A Tennessee woman says her scheduled sterilization procedure was canceled after a hospital’s ethics committee claimed they had a “duty to protect her sacred fertility.”
Foster told local reporters that birth control has never worked for her, that she’s never wanted kids, and that “I’ve wanted to pursue sterilization since I learned that that was something that a person could do.”
Tennessee recently passed the Medical Ethics Defense Act—which allows doctors and hospitals to deny care based on their personal religious or moral beliefs.
