Here's why: Resistance training in the weight room will help make your athletes faster, adding resistance to speed training and sport skills greatly disrupts coordination and the basic mechanisms cease to function as expected, especially with developmental athletes. In the case of sprinting, when these athletes add some sort of resistance it becomes impossible to reuse the energy generated during each foot contact. Sprinting then is no longer reactive, but rather the athlete will have to propel his body forward during each push-off causing their running technique to deteriorate. The hamstrings will work less, while the quads will be required to work more. The athlete’s horizon will change unfavorably, not only deteriorating their coordination, but putting the athlete in a position for potential injury. For sport skills, tasks like passing a football or shooting a basketball under duress are manifested from an athlete’s performance traits - strength, power, and speed. Resistance toys added in an attempt to enhance these only fuck up the most crucial trait that binds them all: coordination! Athletes need a high level of coordination to enhance the ability of executing their sports task(s) at full speed and remain under control in a chaotic environment. Although to the untrained eye, this may not appear to differ from sprinting, basketball, or any sport skill, an unfavorable technique can still be provoked when resistance is added. For this reason, inexperienced athletes and coaches should avoid these tools in training completely. Some sport coaches or new trainers can be fooled with how easily the athletes become exhausted when using large overload, and fail to understand that this type of training will not empower their athlete’s performance.
