I love #warchalstrings Warchal “Amber” and currently trying their “Timbre” strings. I purchased these strings a while back and when I took them out, the silver wound D and G strings were totally black with oxidation! No worries - some super fine steel wool did the trick of removing the rust! 1) Not the best picture but if you look closely you can see the clean G string together with the black D before I cleaned it. 2) video showing the half cleaned D string. 3 & 4) Both the A and E strings in this set are slightly wavy, giving more flexibility. I often use Warchal’s amber E with other string brands because it’s virtually whistle proof! 5) The waves even out when the string is installed. #practicingviolin replacement shifts in #violinconcerto in #aminor by #jbaccolay These shifts are challenging because the #stringplayer must change position while playing the same note. The opening of this #concerto is challenging as it contains two such shifts in the first phrase! Here’s how I practice mm 23-4 and 120-1: Three videos: 1) Shift back and forth slowly. In the piece, these shifts are descending; however it is useful to practice the shifts in both directions. Listen carefully to match the pitch before and after the shift. Make sure the motion is smooth and comfortable and the finger lands securely after each shift. The arm (not the finger) accomplishes the “transportation” to the new position. Notice how my arm swings back and forth across my body for the 5th-3rd position shift. For the 3rd-2nd position shift my arm shifts and the fingers just lift and drop appropriately at the shift destination. ~swipe left~ 2) Shift a bit faster in rhythms ending in the lower and upper positions, alternatively. I practice with a “Huckleberry Finn” rhythm - holding each “Finn” longer so I can hear it clearly. I’ve been experimenting with different combinations of #viola and fractional #cello strings to use on my #violoncellodaspalla for tuning at standard modern pitch (A440). Here’s a combination that works well for me: I - E (Pirastro Chorda viola A) II - A (Pirastro Chorda viola D) III - D (Pirastro Chorda viola G) IV - G (Thomastik Infeld Spirocore viola C) V - C (D’Addario Helicore 1/8 cello C) As you can see most of the strings are designed for viola and tuned a perfect 4th below the pitch for which they are designed. This setup provides a smooth transition between strings. You can see how the there is no sudden change of thickness between viola and cello strings as a result of using rather thick Spirocore (IV) and the thin Helicore C (V). When playing I notice no big change in contact point between any two adjacent strings. The steel lower strings offer clarity and response while the upper gut strings are powerful, resonant, and singing. The viola strings are just long enough to seat properly. I use Wittner geared pegs so no large peg motions are needed for tuning. This combination may not be practical for use with standard pegs, especially for the top peg D (III). (FYI Pirastro Oliv and Eudoxa are slightly longer than Chorda and also work well). The peg end wrap on the Spirocore (IV) comes over the fingerboard (swipe left), however I only touch it for A flat. If it becomes a nuisance I’ll carefully remove it. Not only is this a wonderful combination of strings for modern tuning, it’s also comprised of strings which can be obtained easily and at reasonable cost.
