The first day at Midtown High had been one long headache for Peter Parker.

Not because of the classes.

Not because of the homework.

Because of Flash Thompson, Harry Osborn, and Gwen Stacy.

The three of them had spent the entire morning acting like they owned the school.

Flash swaggered down the hallway like a movie star. Harry smirked beside him, eager to laugh at every joke. Gwen leaned against a locker, arms folded, watching the proceedings with an expression that suggested she found the whole thing amusing.

Then came lunchtime. Peter quietly sat at a table with a sandwich and a science magazine. Flash immediately spotted him. "Hey, Parker!" Flash called. "Reading another one of your nerd books? What are you studying this time? How to talk to human beings?"

Harry nearly choked laughing. Gwen smirked. Peter slowly lowered his magazine. "Actually," he said, "it's an article about primitive life forms." Flash grinned. "Then why aren't you taking notes on us?" "Oh, I am."

Harry blinked.

Flash frowned.

Peter continued.

"The article says some organisms survive by making lots of noise and hoping nobody notices they aren't very useful." Several students nearby snorted. Flash's grin vanished. "What's that supposed to mean?" Peter folded his magazine. "It means you're basically the scientific equivalent of a peacock with a concussion."

The table erupted with laughter.

Harry looked horrified.

Gwen raised an eyebrow.

Flash stepped forward.

"You got a lot of nerve, Parker." Peter stood up.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't scared.

He simply looked tired.

"Flash, you've spent all morning telling everyone how great you are." "Because I am." "Really?" "Yeah." Peter nodded thoughtfully. "Interesting." "What's interesting?" "Well, usually when somebody's important, other people say it for them."

A chorus of "Ooooh!" echoed through the cafeteria. Harry's face turned red. Gwen bit her lip to keep from laughing. Flash pointed accusingly. "You think you're better than me?" Peter shrugged. "No. That's the funny thing." "What?" "I don't spend nearly enough time thinking about you." The surrounding students burst out laughing again. Flash opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

Nothing came out.

Harry jumped in. "Well, at least Flash isn't some weird loner." Peter looked at him. "Harry, you agree with everything Flash says." "So?" "So if Flash jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, you'd ask if there was room for two." Even louder laughter. Harry looked as though he desperately wanted the floor to swallow him.

Gwen finally pushed herself away from the locker. "Alright, Parker. You seem pretty confident today." Peter smiled politely. "Not really." "No?"

"No. I just got tired of people acting like they're the cocks of the freaking walk." "So what?" Flash retorted. This made Peter grin. "It means some people think being loud makes them important when in truth, all you really know how to do is blow smoke...and not from your ears."
