Malapascua, an island depending on shark tourism from Steve De Neef on Vimeo.

When Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) passed the Philippines on November 8, 2013 it caused immense destruction al along the Visayan region. Now, almost a year later many islands are still recovering, some are doing great while others are struggling to get back on their feet. One island that got some help from an unexpected corner is Malapascua, near Cebu City. The island is famous because of nearby Monad Shoal, a submerged seamount that acts as a cleaning station for thresher sharks. These sharks bring in many curious divers hoping to catch a glimpse of what is perhaps the world's most elegant shark. Shark tourism has played a big role in the island's recovery and has brought in support from divers worldwide. Unfortunately the same shark that brings in tourist money is still hunted significantly in the Philippines. This project was made possible with the help of the shark foundation (shark.ch)

The Shark Hunters from Madison Stewart on Vimeo.

In 2016 I spent time with 'Mark the Shark' and 'Vic Hislop', two infamous shark hunters. I managed to sit down with and interview both, and join Mark for a day on his boat. This is the film I created about my interactions with the two men. Shark hunters represent an archaic approach to fear, but shaming them in an Instagram post is not going to change them. If we want to help sharks, we need to approach things and people without hatred through knowing your enemies you win half the battle.
