Petronilla of Aragon: The Queen Who Strengthened the Crown of Aragon
Born on June 29, 1136, Petronilla of Aragon became one of the most important figures in medieval Iberian history. She was the daughter of King Ramiro II of Aragon and Agnes of Aquitaine. Her birth secured the continuation of the Aragonese royal line during a period of political uncertainty.
Petronilla’s life was shaped by a historic marriage alliance with Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, arranged when she was still a child. Their union in 1137 helped create the foundation of the Crown of Aragon, joining the Kingdom of Aragon with the County of Barcelona and creating a powerful Mediterranean realm.
Although Petronilla rarely ruled directly, her inheritance and marriage played a crucial role in the rise of Aragonese power. She was the mother of Alfonso II of Aragon, the first king to rule the united Crown of Aragon, whose dynasty would later become a major force in European and Mediterranean politics.
