its so annoying that em dashes are now associated with ai noooooo i just love to use them in writing :((
My Hero — The Em Dash
Today at work I was told that I can't use the em dash anymore in my emails or any client/executive facing communications because, and I quote, "it makes it look like you've obviously used AI, and your writing already sounds robotic enough because it's so nice and put together." Sooo.... because I have half a fucking brain, and know how to string two sentences together, I can't use my most favorite and most common punctuation mark? (meanwhile, in the next breath, I'm being told to run my every email, sentence, whatever through AI to see what it comes out with)? WTF
i love the em dash — <3
GENUINELY
what does the em dash do?

I fucking love an em dash.
This is an official announcement that I have been converted. I am reborn.
For parenthetical asides, Robert Bringhurst says the em dash:
"belongs to the padded and corseted aesthetic of Victorian typography"
a description so apt and evocative that my allegiance has switched. Long live the spaced en dash! Hurrah spaced en dash!
MS Word says it will auto-generate an em-dash if you put in 2 hyphens, but it actually gives you an en-dash, and now I have to repeatedly be the bearer of that bad news in this monstrously-large report.
