“Because of recent harassment over her role as Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 Remake! Lily Gao has now almost deleted all of her Instagram posts!”
Just another day, another fandom moment, and another collective harassment campaign: this time, targeted at a Chinese actress who dared to interpret a character differently. Funny, how hate against Asian women, especially Chinese women, has become so normalized that it’s been weaponized to bully them off platforms.
Frankly, fandoms continue to be a pile of trash, and I've yet to be proven wrong. The manner in which people attach their identity to these franchises and then go at people collectively to push them to depression, self-harm, and suicide would never cease being fucking evil. I hate the fact that these people aren't held accountable, made to pay reparations, and sent to jail to set their heads straight, made an example out of! They'd walk away scot-free whilst this person battles with extreme depression and medical bills. Something has to change!
And why does a female character even need to portray her “feminine gravitas”, as one “gamer critic” put it, all the time? Why does every powerful woman have to be a sex symbol that's sultry and sexually provocative all the fucking time? Why can’t these female characters act differently from the established cliché once a while? Why’s there a whiplash for the lot of you? And the funny thing is, she's the second best actress Ada’s ever had (the crown goes to RE6 Ada, who still remains the best in the franchise, especially since this character is one walking sexist “yellow-fever” trope). At least, this time around, she sounds like a person with decent motivations unlike her previous iterations that hilariously personify Leon’s sexual frustrations. Lord forbid if an Asian “femme fatale” stereotype is ever challenged. This woman, of course, has got to pay!
And why would the good ol’ youtubers want to be left behind in this race to fuel more controversy, hate, and vitriol to make a buck for their “cause”? So lo and behold, Miss Sphere Hunter, someone’s who’s championed by many neo-liberals for being the “not like the other youtubers”, didn’t want to be left behind in this race to vilify this woman: Link
You gotta love the fact that how giggling in a condescending way to belittle a person (who’s an Asian woman no less, who hardly get any quality work in this industry) and her work is now seen as constructive criticism, apparently. And now, she's doing damage control. I really detest people like her. Don't care how many fans she's got on here. She's not even a critic. (Her remark on The Evil Within not having any plot will forever be the single most absurd thing I've heard from the game's haters.) How many people like her, with large audiences, fuel this "Gamer" mindset? I don't understand why there's no scrutiny in this regard.
And to top it off, she’s doubling down on her abhorrent behavior with insults:
Why do the fanbase of these pathetic “youtube critics”, who wouldn’t know criticism if it defecated in their mouths, feel the need to be their “gamer knights” when this straight-forward clip of her demeaning someone's work speaks for itself? She’s part of the problem; everyone like her is part of the problem. I wish that there were serious consequences for people who engage in this behavior. You know what? I’m angered, yes, but not surprised because most of these "youtube critics" thrive on vitriol as they know that that's what would sell. The hollering chuds and the unhinged fandom aficionados are their bread and butter. They pander to their audience, and that’s why these incidents keep happening; and until people aren’t held accountable, they’d keep happening.
