A telepath being unable to trust would be rather horrifying.
You hear and feel everything in everyone elseās heads, all the good and the bad, and humans have a long memory for wounding.
You can choose to focus on the good or the bad. If youāre lucky, youāre able to focus on the good. If notā¦
Well.
Imagine your ability to trust is damaged, and all you can hear from everyone is the untruths and insincerities everyone trades all day, every day.
You know when people are faking. You know when theyāre lying. You know what theyāre lying about. You know their meanest thoughts, their worst moments, their deepest hurts, their selfishness, their anger, their hatred. Youāre surrounded by it. You canāt escape. You canāt forget.
And youāre just hurt enough to not even want to try.
Crawling out of that would be so hard.
Mad respect to Charles Xavier for even trying.
A fic made me think of this, but video chats and calls would be so horrible for telepaths actually, the way there SHOULD be a mind, but isn't. The way conversations might get misinterpreted just because the telepath cannot feel anything from your mind.
You know, as cool as it is to see telepaths who are able to use that ability to expertly navigate social situations, I wish we saw more socially awkward telepaths. Give me telepaths who get confused when someone's words don't match the thoughts and emotions they sense from them. Give me telepaths who accidentally startle non-telepaths by responding to things they never said out loud. Give me telepaths who are so used to just sensing someone else's emotions that they don't know how to control their own tone and other nonverbal cues because those just... don't really exist in their society. Give me telepaths that overcompensate for this by over-acting what they think these emotions are supposed to look like to non-telepaths. Give me telepaths that accidentally kill the vibe by casually mentioning some deep-seated emotion a non-telepath thought they were doing a good job of hiding. GIVE ME AWKWARD TELEPATHS PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Hey, so⦠anybody else think that telepathic/empathetic characters should be more prone to mental illness? Because the fact that theyāre experiencing not only their own thoughts and emotions, but also that of other people as well?
Furthermore! Do you think that they can ācatchā mental illnesses the same way that physical illness can be caught?
Like, imagine a Betazoid whose best friend has depression. Obviously they would spend a lot of time in close proximity with this person, and when theyāre together obviously the Betazoid is going to be feeling their friendās emotions!
But eventually they start feeling that way more and more, even when they arenāt together, and initially they think itās just because their friend is struggling and theyāre sad about it. But eventually they feel depressed all the time, and thenā congrats! They caught depression!
(Oh that would be horrible, wouldnāt it? Like imagine being the friend who accidentally gave your buddy depression just by being around. Thatād just mess with your head even more, wouldnāt it?)
Or like imagine itās a Jedi around someone with anxiety. They just start spiraling and canāt stop and they donāt know what theyāre panicking about! So theyāre trying to both release their own emotions into the Force and calm the other person at the same time!
(Kaāra all it takes is one (1) Jedi with anxiety or OCD or PTSD or something to cripple like. Half the Order. No wonder they care so much about releasing emotions. This is, of course, a joke. No Jedi hate here, please.)
Or like, youāre a superhero like Martian Manhunter or Jean Grey or whoever. Imagine trying to rescue someone from a burning building or a hostage situation or something and youāre just trying to focus but the person youāre trying to save is having a PTSD episode so youāre getting flashes of their prior trauma and⦠well, you might have secondhand trauma now.
Or maybe the telepath/empath experienced a traumatic event with their whole team or just a bunch of other people in general, so you experience the event in (insert however many) other ways all at the same time. If theyāre friends or coworkers or teammates, or just people you have to deal with semi-regularly, you have to contend with not only your own memories of the event but also the othersā trauma responses as well.
Experiencing other peopleās emotions should have consequences! Consequences outside of the privacy thing!
