more of this funny little guy
Professor Quirrell After the initial D.A.D.A teachers illustration, drawing Quirrell was suddenly very easy :) He's a fun character to draw, with his stumbling, nervous characteristics. And of course, the turban is an amazing recognisable feature in his outfits. I played around a bit with the types of cloaks he wears. I wanted them to be big enough that he could hide away in them if he wanted to. I imagined him walking around, hiding his fidgeting fingers in the big sleeves of his robes. And then to realise that in the end, he wasn't nervous or bumbling at all, but a disturbed and dangerous wizard :) Still an iconic plot twist! PS: A shoutout to this wonderful moment in Starkid's A Very Potter Musical:
I watched that musical religiously when I was in high school. And it's still ICONIC!

OK yes my interpretation is that Snape doesn't actually covet the DADA job, it's just a good way for Dumbledore to feign distrust in Snape and Snape to justify his disloyalty, and actually Snape is aware of the curse. But I also headcanon that the reason the students think Snape wants the job is because every year at the start of term Snape looks surly and keeps shooting Dumbledore angry looks when in fact he's just doing that because every person Dumbledore appoints to the position is the literal worst.
hmmm Severus/Quirrell casual hookup during Quirrell’s first year teaching DADA, it’s nothing serious and they’re both frankly more interested in going back to Quirrell’s office to look at an interesting cursed object than they are in hooking up next to the interesting cursed object but they’re both in their 20s and lowkey starved for attention from someone who doesn’t think it’s weird to pause mid-makeout to wonder where dementors put the souls they devour. Quirrell goes off on his research trip and they part on as good terms as they’re capable of! The 91/92 school year is going to be clusterfuck but at least having Quirrell back in the DADA job means one less thing to worry about — except it doesn’t, because Quirrell’s come back terrified and stammering and off and there’s sudden orders from Dumbledore to keep an eye on him… (Sorry Sev, the narrative forbids you from having nice things.)
Yesss you get it anon but also the thing is, Quirrell was the Muggle Studies teacher before being appointed to DADA so they couldn't have been nerding about dementors and inferis together (even tho I love the idea)? Or maybe we hc Quirrell as being a Dark Arts nerd too? Also was Quirrell less of a coward before Voldy attached itself to him?
Just imagine them having an awkward conversation in a hallway at the beginning of 91/92 and Snape being like... he feels different but also familiar? In a cold and threatening way? What the fuck??
But the two kinda starved professors having a few weird and awkward encounters at night in the castle is sending me. I'm sure it could be written in a cute way. But it has to be clumsy af. Like they don't really fit together, y'know? But they make do.
Also I just noticed Quirrell's initials are QQ and it fits him because crying emoji lolz.
Competent Quirrell Is Canon
In celebration of Quirrell's birthday today, 26th September, I bring you a canon fact. Quirrell robbed Gringotts alone. The feat that "only a truly dark wizard" could ever accomplish was his. The task most wizards wouldn't even attempt, he completed. 1) Quirrell introduces himself to Harry at the Leaky Cauldron in Philosopher's Stone. He wears no turban and freely shakes Harry's hand; therefore, no Voldemort is attached to him. (Chapter 5, Diagon Alley)
2) After meeting them at the Leaky Cauldron, Quirrell goes to Gringotts, infiltrates, finds the vault empty, and impressively escapes too. (Chapter 17, The Man With Two Faces)
3) Hagrid and Harry have already visited Gringotts and removed the Stone from the vault. (Chapter 6, The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-Quarters; Chapter 8, The Potions Master) Note: Quirrell is neither detected nor suspected of the robbery. (Chapter 6, The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-Quarters; Chapter 8, The Potions Master) 4) We can further infer that Voldemort wasn't attached to him at that time because of Quirrell's end reveal, in which Quirrell tells Harry: "When I failed to seal the Stone from Gringotts, he was most displeased. He punished me...decided he would have to keep a closer watch on me...." (Chapter 17, The Man With Two Faces) So, not only was Voldemort unattached at the time, but apparently, he wasn't even watching Quirrell very closely.
While Quirrell did fail to obtain the Stone itself due to bad timing, he succeeded in what's considered a monumental task in the Wizarding World. Compare his infiltration to that of the Golden Trio, Griphook, and a damned dragon.
