On July 8, 1647, Frances Stuart was born. Celebrated for her extraordinary beauty, she became one of the most admired figures at the court of Charles II of England during the Restoration era. Known as “La Belle Stuart,” she captivated society and was a favorite subject of artists and courtiers.

On July 24, 1689, Prince William, Duke of Gloucester, was born at Hampton Court Palace. He was the son of Anne, Queen of Great Britain and Prince George of Denmark, and his birth brought great hope to the Protestant succession of England during a time of political uncertainty.

As the only surviving child of Queen Anne, William became an important figure in the future of the monarchy. He was created Duke of Gloucester shortly after his birth and received a careful education designed to prepare him for a possible future as king. His survival was seen as vital because many feared a return of the Catholic Stuart line.

Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of King James VI of Scotland and I of England, became one of Europe's most famous—and most unfortunate—queens. In 1613, she married Frederick V, Elector Palatine, a leading Protestant prince in the Holy Roman Empire. Their marriage was celebrated across Europe as a powerful Protestant alliance, but their fortunes would soon take a dramatic turn.

In 1619, Frederick accepted the crown of Bohemia after Protestant nobles rebelled against the Catholic Habsburg emperor. His reign lasted only a single winter before he was defeated at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. Forced into exile, Frederick and Elizabeth fled to the Dutch Republic, earning the enduring nicknames "The Winter King" and "The Winter Queen." Although the title was intended as a mockery, Elizabeth remained a resilient and influential figure throughout her long exile.

On July 4, 1688, King James II of England formally created his infant son, James Francis Edward Stuart, as Prince of Wales. The birth of the child just weeks earlier in June had already shaken the English court, confirming a Catholic male heir to a Protestant kingdom and intensifying fears among many English political elites and Protestant factions.

The timing could hardly have been more explosive. James II’s reign was already strained by accusations of Catholic favoritism and authoritarian rule, and the arrival of a male Catholic heir meant that his Protestant daughters from his first marriage were displaced in the succession. For many observers, this shift made a Catholic dynasty appear permanent rather than temporary.

On June 28, 1692, Louisa Maria Stuart was born at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France, far from the throne her family had lost. She was the youngest child of the deposed Catholic King James II of England and Mary of Modena, born four years after the Glorious Revolution forced her father into exile.

Known as the “Little Princess,” Louisa Maria became a symbol of hope for the Jacobite movement, which sought to restore the Stuart dynasty to the British throne. Although she never ruled, her birth gave supporters of the exiled Stuarts a living connection to the royal line.

Raised at the French court, Louisa Maria remained loyal to the Stuart cause throughout her life. Her existence represented the continuing struggle between the supporters of the deposed Catholic monarchy and the new Protestant order established in England.

On June 27, 1583, a major turning point in Scottish history took place when the young James VI of Scotland escaped the control of the Ruthven Raiders. Since the previous year, powerful Protestant nobles had held James under their influence after the Ruthven Raid, attempting to control the Scottish government through the young king.

At just 17 years old, James managed to free himself from their custody and regain personal authority over his kingdom. The escape marked the beginning of his move toward independent rule and allowed him to strengthen royal power in Scotland.
