There has been much speculation about the most likely identity of the original plant. From traditional Ayurveda and Siddha medicine practitioners and Somayajna ritualists undoubtedly use “Somalata” (Sarcostemma acidum).

Non-Indian researchers have proposed candidates including Amanita muscaria also known as Fly agaric, Psilocybe cubensis also known as Magic mushroom, Peganum harmala and Ephedra sinica. 

According to recent philological and archaeological studies, and in addition, direct preparation instructions confirm in the Rig Vedic Hymns at Vedic period, ancient Soma most likely consisted of Poppy, Phaedra/Ephedra and Cannabis.

Simply put, opium/morphine, magic mushroom and marijuana were included.

As stated in Rigveda hymns, soma drink used to be made from a juice that was taken from a plant stem and mixed with cow’s milk, butter & some wheat flour. It was the main offering in Vedic rituals and frequently held ceremonies with feasts & drinking soma. Soma was a panacea and alleged to be sweet-tasting……“We have drunk soma and become immortal: we have attained the light and discovered the Gods.

元来、ソーマ酒のレシピに使用されていた植物の正体については、これまでに多くの推論が成されてきた。

揺ぎないインドの伝統として古代より延々と続いている、アーユルヴェーダ、シッダ医学、またソマヤジュニャ・ベーダの犠牲祭では、間違いなく東インドのつる草、サクロステーマアシダムを使う。

インド国外の研究者たちは、ベニテングダケ、ペガヌム・ハルマラ、シナマオウなどを提案している。最近の文献学的また考古学的研究によると、ヴェーダ期のリグヴェーダ賛歌に書かれている古代ソーマのレシピそのものには、ほぼ間違いなく、ケシ、シナマオウ、そしてカナビス等も含まれていたことが確認されている。

シンブルな言い方をすれば、マジックマッシュルーム、モルヒネやヘロインの原料となるアヘン、そしてマリファナ等が含まれていたことになる。

リグ・ヴェーダ賛歌には、ソーマ酒は、ソーマなる植物の茎から採った液と牛乳、バター、麦粉を混ぜて造ると、記載され、ヴェーダ祭祀の最も主要な供物であった。このソーマ酒を供える祭祀が盛んに行われ宴も盛大で、飲食も盛んだった。蜜のように甘く、万病の薬とされていた。
