How to eat vegan/vegetarian on a budget in Central America 🥦🥭🥑🍍🍅🍉🥥🥔 Read below for tips: . . As you might now, we eat mainly plantbased and it was really difficult to do in Panama on a budget. The local cuisine, which is super cheap (like 1-2$ for an empanada) is very meat and cheese heavy and most of the sodas and restaurant don't specifically cater to vegans/vegetarians. So we thought we share what our best tips are: . N°1: You can get fruit and veggies at almost every place. There are many so called Legumberias or Fruterias, where we usually both a full bag of fruit and veggies for the day for about 3-5$. . N°2: Book accommodations with a kitchen. For hostels it is very common to have a shared kitchen, and if you prefer booking over Airbnb it is worth it to pay a few extra bugs to get a place with kitchen. . N°3: Pick the right supermarkets. In Panama we prefered the Riba Smith supermarkets, and in Costa Rica the Auto Mercado ones. They are definitely a bit more expensive but they tend to have much more fresh produce and quite a few vegan/vegetarian options. . REMINDER: "Sin carne" (Spanish for "without meat") does not garantee you vegetarian food. "Pollo" (chicken) and "pescado" (fish) is often not counted as meat. .
