The Tim/Steph breakup fic nobody asked for is finished. Find the final chapter here. Chapter 1 here.
With a rattling breath, he looked to the sky and searched for some resolve. Above his high collar, the sun picked out the fine hairs on his throat and made a golden scythe of his jaw. He looks like a painting , she thought. Not unbeautiful, stunning in fact, but distant. Uncanny. So very different from the Tim at the diner who was all smiles and boyish uncertainty. An act. An act just like hers. He'd been swimming upstream too. What he wouldn't do to save face. What happened to the kid who made mistakes and stood up again? Gone. Lost in time somewhere. She reaslied again how much he terrified her. That among them all, he was the foregone conclusion: their Periclean vassal and the boy most ready to die for this awful precious place. Sometimes the way Bruce looked at Tim, it was like he wished it would just happen already. And Tim… She did wonder sometimes. “I just… I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t this.” He held up the edge of his cape by way of illustration. “My whole life has been this.” He looked at her, panicked somewhat; like he was just realising it all for the first time. “My whole life, Steph.” She held his gaze and nodded. She got it. She did.
God love me I’ve posted chapter two.
Tim licked his lips. His empty bottle crinkled in his hand. There was a darkening of his expression. “You spoke to Steph,” he said. Accused. Too damn smart. Dick sighed and watched Tim pivot away; his hands thrown up in an overly vicious what-the-fuck. “Tim,” he soothed, eager to temper whatever fire this was before it had time to gather oxygen. “She was upset.” “News to me,” Tim said. Dick levelled him with a patient stare, trying to decant the disappointment out of it, and shook his head once. “It shouldn’t be.”
