Characters of a theatrical performance shown here in a large Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368 CE) mural in a hall (明应王殿) of the Guangsheng Temple (广胜寺) in Hongtong county (洪洞県), Shanxi province, c. 1324. Scanned from Patricia Ebrey's Cambridge Illustrated of China (1999) The origins of theatre in China can be traced back to the Shang dynasty. Oracle bone inscriptions mention ritual rain dances performed by shamans, while the Book of Documents refers to shamanistic singing and dancing. By the time of the Zhou dynasty, theatrical and ritual performances had become more developed. Evidence from the Chu Ci suggests that shamans in the State of Chu performed with music and elaborate costumes during the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. Some scholars also believe that poems from the Classic of Poetry may have served as lyrics for songs accompanying court dances in the early Zhou period.
During the Song dynasty, Chinese theatre evolved into a more structured form of musical drama, and by the 12th century the term xìqǔ (Chinese opera) came into use. Its development was influenced by Buddhist bianwen storytelling traditions, which blended speech and song and inspired early dramatic works such as Romance of the Western Chamber. In the Southern Song, nanxi theatre emerged in Wenzhou, featuring full narratives, dialogue, and songs, while specialized role types such as Dan (female), Sheng (male), Jing, and Chou became established. At the same time, zaju developed as a smaller comic theatrical form during the Song and Jin dynasty.
Under the Yuan dynasty, zaju became the dominant theatrical form in major cities such as Kaifeng, Luoyang, and Hangzhou. Yuan zaju developed into a sophisticated dramatic style with multiple acts, music, and clearly defined character roles. This period also produced some of China’s greatest playwrights, including Guan Hanqing, Wang Shifu, and Ma Zhiyuan, whose works became classics of Chinese literature.
