Having watched the new Avatar movie, I had a thought the other day of how Aang and Katara probably always had Tagah in the back of their minds when it came to raising Tenzin, and mostly regarding the harsh reality of how to reckon with the feeling of knowing that every other Airbender was slaughtered at the hands of other nations. To not become lost in that grief even if the anger is highly justified, and to forgive oneself for not being able to do it all and stop it all on your own.
But then, as well, the wonderful new aspects and possibilities of airbending, Aang teaching Tenzin how to fly in pairs by bending air around eachother, I bet it was so cathartic for Aang to finally be able to do that again. Being able to articulate that even without their people there physically, they’ll always be intrinsic to their element and their lives in the wind.
I have. Many thoughts about how the Cloudbabies grew up, specifically Tenzin in this instance.
Although I’m more into f/f ships, Aang/Tenzin & Aang/Bumi ii are pretty cute Aang being a big softy reassuring them every minute and asking if he’s going too hard and them being so done with it “Dad please just go faster”
Bumi ii/Tenzin is definitely more messier and exploratory and just boys being boys
You know, Katara is the woman who spent her adolescence confronting patriarchal limitations and standing up to men who thought their authority, tradition, age, or institutional status entitled them to define what women should do. We also repeatedly see her responding very sensitively and with force to coercion and power imbalances; she literally starts a prison riot in Book One! Then, her forty-ish son, who carries enormous religious and institutional authority, leaves his long-term partner, an age-peer, and knocks up a 24-year-old Air Acolyte devotee?
How come Katara didn't look at Tenzin and went, "The Fuck? Is that how I raised you?"
I desperately want the missing conversation with Katara because the Katara I got to know in ATLA is absolutely the woman who asks him questions he evidently and desperately needs somebody to ask:
"Tenzin, she is a member of the religious community you lead. You understand that her approaching you doesn't remove your responsibility here? You understand what being Angs's son means to an Air Acolyte? And what exactly happened with Lin? Did you two spend twenty years avoiding a conversation about children until somebody younger offered you her uterus? You are forty years old. You have life experience. You have institutional and social power and standing. You had a long-term relationship. Do you understand what you are committing her to? Yes, I know she pursued you. That doesn't absolve you from obligations and responsibilities. What happens to her relationship with Air Temple Island if she leaves the man who heads the community after she had her children? Do you know what pressure you put on her uterus? I do."

WIP Ask Game: #1 and 4 please
꩜ wip ask game ꩜
1. share a snippet of your choice from a wip
Tenzin never would believe it when Zoltan said he could see the heat waves over his head. He’d nearly pushed Zolt into the bay one day when they were out walking and Zolt pointed out the way they both could see the heat rising from the black walkway. But right now, Tenzin’s head looked hot enough to cook an egg.
4. share your favorite line of dialogue from a wip
Side note: this is a fascinating way to find out how little dialogue I've written lately. Nevertheless:
“Baatar? What’s going on?” “She hasn’t told you, then.” His voice was so dejected, so unsurprised. Concerned, yet still focused on her patients, Kya replied, “No, she hasn’t. What’s going on?” “Tell her things are moving fast. If she’s going to come, she can’t delay any longer.” Kya felt her blood run cold.
Another fun game! Thanks, @wingchunwaterbender for the ask!
All the emotions coming out from the cloud babies, guilt, anger, stress and anxiety.
Tenzin wants to be a great air bender but feels like he won’t live up to his dads expectations, is terrified of being the only one like his dad, wants to participate in his mother’s culture more, and is secretly jealous of his siblings freedom and is ashamed that his temperament is more of his mother’s because hes supposed to be in control. To be untethered, to be free. Nearly untouchable.
But he’ll push those things aside and he’ll focus, he’ll get better. He will be a great air bender. He will not let it all die out. Even if that means sacrificing himself over and over again. Even if it means letting the water tribe fade away from him.
He won’t just fulfill his father’s legacy, he’ll secure it.
Kya ii feels guilty, she did not sacrifice anything. She is master Katara’s daughter, yet she is not fearless like her. She is a true free spirit, much like an air nomad. She avoids confrontation when she can.
She accepts her role as a middle child, sometimes a cool mediator for her brother’s complicated relationship. She understands the strain of being a bender and having impossible expectations but she also understands what it’s like to not be quite enough for anyone. She loves her brothers, but she pity’s them for they do not see how similar they are. And sometimes when no one’s around she too feels the sting of jealousy like Bumi does.
If she cannot please anyone, then she will not. She moves through the world lighter than air. And no one can say they saw her, cause who knows her name? It’ll be like she was never there.
Bumi is air. He is light, joyful and energetic. He has a great thirst to prove himself in everything he does. He loves his family very much. He jokes around with his cousins and friends. He tries to guide his younger siblings in a way that makes them feel more at ease.
He is not blind he sees tenzin exactly for what he is. So he doesn’t push he sees the weight of world on his shoulders. It’s a terrible odd feeling being an older brother. To love another so much and yet hate to see what they have. He’s felt it around Kya too. He swallows it. He continues to be that joyful boy who jokes, but as he gets older he feels the bitterness spreading through his body.
It’s probably childish. And he looks at his father and his mother, how hard they work. Who’s he to complain? And he hates a part of himself. The part that desperately wants to ease his parents burdens. If only he were a bender. And he’s angry at his father and solemn with his mother.
He knows the three of them weren’t enough for Aang, she knows it too. Aang loves them. And They are not enough. These two things exist together simultaneously.
Tenzin could be enough, but he’s hanging on by a thread. And No matter how happy they make him, they can’t ever make him as happy as he was when he had them.
