The Rookie trailer for the 2nd midseason (I guess)
Even with a better trailer, Smurfs (2025) still doesnât win me over
The second trailer for Smurfs (2025) is definitely a step up from the first. The animation is more polished, the pacing is better, and the trailer gives a clearer sense of the story. But despite those improvements, I still donât like the direction this movie is takingâand as a longtime Smurfs fan, thatâs disappointing to admit.
Let me be clear: I love the Smurfs. I grew up with the comics, the animated series, and everything that made the little blue characters so timeless. But this movie feels like itâs trying too hard to be trendy rather than staying true to the heart of the franchise. Instead of embracing the whimsy, simplicity, and charm that defined the original Peyo comics and the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Smurfs (2025) leans into loud, flashy storytelling with awkward attempts at humor.
Take Papa Smurf, for example. When he delivers the line, âNow, thatâs what I call a banger,â itâs not just cringeworthyâitâs wildly out of character. Papaâs always been a wise and grounded leader, not someone chasing modern slang for a cheap laugh. Moments like this signal that the writers are more interested in appealing to TikTok culture than respecting the source material.
The animation itself is visually energetic, but the blend of cartoony Smurfs with real-world Parisian environments just doesnât work for me. It creates a tonal clash that makes the film feel disjointed and out of sync with its own identity. The addition of new characters like the âParis Division of the International Neighborhood Watch Smurfsâ feels gimmicky, not meaningful.
Even Rihannaâs dual role as producer and the voice of Smurfette, plus her new song of âFriend of Mineâ, canât salvage the trailerâs lack of charm. It all feels like surface-level flair with little of the sincerity that made earlier Smurfs media so enduring.
In fact, Iâve made my decision: I refuse to watch the movie or buy any merchandise tied to it. The only Smurfs products Iâll support are the repackaged editions of the classic comicsâwhether in English from Papercutz or in their original French versions. Thatâs where the true spirit of the Smurfs lives on.
Bottom line? The second trailer might be an improvement, but it still reinforces my belief that this reboot is a misguided reinvention of something that didnât need fixing. Itâs a shame, because the Smurfs deserve better.
