girl i'm only halfway through the episode how am i supposed to focus on the story when the cinematography is making me kick my feet and giggle
Honestly, if you had to ask me what one thing makes Shaft anime so distinct aesthetically, I'd probably say the blocking
There's a lot else at play, but every anime I've seen by the studio is just full of shots of perfectly-posed characters, subtle when they need to be, but just as often quirky or outlandish
The studio is clearly good at hiring people who know how to frame a shot and how to maximise the potential of a character's design
I'm rewatching Supernatural to avoid my thesis and I would love to write a paper on the subtle interactions between Dean and Cas and the body language/facial expressions, like obviously we know the queer baiting has been there the entire time but like seriously it's insane, I'm not a film major so I know practically nothing about shot composition or anything like that but like come on. I'm thinking specifically about a scene in season 11 when Cas is being possessed by Lucifer and Dean just has this look of anguish and longing on his face knowing that Cas is so close but it isn't really him. i want an analysis of that shit.
Benedict and Tessa in the studio, at the Royal Academy of Art. From Season 2 Episode 5 - "An Unthinkable Fate".
As much I don't want to think about Benedict with anyone other than Sophie, I love this scene on so many different levels:
Story & dialogue: The introduction of Tessa is so smooth. The way they meet flows so naturally and is immediately electric. No lengthy exposition or barrage of details thrown in your face. Excellent acting and story telling.
Music: The playful seduction picks up through the music playing in the background - the gentle plucking of string instruments gives it such a fun, bouncy atmosphere.
Lighting: The contrast of hard and soft lights in the room, enhancing the mood. Particularly this shot where the hard light highlights and creates shadows on Benedict's face, creating that emotional connection to the moment, ugh! So good!
How they managed to fit so much goodness into a 2 minute scene is mind-blowing!

So I was looking for a certain gif, for a certain Willex moment, for a different post I was writing - and these two gifs just happened to be next to each other and it smacked in the face how brilliant they are. I love mirroring shots so much - and I cannot believe I missed this one!
They are so simple yet say so much.
With the first shot both Alex and Willie are sat on the backrest of the same bench with nothing dividing them. They are enthused in the conversation and enjoying each other’s company with their bodies turned towards one another. Willie is the key to helping Alex feel secure and in control during this new ghost situation by having the answers to his questions.
Cut to the next shot where the pair are still sat atop of the backrests of the seat - meaning they are still level with one another - but now they are separated by different seats. There’s a crack in the foundation of their bond now Alex realises the dark side of knowing the truth. Willie may not have been actively at fault for what happened - but he still chose not to make Alex aware of how dangerous Caleb was. Whether he’s aware of it or not - Alex is always gonna have that sprig of doubt towards Willie which maybe means he can’t immediately trust him like he previously did. These things stick with us - whether we consciously want them to or not - and it’s evident in this second shot. The previous enthusiasm is now gone as their body’s stay forward facing with no turn towards each other. It’s a little tense and uncomfortable which contrasts completely with the energy being released by the pair in the first shot. Things have changed - and it’s all shown through that shot composition perfectly.
I love these shots so much - along with loads of others - but we’ll see if I can formulate my thoughts into words before I forget them or lose my motivation to write them.
We’ll see what happens...
