TASKMASTER (2015-; 6.04)
– I’ve got some tattoos, you may have noticed. – Yeah. – Beards, petrol, Clarkson, and Top Gear. So, what’s your problem? – I was thinking... – Don’t listen to your mum!
Widow’s Bay is one of those shows that somehow seems to be flying under the radar, which is honestly a little rude.
Because this thing is fun.
Not in a loud, desperate “please notice how quirky we are” way. More in a foggy little coastal-nightmare way, where old island lore, cursed town history, haunted inns, sea hags, suspicious fog, and deeply strange local government all somehow belong in the same sentence.
And the weird part is, it works.
The show manages to be funny without turning the horror into a joke. It doesn’t feel like a spoof. It feels like a genuinely spooky story that just happens to be full of people saying completely unhinged things with total administrative confidence.
That might be my favorite part.
Matthew Rhys is fantastic as Tom Loftis, a skeptical mayor trying very hard to stay rational while the island keeps politely destroying his worldview. He has this exhausted, irritated, “I cannot believe this is my job” energy that fits the whole thing perfectly.
And then there’s the town itself.
The city hall weirdos. The local legends. The suspicious events. The tiny background details. The kind of signs, headlines, maps, and odd little visual jokes that make you pause and zoom in like a perfectly well-adjusted adult.
All these little quirks create such a specific vibe.
A bit of Jaws. A bit of Midnight Mass. A bit of Twin Peaks. A bit of Stephen King weirdness in a damp sweater.
But it also has its own thing going on. Cozy coastal horror mixed with dry comedy and small-town paranoia.
It’s strange. It’s spooky. It’s oddly funny. And it’s way more entertaining than people seem to realize.
So yes, Widow’s Bay deserves more love.
Preferably before the island wakes up and takes the lack of attention personally.

sokka wasn’t the comic relief… he was actually the only one with a functioning brain cell and that’s why he was suffering
Like bro… everyone in the gaang had magic powers, destiny, trauma arcs, ancient spiritual connections — and Sokka was just there with a boomerang and raw anxiety trying to keep everyone alive 😭
He’s out here making the plans, doing the math, inventing submarines, building hot air balloons, and babysitting like 4 emotionally unstable teens while running on 2 hours of sleep and sarcasm.
And the WILDEST part?? He still manages to be funny while literally holding the entire group together with duct tape, hope, and his last remaining neuron.
Sokka didn’t choose the genius-strategist life… the universe forced it on him because NO ONE ELSE was doing the mental labor 😭
Just finished watching Pluribus episode 7. I am really triggered by the way people have been perceiving Carol. I do believe she is a white woman who centered herself in conversations with the English-speaking survivors, but she is still a victim.
I don't believe a person would have a choice to join the hivemind. I envision joining the hivemind as getting infected and having body spasms as you get thrown into the consciousness of the world. If you do believe joining the hivemind is a choice, walk with me. You get infected, you are told you have a choice to join them, you immediately get thrown into the consciousness of the hive mind, and you, still in the hive mind, choose to stay. That isn't a choice.
Also, the hivemind is very intentional. They have wants. The hivemind told Carol they wanted space. She was isolated for 35 days, grieving, and attempted. They purposely stonewalled her (a common abuse tactic) until she submitted or killed herself. They didn't care if she died. Can't kill, but there are loopholes. The hive mind is not benevolent.
Quick Review: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S01E05 - "In the Name of the Mother"
"I need good men, Ser Duncan."
Flashback. Young Dunk. Post-Blackfyre rebellion. Flea Bottom. Naive. Rafe. Arlan. Additional material that is not in the book canon.
Fight. Dirty. Brutal. Visceral. Completely one-sided. For sure, while Aerion the prince had been training with the best swords in Westeros, Dunk the lunk had been playing squire for a drunkard. For a moment, there was a whew, this is a GOT show alright...
Game Of Thrones. Yep, it is a GOT show afterall. No good man goes unpunished 😭 One detail I would have added: Dunk crying more dramatically I am sorry, I am sorry at both deaths in the episode, instead of just at the end. Indicative of a man who is forever feeling responsible for the people around him.
End. Bertie Carvel plays an excellent Baelor Breakspear Targaryen. His mild manners and speech, I love him. I have to hand it to the writers. They managed to land every episode on an emotional high. Bravo 😭Best of the best 👍
