stupidly, you tend to do that unsupervised" Huan rolled his eyes. Wei laughed and Bataar glared. "Kuvira is on duty tonight and this is what she wants y/n to do urgently". "But y/n isn’t on duty so she doesn’t have to do it!" Huan said and you saw him getting angry. "Huan it’s okay" you said softly but he shook his head coming to stand next to you "no Bataar’s taking his anger with me out on you and that’s not fair". "I wonder why?" Bataar commented and Huan raised an eyebrow "what was that?". "Well you call me stupid but it’s a good tactic, messing with y/n certainly gets you riled". Wei, Wing and Opal all stared eyes wide as you and Huan turned red. Suddenly the close proximity to you didn’t seem like such a great idea anymore. Bataar laughed "pft you act like you’re so moral when you're only doing it because you clearly like her". "I...that is irrelevant" Huan muttered "you're being cruel that’s that". "No i’m not and if you were objective about her you’d realise that". "I’d do it even if i didn’t like her" Huan said flustered and Bataar grinned "even if you didn’t like her? Is that a confession?". Silence settled and Huan tensed. Bataar’s grin grew "you said you’d do it even if you didn’t like her so that means...". "Shut up Bataar" Huan glared and Bataar laughed "i mean i get it i’d be annoyed too, it must be embarrassing knowing she doesn’t like you back...rather humiliating I suppose". Bataar went to speak again but you cut him off "who says i don’t like him back?". Bataar froze "what?". You were usually so quiet he didn’t think even if you did like Huan you’d admit it in a room full of people but Bataar had underestimated you. "You said it’s embarrassing because i don’t return Huan’s feelings but you're wrong i do like him, a lot...you're the only embarrassing person here”. Wing and Wei laughed and Bataar paled "I...you're both welcome to each other” and he stormed away. "Y/n that was great!" Opal called and Wei, Wing and Opal all flocked around you before you caught sight of Huan. He was staring at you but looked away when you looked at him. "We should...." Wei started and Wing and Opal nodded "yeah we'll be going...".

The door shut loudly and you and Huan looked at one another. "So..." you started as Huan also went to speak. You both apologised and told the other to go first. When that happened a second time you sighed "okay i’ll go first! So what you said to Bataar did you....did you mean that?". Huan nodded "did you? Or were you just saying it to shut him up?". "No i meant it" you smiled and Huan blushed "ow that’s...unexpected". "I don’t think it is considering Opal told you I liked you". Huan jumped "how do you know?". "Ow come on, as soon as i walked into the room to find you both whispering together i knew she'd sold me out". "Why didn’t you say anything if you knew?" Huan asked and you shrugged "i could ask you the same thing". Huan smiled softly "that’s fair I....I guess I was worried...Opal said she was sure but i...i didn’t want to ruin anything if you didn’t like me". You smiled as Huan’s reasons mirrored your own and you stepped forward "well i do like you so there's no worry there". Huan nodded his head, his eyes darted around the room nervously before they settled on you “well in that case...would you like to date me?” Huan cringed as he said it “god I sound pathetic”. You laughed “trust me you don’t, i’d very much like to date you”. Huan grinned brightly in response and you laughed at the reaction “that’s...” Huan reached for you when suddenly the door was pushed open. “Look we know we should give you more time but it’s getting late and we really want to see the mover” Wei pouted and you laughed as Huan blushed “fine come in” he called rolling his eyes but he smiled when you looked at him. Opal, Wei and Wing took the sofa nearest the door leaving the other one for you and Huan. You sat down together and Huan laced his hand through yours. You ignored the stifled laughter coming from the other sofa and sighed in relief when the lights switched off and the movie began. 

The sofa you and Huan were on was smaller and so you were forced to sit pretty close together but you didn’t mind. You were surprised though when Huan shifted his arm around you. Huan never initiated contact with anyone and so this was a pretty huge deal for him. “You looked cold” he said when you glanced at him but you saw by the blush on his cheek that was just an excuse. You smiled and leant into him “that was a poor excuse Beifong”. Huan chuckled softly and you smiled up at him. “Hey keep it PG over there guys, some of us over here are still innocent little angels” Wei called and Huan rolled his eyes throwing a cushion at his face. “I’m really sorry about them” Huan whispered to you when their laughter died down and you smirked “it’s fine, just ignore them and focus on me”. Huan nodded his head “well that won’t be hard...” and you blushed at Huan’s tone. You and Huan stayed wrapped together for the duration of the mover and when it finished Huan led you to Opal’s room. “So I was thinking we could go on a date tomorrow if it’s not too soon?” Huan asked and you grinned “Not at all! What did you have in mind?”. “Well I know you always wake up early due to working shifts and they’ve just started planting in the gardens with summer on the way, so I thought we could walk around the grounds before anyone is awake and watch the sunrise?....or something”. You grinned “you can tell you’re an artist”. “Why is it a stupid idea?”. “No it’s lovely,” you said quickly “you’ve just planned a very beautiful date, it sounds lovely”. Huan blushed looking down before glancing up at you “glad you like it, so I’ll meet you here tomorrow morning?”. “It’s a date” you agreed and smiled as Huan blushed. “See you tomorrow then” you smiled and kissed Huan softly on the cheek. Huan froze as you touched him and turned an even deeper shade of red. “Kiss you...I mean see you tomorrow” Huan babbled before walking away and you smiled at how dazed he seemed from something as simple as a kiss. He bumped into Opal as he passed her and Opal frowned as she came to stand infront of you “do I even want to know what you did to give my brother that goofy look?”. “Probably not” you agreed and Opal sighed “this is going to be odd but a good odd, you and Huan are perfect for each other”. “I hope so” you sighed following Opal into her room “I really like him”. “Well as tonight proved he really likes you too....our sleepover days are numbered” Opal cried dramatically “soon you’ll be having sleepovers with Huan” and you threw a pillow at her. “Stop that”. “What it’s true!” Opal grinned “the only upside is we’ll be sisters officially soon”. “Me and Huan literally haven’t been on a date yet!” you cried and Opal shook her head laughing. “It’s sweet you think that y/n but you’ve basically been pre-dating for years, you and Huan care a lot more about each than first date level”. You blushed at the truth of Opal’s words and looked down “can we just go to sleep?”. Opal took pity on you and nodded. You both got ready for bed and finally you closed your eyes ready to go to sleep. “Don’t hit me but I just wanted to say, joking aside I’m really happy for you and Huan, I love you both and can’t think of anyone better for either of you”. You blushed and squeeed Opal’s hand “thanks Opal that’s really sweet”. Opal grinned at you before smiling “okay now I promise I’ll shut up” and with a fond smile you turned away and closed your eyes again ready to try and sleep. With your date with Huan on the horizon, Opal’s sweet words and the day's events in your mind, you fell asleep with a large smile on your face.
