When I first started getting into FF13--I didn't think I'd like Serah. I didn't think I'd like Snow/Serah, honestly, because I tend not to care about the cute girls who do nothing. And I was surprised by how amazingly written and well-developed this couple is. They're very real, and honest, and simple, at their core. In all the craziness of the game, Serah is one of the only things that's real, one of the only things to believe in. She's a grounding hope, a guiding light--especially for Snow, who loved her enough to give up everything for her. So, in light of FF13-2, I'm finally getting off my lazy ass and writing out why I love these two so much. (And, yes, a little bit on why I can't stand Noel/Serah.)
Snow and Serah are beautiful and wonderful because they truly, honestly, deeply trust and believe in each other. Serah knows he's loyal, and Snow knows she's loyal, that's why he doesn't feel threatened by Noel at all. He knows Serah would never think about betraying him. Such a deep level of trust is rarely found in fiction, and is almost impossible to find in real life. Thus, it's understandable that a lot of people mistake it for--what, a cooling of feelings? I'm not entirely sure what exactly people call it, but regardless, it's ridiculous to claim this as one of the reasons they don't work together. Trust this deep, and this strong, is so hard to come by. It's almost disrespecting it to call it anything else, or to disregard it the way so many people do.
A lot of people say that Serah "deserves better", but--and I'm a giant Noel fangirl--between Noel and Snow, neither of them is a better man. They're both very, very good men, but neither of them is better than the other. I've seen so many people claim that Noel's better and it's ridiculous. Even claiming Snow is a better man is ridiculous. The game designers even recognize that, and have stated so on several occasions, that Snow and Noel are very similar. It's even talked about in the game. There's also that Noel is so angry at Snow--much of the dislike you hold for a person comes from the fact that you see things you hate about yourself in them, regardless of whether or not they are a good person. Noel himself knows they're similar and that's why he gets so angry at Snow for what he does.
Which leads to the next point: what Snow does. He goes on a wild goose chase to find Lightning, all for Serah. Now, you might say, 'well, that's something any good boyfriend should do; try to find their sister, if she's lost', or something ridiculous of that nature. Keep in mind several things. Yes, it's pretty normal for a man to go looking. But is it normal for said man to,
go through time and space to find her?
once again give up his humanity to save not only her, but their other friends?
go looking for her when his memories have been changed to think she's in the crystal pillar?
My point here is that Snow goes to insane lengths for Serah--lengths that Serah herself doesn't even realize he'd go to, sometimes. It all leads back to trust, and their deep love for each other. Snow wants nothing more than for Serah to be happy. Serah is convinced Lightning's not in the pillar, despite what Snow's own memories are telling him. Everyone else thinks Lightning's gone. Snow chooses to believe Serah, because, to him, there's no way Serah could ever be lying.
Yes, it's very true that sometimes Snow goes too far. But Serah can put him back in his place. She has been shown to get angry at him, frustrated, but for the most part, she just gets a bit exasperated, because she knows that's what Snow's like. And when you honestly, genuinely love someone--you don't try and change them. Serah obviously loves Snow for who he is, reckless idiot and all. To that end, she wouldn’t just leave him for some guy who comes into her life saying he knows where her sister is. Noel gives Serah the courage to go begin searching for Lightning herself—he doesn’t sway her heart from Snow. It’s honestly an insult to her love and trust of Snow to say that some stranger could change her mind so quickly, not a statement of how her and Snow’s love isn’t true.
And, finally, there’s the point of Noel himself in all this. Noel does care about Serah. A lot. I won’t deny that. However, Noel would never try and break Serah’s loyalty to someone else. To an extent, a lot of pictures or stories I’ve seen depicting the two of them in romantic situations are almost a slight on their characters. Noel is protective of Serah, much like a brother is protective of a sister. Serah is about the same towards Noel. But, Serah is loyal to Snow. She obviously loves him. Noel is not the kind of man who would destroy a happy couple, destined to be married. As a huge Noel fan, it’s honestly a bit offensive to me that people assume he’d be totally okay with stealing Serah away from Snow. He's not that kind of person. He knows how painful it is to be left behind, to have trust broken, and all those things--so he'd never do that to either of them, even if he "doesn't like" Snow. Noel is, inherently, a kind person. Very kind. He values life above everything else and, as a consequence, can't bring himself to hurt others unless he's acting to protect someone he cares about. The people around him, love, and life, are so important to him. He'd never do anything to come between Snow and Serah unless one of them was hurting the other. But he'd step in between anyone in that kind of scenario.
All in all, I just. Love Serah and Snow so much. They are such a beautiful example of what a relationship should strive to be. And I think it's really, really sad that so many people just can't understand why they're so amazing together, and misinterpret it. I'm not trying to be cruel to anyone--I genuinely think it's sad. Loves like this are so rare, and it says so much about our society nowadays that people could hate a couple that's so happy together.
Ahhh, I'm so bad at being articulate (I know it doesn't look like it, but I am), so I just. Can't find all the words I want to say. But, yeah. I just love Snow/Serah so much and I have so many feelings. Should this be behind a read more? Ack.
