A hood in the Shepard gang with the wildest stories of surviving getting stabbed, shot at, and hit with a Socâs corvette, gets the flu and dies on his couch. His gang is so angry and restless because they canât beat up an illness or the doctors he didnât even see. Angela is the one who finds him when sheâs dispatched to bring him some soup, because thatâs what greaser girls are for - to patch up their boys, to play fucking nursemaid, to be the even more unnoticed witnesses to the unnoticed deaths; the deaths not action packed enough for boys to stomach.

Even though I love him and sometimes I'd like to imagine he's always nice, I really do appreciate it when authors show Sodapop being just the tiniest bit of a douchebag. He's still Soda, but without Ponyboy's idolized perspective, he's realistically gonna suck sometimes. He's a sixteen year old boy in Tulsa in 1967. I think that's necessary characterization for all of them but I point out Soda because his kindness is often flattening to his character and people forget to make him flawed. Write whatever you want of course but I just think it's more interesting that way.
