Now, if there was one thing everyone knew, it was that you were the girl Rusty-James had been lusting over for yeaaaaaars on end, but if there was one thing even more abundant, it was that you didn't like Rusty-James, and even better, you were one of the most popular girls in town, even just in your all girls school you ruled

And claiming Rusty-James wasn't your type was great considering you did have a type you went after, and it was needless to say most people were shocked when they discovered the boy you chose to chase after and make your claim on was Steve Hayes, hell it even shocked him in the end!

And now that you'd gotten with Steve, Rusty-James liked to make it clear to anyone and everyone in the world that you two were together, no other bonehead in town could chase tail with you, even when you hung around in the same joint as Rusty-James and Steve did, people could just tell Rusty-James would be the one to get them if they tried a thing

"Ay! Where's the queen?" Midget called with a grin as Steve and Rusty-James entered, Steve raised and eyebrow and cocked his head to the side a little "The who?" He asks, Rusty-James just laughs a little at how clueless Steve was to your new nickname

"Not the who, the queen" Midget says swaying his head a little to mock Steve a little bit with a grin, Rusty-James shrugged "We started calling your girl the queen 'cuz she's so popular and all" He said with a smile and a nod, Steve just furrowed his brows a little, scrunching his face up completely

"Who am I then? Her obedient servant?" Steve asks with a little self deprecating eye roll, Rusty-James just nods "Sure pretty much, and I'm like the king cuz she wants me so bad" He nudges Steve who just mutters a "That's not even funny" When Midget bursts out laughing

The bell rings on the door as you enter with a groan, Rusty-James nods "I see schools out" Steve looks over watching you as you walk in, you sidle up to his side "Hiya" You say simply as you cuddle a little to Steves side, slinging your bag right onto Midgets lap who just grins and moves your bag to the side

You're still in your school uniform which you're known for not liking to Steve and Rusty-James, who've both heard plenty complaints about the teachers and nuns telling you off for different uniform violations, obviously since you seemed to make it your lifes mission to violate all dresscodes given, maybe that's why people found you so cool

"So what's up queenie?" Rusty-James asks lightly as you scrunch your own nose "Who the hell is queenie?" and Steve shakes his head with an eye roll "That's what I asked too" He huffs a little and you just nudge him amused

Rusty-James just shrugs "You, duh, cuz you're queen card 'round here aren't ya?" He says with a little shrug "And I'm king of the castle and Steve's the dirty rascal" He raises his eyebrows with a hum, and you shake your head, not bothering to feed the stupidity and teasing towards Steve, you know only Rusty-James can tease Steve scott free so you don't comment when he does

"Why did you choose Steve?" BJ finally speaks as he peers into his drink, you slide into a seat, Steve sliding in beside you "What is it, shit on Steve day?" He mutters and looks down at the table you just smile and shrug "Cuz he's more genuine than anyone else in this stupid town- plus, he's more handsome-" You continue amused

If you asked Rusty James how it’d started, he wouldn’t be able to give you an answer. He does remember being at Benny’s, surrounded by a group of boys he used to call his gang but now can barely remember the faces of. He remembers talk of Motorcycle Boy, and yelling at all of them to shut up! Shut the fuck up! He ain’t left for good! Rusty James doesn’t know if he believed his words at the time, but he certainly don’t now. It’s been almost two months since Motorcycle Boy left, and he ain’t coming back. Maybe it was that realization that pushed him over the edge.

Whatever it was, it’s led him here. At a party surrounded by girls, disgusting alcohol, coke, and needles. His arm is pockmarked with small bruises and scabs from where he’s shot up before. He doesn’t remember how long it’s been since he got to the party, or since he last shot up, but it can’t have been that long, considering he can still feel the slight sting in his arm from the needle. Some girl is yapping on and on next to him, with her hand on his chest, and he has the vague feeling that he’s nodding along, but he’s more focused on the weed between his lips than he is on her. He doesn’t remember what happened between him and Patty, but he feels a pang of regret and guilt when he thinks about it, so he decided to take a hit instead of lingering. 

That works pretty well for a while. Well enough that Rusty James doesn’t notice when everyone falls silent until he’s grabbed by the collar. He looks up and-

“Motorcycle Boy?” His words come out a little slurred, but Rusty James’ head feels much clearer than it has been for a while. The sight of his older brother sends a wave of confusing feelings through him, but before he can even think about what to do next, Motor is dragging him out by his collar, shouting and sounding more emotional than Rusty James has ever heard him.

“You fucking idiot Rusty James-!”

“What the fuck is wrong with you!?”

“Are you fucking-”

His brother’s words go in one and out through the other, but Rusty James attempts to listen anyways. “Y’sound angry…” He mumbles, but Motorcycle Boy doesn’t hear him over his shouting. Once the cold night air hits Rusty James’ skin, he flinches back and whines grumbles.

“Motorcycle Boy, it’s cold! I dunno what’s got you all worked up but can we just go back inside and-” Rusty James is cut-off by Motorcycle Boy turning around and putting both hands on his arm. A loud crack rings through the air, and Rusty-James knows immediately that his arm is broken as he stumbles back and clutches his now-broken arm to his chest, tears welling up in his eyes.

“Oh what the fuck!? Motor what the hell!?” 

Hunched in on himself, Rusty James looks up at Motorcycle Boy through tears, only to find him looking at Rusty James with that blank expression that’s much more typical of him.

Ponyboy Curtis, although he now has many regrets about this sentiment, had never been a Gods fearing man. His family, and by extension him, had treated the Gods with the utmost respect, followed their ancient rules, and had been - what he previously considered to be - appropriately fearful of them. Once his parents had passed, he and his brothers continued their worship as any good men would, but Ponyboy himself had never truly feared the Gods. Had never cowered in the face of old tales, nor worried of their wrath, for why should he have? He, along with his family, were diligent in their worship. No God nor Goddess unfavored, no deity forgotten, all the appropriate sacrifices made in all the appropriate times. Ponyboy had never once thought that misfortune would fall upon his family, and especially not on a day such as this. And still he finds himself weeping by his lovely Johnny’s side, body cold and stiff in death, yet no less beautiful. 

His brave darling, drawn down to the Underworld due to a snake bite and The Morai’s  on the day of their wedding. In a rare occurrence, Ponyboy’s lyre lay forgotten next to him, for the one thing he loved more than music was his darling Johnny. Around him, the world cries, creating a cruel melody; for his very voice - as distraught as it is - compels them to share in his misery. The Naiads fill their rivers with tears, and all the branches of all the trees shake, and the birds drop from the sky to cry, and every breeze sings a mournful tune. And although Atlas holds the sky steadfast, the Heavens seem to tremble for just a moment, and as they do, it feels as though the universe itself has been compelled to weep. 

Then- Silence. The Naiads sink into their rivers, the branches still, the birds go still as if seen by Medusa, and the breeze goes quiet. The world holds its breath, as if in the presence of something bigger than itself. And it is. For when Ponyboy looks up from his lover's glassy eyes, a being that cannot possibly be described stands before him. Gorgeous, golden, and heavenly, it whispers in his ears without speaking, and ruffles his hair without moving. As quickly as it had come, it vanishes, leaving behind no trace of its existence. But Ponyboy knows better. Gifts - true gifts with no strings - from the Gods are rare, and to ignore one, to write it off as imagined, would be unwise. Reluctantly, Ponyboy stands and calls the Naiads to his side, for they were with Johnny when he died, and Ponyboy knows he can trust them. Given instructions to start with the burial preparations and one obol to put under Johnny’s tongue, the Naiads take his beloved’s body. 

Ponyboy himself, though, goes another way. Picking up his lyre, he walks in the direction gifted to him by the Gods, singing a melancholy song that brings all who hear it to their knees.
