What is the Sixth Schedule and why is Sonam Wangchuk protesting for it?
Since there clearly is a lot of misinformation about the entire protest, here are some facts with sources.
Sonam Wangchuk has actually been in the headlines since the past few years, as a matter of fact he has gone on a hunger strike every year but one of the MAIN reasons behind all of them is the demand for Sixth schedule for Ladakh.
The Sixth Schedule is a highly SPECIFIC constitutional mechanism explicitly restricted by Article 244(2) to tribal-majority regions in only four northeastern states: Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Because Ladakh is a Union Territory outside that region, extending it there requires a complex constitutional amendment.
But this is not where it ends.
Ladakh's unique terrain, specifically regions like the Puga and Pangong fields and the Indus Suture Zone, contains crucial elements like lithium, boron, copper, tungsten, and rare-earth traces. These are the exact critical minerals needed to build semiconductors (microchips), electric vehicles, and defense equipment.
China is aggressively extracting these identical resources just across the border on the Tibetan Plateau. If India grants the Sixth Schedule, local Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) gain full legislative veto power over land use and mining.
Because local groups fiercely oppose heavy industry, this would effectively lock India out of its own strategic tech supply chain, leaving the country dependent on imports while China surges ahead.
Ironically, the exact same crowd demanding the Sixth Schedule will later complain, "Why is India lagging behind while China develops its semiconductor industry at lightning speed?
India needs a middle ground, safeguard local culture without permanently locking away the strategic resources our national tech sovereignty relies on.

Yesterday, their spokesperson Vijeta Dhaiya seen at MC Donald's gobbling up burgers, nowhere near the protest btw. When he was asked about his whereabouts by the SAME protestors, he refused to answer. Their other three spokesperson were having meeting with Nadda the ENTIRE time.
Mind you Delhi Police repeatedly said they have NOT asked for any permission for the protest
So who suffered in the end???
