Why is it called aĀ semicolon?
Because apparently, people only use it correctly half the time. The other half? Itās busy moonlighting as a winky face. ;-)
But hereās the thing: the semicolon doesnāt have to be scary.
Think of it as the punctuation that says, āHey, these two ideas are closely related, but theyāre independent enough to stand on their own.ā Itās the middle child of punctuationāoften overlooked, occasionally misused, but super useful when you understand it.
So the next time youāre debating whether to slap a period or a comma between two thoughts, consider the semicolon.
š Writers, students, grammar nerds: letās give the semicolon the love (and proper usage) it deserves.
