Picture 1 60 years ago today on Sept. 4, 1957 the Little Rock Nine students were barred from attending school when governor Orval Faubus ordered the National Guard to prevent them from entering the high school. Pictured here is student Elizabeth Eckford walking away from the school after being turned away. This image ran in the Sept. 16, 1957 issue of LIFE with the following caption: âJeers from a girl, Hazel Bryant (right), follow Elizabeth Eckford as she walks from Little Rockâs Central High. Guardsmen barred her from school.â Although the Little Rock Nine were finally able to attend classes by late September 1957, the fight wasnât over: throughout the rest of the school year, they faced ongoing abuse, threats, discrimination and acts of hazing from their white peers and, disgracefully, from equally vicious adults.
