I offer this retablo to the Virgin of Guadalupe for returning my Pedro to me. He had dumped me for a woman, but I asked you so much for this miracle, and now we are together and very happy. Pedro & Julian, February 14, 1976

My kitchen was filled with cockroaches. My cat was very lazy to catch them. I didn’t know how to get rid of them. Saint Paschal gave me an idea to bring all my farm animals to the kitchen—the pigs, the ducks, the chicken. They ate all the cockroaches saving my kitchen, although they dirtied it up a little.

A folk Mexican retablo (or ex-voto) commemorating a miracle performed by the Virgin of Zapopan (c.1950s) The text says: The rats had invaded our house and were running about everywhere. Our cat did not seem very interested in hunting them, so we prayed to the Virgin of Zapopan to help us, and she miraculously made all the rats disappear from one day to the next. in Mexico (and parts of Latin America) retablos means not only large church altarpieces but also small devotional paintings made in thanks for divine help after an illness, accident, or other danger. They are commonly painted on tin plates and hang in homes.
