The galaxy was a big place. It was full of good people, bad people, and everyone in between. It was also full of countless stories that all took place a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away. These stories were full of adventure and mystery and most importantly, love. Some stories were like the silly fairytales your mother used to tell you before bed. The ones about accidentally bumping into your soulmate and falling in love at first sight. When you met Hunter, it was like all of those stupid love stories suddenly made a lot more sense.

If you had to describe your relationship with Hunter in one word, it would be peace. In a galaxy full of death and suffering and all the horrible things that kept you up at night, you had managed to find peace in Hunter’s embrace. 

At first, he was hesitant. Hesitant to laugh, hesitant to touch, hesitant to love. His brothers always came first and his responsibilities always took priority. But as you grew closer, the bond between you grew stronger. It wasn’t long before he started to view you as an important member of the team, an extension of himself. Some people believed in soulmates. After he met you, he did too.

And lying in bed with you, tucked away from the empire and the never ending responsibilities, he could finally breathe. Just breathe. Because when he was with you, all of his worries faded away like dandelion seeds on the wind.

Time was almost impossible to tell while in hyperspace. After being in it long enough, anyone could loose track of the time. You could barely tell if it was day or night. But that didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was the man lying right next to you, his arms wrapped tightly around your torso and his face buried in the crook of your neck.

You didn’t say anything, you didn’t need to. The silence was what made this moment so peaceful. It was just him and you and the steady beating of your heart. He could hear it loud and clear, echoing in his mind like a mother’s lullaby he never got to hear.

So much had changed in the last year. The war ended, the empire rose to power, they met Omega, lost Crosshair, got attacked by bounty hunters, became hired guns, lived hand to mouth for longer than he liked to admit. But there was one thing stayed the same. Your heartbeat.

“We should probably get up.” You eventually murmured, your voice breaking the peaceful silence. Hunter knew you were right but some part of him deep down despised the thought of getting up and starting the day. 

So he didn’t say anything, instead tightening his grasp around your body. A breathy laugh escaped your lips as you leaned over to press a soft kiss against his forehead, “Fine, five more minutes.”

You began to run your fingers through his dark hair, toying absentmindedly with those silky strands of hair. The reaction you received was so small that anybody else would’ve missed it. His breath hitched ever so slightly and the remaining tension leftover in his shoulders disappeared.

Early mornings spent together like this were rare. Between doing increasingly more dangerous jobs for Cid and staying off the Empire’s radar, you never had time to just relax anymore. At least during the war, you were given time off in between missions. Now surviving was the mission, and that was never ending.

“Hey.. do you ever wonder what might’ve happened if the republic won?“

Hunter stirred slightly, lifting his head up to gaze down at you with those big brown eyes of his. His fingers brushed lightly against your cheek as he spoke in that raspy morning voice of his, the kinda that made your heart flutter and your whole body shiver. 

“The republic did win.” He responded with a tired sigh, still loyal to a republic that was corrupted far before he was even created to fight for it.

You roll your eyes, gently flicking his arm. “You know what I mean. Like, instead of running from the empire, maybe we’d be on a farm like Cut and Suu, tending to some cubby nerfs and selling our goods at some back water market on a tiny planet all to ourselves.”

“It’s best not to think about the ‘what if’s’.” He murmured gruffly, leaning down to press a few feather light kisses against your jaw, trailing down your neck until he reached that sweet spot that always made a shiver run down your spine.

Your eyes flutter shut for a moment as your hands slip down to rest on Hunter’s shoulders. “Oh c’mon.. I know you’ve thought about it. Just- just imagine it.. Settling down together somewhere where the empire can’t find us or omega.” You whisper wistfully as you stare up at the ceiling, imagining a future you knew might never come true.

“Hhm.” Hunter was deep in thought as his fingers brushed lightly against your skin, tracing the many curves of your body. He didn’t want to dismiss your hopes and dreams but he also knew that there were other, more important, things to focus on. “Alright baby, how about this? You can keep dreaming of the future all you want, but you gotta promise me that you won’t forget about the present.”

“Deal.” You reach up to brush your fingers against his face, tracing the dark ink that you could never forget. You pull him down for a kiss, unable to stop smiling as your lips press against his.
