Okay so I just started watching the new season 2 of the live action Netflix adaptation and have only seen the first episode so don’t spoil me further y’all but might I just say—

1. Zuko is looking MIGHTY FINE

2. It was SOO FRIGGIN INTERESTING to see how they played the Azula getting the assignment to track down Zuko like omg this version clearly cares about her brother?? I am shooketh? Not sadistically smirking at bringing her bro home in chains? Ozai being nah we’re bringing him home and Azula being all yeah sure “rEeTriEvE hIm” like I love the thought that she cared thinking he died?

3. Also, Crimson RED LOTUS MENTION I’M screaming????? They’re bringing that to us all the way from the L of K?????

4. Relatedly shooketh like the implications of the obvious forming of factions/infighting/prospect of civil war going on with that whole deal omg? (Azula did do a great job with her lil presentation ngl although it was getting awfully cloyingly claustrophobic with all the sycophantic action going on on both her and weirdly her dad’s side but I mean he did undercut it at the end there ig but still, it was weird seeing Ozai being so openly and enthusiastically complimentary like that)

5. Also now canon about the ocean spirit having taken over Aang’s body basically/using him to channel its destructive energy/revenge vendetta through him which like was iirc somewhat more vague in the original show (part of me did like thinking through what it meant for it to it to have actually been Aang tho just in the avatar state, like i find that kind of more interesting especially given his later insistence he’s never hurt people like bruh—and apparently they weren’t shy about showing that here either like SUCH SAME VIBES to show him nailing a whole flank of soldiers with ice daggers across all sorts of body parts only to hurt a serpent ‘accidentally’ cough I mean be upset he thought he killed it when he was only trying to maim or seriously injure (ok yes ik he was more just trying to distract and defend and whatnot but STILL. It’s the juxtaposition of it all, boys, that gets me—also tho it was one hundred million percent in character for Aang to immediately jump to telling Katara to use their VERY PRECIOUS SPIRIT WATER WHICH IS QUITE LIMITED IN SUPPLY on a wounded animal lmao my sweet summer child

6. At least Aang finally learned healing on screen, though I feel like he should have struggled more with it rather than it be going from no I don’t wanna try to just getting it on the first try on a massive sea serpent like ok bro with no chill and no learning curve whatsoever asksks but also it IS technically canon he’s a prodigy when it comes to learning waterbending (and obviously airbending)

7. Suki was also looking p fine ngl, sincerely hoping Sokka at least mentions Yue this time tho cause it gonna be awkward still if no…like if he doesn’t HAVE to but since it’s kinda clearly the reason he was reluctant to start things with Suki it seems like it should be addressed

8. Also, I can get more behind Kataang in this version now that they actually look a similar age due to Aang’s actor aging up in the time it took to make this lol cause I just Could Not get over in the OG show how he’s just SUCH a child the whole way through (like obviously he does grow and mature and whatnot but he’s still a mostly pre-pubescent child and the makeout session with Katara at the end was just so weird and unnecessary imo like she was always more of a mother or older sister figure to him so it was always like yuck blegh anywho but the dynamics in this seem different so I can be like ok I can see it more now)

9. ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT GOLDEN BIT OF ZUKO ANGST LIKE MA BOI—I mean the yam thing was HILARIOUS I died tho dang bro the last convo was such an interesting take with him blaming Iroh for literally everything bad to happen to him ever lmao (tho also sadly and heart wrenchingly kinda in character at this point)

10. Also it is SO WEIRD like kinda creepy ngl that Zuko held onto his chopped off phoenix tail…like boi…something something about needing to let go but also I GET it cause they were showing with literally every scene how much he Was Not Letting Go Nor Moving On. Delighted he has a ways yet to go character development wise because SON I WILL WATCH THIS REDEMPTION ARC IN ALL ITS FORMS AND SHANT TIRE OF IT (ofc you can’t top the actual OG show but BOY is it fun to see a live action adaption a least a LITTLE more faithful than the movie that shall not be named—except some of their changes do irk me, including…

11. Bro. WTF is this about making the Painted Lady an EARTH KINGDOM SPIRIT?! Excuse me?! And are they gonna just totally co-opt the whole polluted fishing village thing, too, to make it a boring one note oh Fire Nation so evil thing?! ExCUSe you?!!! Where is my nuanced allegory to the sentiment expressed in things like that quote about the first country the Nazis invaded was their own? (This very well may have been a Captain America quote ngl but THE POINT STANDS) Anyway I am irrationally angry about this point like wtf

12. I see you there, seeding bloodbending early in the healing scenes 👀 I see you

13. Very in character for Azula to try to make Mai and Ty Lee fight to the death just on her say so, just because lol

14. What was up with the everyone-getting-together scene? Just to amp up the Aangst when he got cold feet? Also why are we spending time seeing Sai get together with that OC lady?

15. Side note those two scared kids on Serpent’s Pass were SO CUTE. RIP the character assassination of my boi Aang acting a lil Zuko like at first like wHY iS eVeRyBoDy MOvInG sO sLoW, hUH? But I mean they did try to walk it back like oh no look he doth have compassion but man ngl acting a lil shaky on that tho

16. Zuko on the other hand. OML such a perfect emo drama queen asksksksksk it suits him so well have I mentioned how fine he was looking

17. Speaking of fineness, Katara in her hair loopies looking great, also holy COW they def amped up the waterbending in this one like dang waterbending looks so useful (we knew this already, ofc, but they def showed that)

18. Iroh my boi, he really be putting up with it and tryna impart that wisdom to his emo child not-your-son which like, again, we knew, but man Zuko (was glad he didn’t go as hardcore below the belt as I was half dreading him to go I.e. something about rubbing his son’s death in his face instead of just implying Lu Ten wouldn’t be happy with the man Iroh’s become cause to me after he asked that ‘and what would he think of you now’ schtick I was half expecting Iroh to say to himself after Zuko left something like ‘I hope he would come to understand the choices I’ve made, and be proud of the man I’ve become’ sort of deal or something like him growing/maturing/recognizing the honor in his present state and the folly in his former conquests, with a clear implication that that’s what he wishes of Zuko, too. But hey I wasn’t called into the writers’ room for that, so what can ya do 🤷‍♂️

19. Also wait so we’re just gonna skip over how they found out about Sozin’s Comet originally? I was almost more mad we wouldn’t get the spirit library before I remembered that’s where they found out about the Day of Black Sun, not the comet, and eh I’m okay without the Roku temple reveal thing and still not as irksome as the Painted Lady thing for real cause this at least made sense and they did a fine job explaining it away and it being not a common knowledge thing but bc Sai was working for the Fire Nation (speaking of which, there is NO WAY there isn’t like a hit out on that guy, he totally knows WAY too much for the Fire Nation to be any sort of okay with him out in the wild ready to wreck their shiz up)

20. Can I say how much I want to see Zuko interact with Jet like their teaming up on the ferry thing in canon?? (Yes I’m calling the original show canon, as far as I’m concerned that is the only canon and EVERYTHING else is just high production fanfic) Anyway there were points in this I was just like Jet you would LOVE this angsty kid utterly dissatisfied with the wages and general state of living facing the war refugees (course he’s mostly like that cause he’s pissy about being a prince and this being beneath him but STILL. The foundation of that short lived relationship was built on misunderstandings/misinterpretations and I LIVED for that, however briefly we had it.

21. FURTHERMORE lol when Iroh brought up the tea shop sitch I was like ooh Zuko’s coffee shop au phase is getting a jump start in this version lol but then ofc that didn’t happen but I’m kinda hoping he’ll go on some journey of self discovery and come back around to that tea shop to get that crucial customer service experience in before it all falls apart in Ba Sing Se again

22. Also can we talk about how I am SO INTERESTED to see how they’ll play that out?? I’m so invested??? I legit just see it as someone’s canon re-write fanfic brought to life lol and am just like OOH I WONDER WHAT’LL CHANGE OR STAY THE SAME like sometimes they do good and capture the essence or vibe of the character perfectly even tho it’s not the same situation (see: yam situation lmao or some of Sokka’s lines) and OTHER times it destroys everything I liked in the original asksksk (see: Painted Lady nuances). Anywho still fun to see.

23. OMG WAIT HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT THE INTRO??? THE INTRO!!! THEY DID THE THING!!! Zhu Li, they did the thing!!! I will say tho I am FASCINATED by how they changed the “but I believe Aang can save the world” to “but we believe” like idk why it just really intrigued me (also their sooo heavy handed look they’re giving ppl hope by that opening sequence lol like that dude’s acting was not that great, or maybe the lady’s wasn’t, or maybe just neither of them but anyway I appreciate them showing Aang giving ppl hope)—also apologies if they were already doing this in the first season, they probably were, but it’s been so long since I watched it and my memory is not great asksksk
