Thoughts about Yolda being Agito’s mom and how unique I find her position in all that.
What I noticed and what I find interesting in terms of subversion of the usual parent dynamics with gender, is that Yolda is never shamed for not raising Agito nor for not telling Agito she’s his mom. Since this isn’t remarked upon at all in the film, i’m referring to the novelization with this point. Though nothing in the film contradicts this idea.
Agashi raised Agito, while Yolda became the city’s representative and effectively it’s leader. Agashi and Yolda at the time of the movie’s events, are living separately on relatively good terms and not showed to be married or divorced. Agito states Hajan and Yolda come to Agashi for advice regularly.
It is not clear if Agito was an accidental pregnancy or deliberate but both Agashi and Yolda deeply love him. Agashi is extremely proud of his son, and Yolda even remarks on how much like Agashi Agito has become.
“In every way, even his smallest mannerisms. He is his father’s son. Agashi….” - Yolda after saving Agito from the train crash and teaching him how to control his plant transformations. By this she is expressing feeling distant from her son, but she doesn’t then reveal the truth to him and is never shamed for that.
All in all, I don’t think I ever see this sort of parent dynamic otherwise in media. Where the mom is not narratively punished for not being the mom role that society usually expects. For not raising her son and instead choosing to be a community leader. It is true that one could be both a parent and a community leader, but it is not stated why Yolda chose to do things this way. Yolda’s role as representative of Neutral City is clearly where she wants to be, and she’s still caring for Agito from the sidelines, as a wise mentor figure. Likewise, Agashi as a single dad is never shown as a problem that needs solving. And they both have super strength and helped to built a whole city!
All this next to the very typical married with kids situation of Hajan’s family. Which is never used against Yolda or Agashi for the way their situation differs. Agito doesn’t ever seem bothered by not having a mom. His dad is his parent.
In the theater guide, the novel and the artbook, Agito sees Cain like a brother and he’s a childhood friend, so it is also possible Agito sees Hajan as another parent.
Which leads me to say that the nuclear family may very likely not be the norm in Neutral City. Which I definitely go with that in my own fan interpretations already but still. Very punk rock of them.
This leads me to assume that relationship dynamics are more casual, everything that is shown in Neutral City isn’t in conflict with queer couples or polyamory being normalized there, even if we don’t see it. Marriage is a thing that exists, as mentioned by Minka and Cain. But it is clearly not the only option. This fluidity, this casual, everyone is welcome atmosphere, as we see when Yolda tells Toola she is free to stay or go. It doesn’t feel like a stretch to say this is a place where queerness is normalized.
And that is without even getting into that the people of Neutral City are effectively refugees, or the Agito trans allegory and the fact that Ragna sees becoming Enhanced as a transgressive act. Which would absolutely extend to Agashi, Hajan and Yolda, and all the people in Neutral City who chose to live near the Forest.
“Ben düşünmekten yoruldum, benim yerime de düşünür müsün? İlgilenir misin insanlarla, yalanla, yalnızlıkla? Geceleri birdenbire bastıran sağanak yağışlı korkuları alır mısın yamacımdan? Gündüz gözüyle sevemiyorum kimseyi. Yüreğimdeki bu düğümü çözebilir misin?"
- Jack Kerouac - Yolda
