#Repost @ollie_putnam (@get_repost) ・・・ Long day of filming today, started with two dives at Aliwal Shoal seeing oceanic blacktips, raggies and big stingrays, then the afternoon filming and location scouting on land at Scotbrough Beach where shark nets are deployed to "protect people from sharks". The contrast between the perception and the reality of sharks being in the area here is hard to understand. Maybe if we could take all the people that fear sharks (and are convinced the nets protect them) diving with the sharks just a few miles offshore and show them their fear is not justified, maybe less of them would be convinced the shark nets are necessary... 🤔 Maybe we will just have to make the best film we can showing the reality of the situation and hope that changes enough people's minds to make a difference and lower the public support for the nets, which is the driving force behind their continued use... Due to bad weather at Aliwal Shoal this morning, @sharkservation and @white_shark_africa decided to visit the KZN Sharks Board in Durban to see if the horror stories we have heard about them are true... And they didn't disappoint. We started by watching a contradictory video which first spoke of conservation and what spectacular animals sharks are, then moved on to explain why we need to kill them so that the beaches are safe for bathers (?) and how they do this through the use of drum lines and nets. We then joined a group consisting mostly of families with young children to watch a "scientist' dissect a Tiger shark caught recently. What was supposed to be educational turned into entertainment with jokes about the sharks and ended with all the kids coming up to the dissection table to poke through the innards of the shark and have their pictures taken with it... When we asked questions about why they have these policies and how that particular shark was caught we were answered with propaganda and lies, even so far as being told this shark wasn't caught on a drum line despite having a large baited hook in its stomach and it saying on the clipboard on the table that it had been. Sickening, saddening and infuriating that the KZN Sharks Board basically have a licence to do what they want, kill as many sharks as they want all in the name of keeping bathers safe, fuelled by their propaganda and scaremongering regarding safety in the ocean. Maybe it's all just to keep them in employment... Sure I will post much more about this with worse pictures and am also hoping we get to see a live Tiger shark on our dives tomorrow.
