Trascoro of Cusco Cathedral, with the retablo of Our Lady of La Antigua (Juan Tomás Tuyru Túpac, 1694).
One of the main features of late gothic and early rennaissance spanish cathedrals is the presence of an enclosed coro or choir in the middle of the central nave of the church. The choir is an autonomous space, with three sides closed by walls while the fourth is closed by a fence facing the capilla mayor or main altar. This particular disposition blocks the view of the high altar from the main door of the church, while providing a different approach by creating a unique feature to spanish cathedrals: the trascoro. The outer walls that close the choir are usually adorned with small retablos, but the back wall, which faces the main entrance, is usually given a special treatment. In Cusco Cathedral the trascoro is adorned with a beautiful baroque retablo, built by indian artist Juan Tomás Tuyru Túpac in 1694 and gilded by Gaspar de Morales in 1714. It is a one story high composition with four huge salomonic columns dividing it into vertical sections. In the middle section is placed the image of Our Lady of la Antigua, a canvas painting placed inside a sagrario with rolling doors.
